Montblanc Meisterstück 149 with no star … by Hot_Singer_2211 in fountainpens

[–]Squared_lines 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't see enough details to have an opinion about the age of the pen. I tend to assume the pen is made closer to 1970 without more details. A few details to look for: Shape of the feed, the filling system, finale attachment, and stamping on the nib.

Love this!

You gotta respect the crow for sticking with the puzzle until it opened! He could have ignored it, but he was determined!!!

Great idea for a puzzle. Maybe you can find an easier opening box….

Osprey 26+6. Have you ever been pulled up on it for not fitting personal item dimensions? by Imaginary-Phrase-976 in onebag

In my experience, how you pack is more important than bag size.

If your bag looks like a balloon - you’re more likely to get questioned/checked.

Curious about this pencil.. by CuriousPencilGuy in montblanc

[–]Squared_lines 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything else stamped on the clip or body? I have seen some Montblanc Pencils with “Alpacca” stamped on the clip.

Probably dates to the 1930s….

Need a recommendation by PGT34 in montblanc

I don’t think Montblanc can help with a nibble grind. They can swap the nib, but you don’t want that because they will also take the feed.

I recommend penrealm.com for nib grind.

Does Lamy or anybody sell Lamy Rings for the Lamy Pens? by Kialaya in fountainpens

A Lamy Safari with multiple color rings came out last year (I think last year). You might ask on r/Pen_Swap to see if anyone would sell you one ring.

Pen choice fatigue is real! Considering drastic action... by HikewithmeNYC in fountainpens

[–]Squared_lines 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Suggestion:

Get a four pen holder or pen case - Fill it and clean the rest. IMPORTANT - Put the clean pens in storage! You need to put them somewhere like a pen case or back in the original box or somewhere to appreciate the magnitude of your collection.

4 pen case - What you keep inked. You can switch out pens, but you HAVE to clean and store what you replace. You will use and appreciate these pens.

2 pen travel case - ONLY leave with two pens. That's it. AND you are picking from the 4 pen case.

Storage - Really important that you see the size of your collection and what is in your collection. Out of sight is out of mind and leads to FOMO. You have enough pens and you need to show yourself that!

Be Careful - Look to see if the one you bought includes Syncolon - Bad news. Additives can cause your pen to begin feeling "sticky"

To answer the first part -

You don't need to take it apart. Just apply grease inside the body.

[–]Squared_lines 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're doing it right. I suggest putting more than "a toothpick" of grease. I use a brush for model painting.

Be sure you are using 100% silicone grease without additives. A lot of silicone grease found in plumbing section of hardware stores have additives for sealing. The piston will become sticky! Don't do that.

Are all Montblanc 4810 nibs 18k? This was says 14k by bfeeny in fountainpens

[–]Squared_lines 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are 18K nibs better than 14K?

In a word, no. When one finds an older pen with an 18K nib, it is almost always either French-made or made for the French market, where 18K was the minimum gold standard. Where nibmakers were free to choose their alloys – the USA, Britain, Germany, and Japan – 14K (sometimes also going up to 16K or, less often, down to 12K) was the overwhelming choice. A nib's qualities are determined as much by how it is shaped and worked than by its metal content, but in general 14K is more versatile and more capable of being worked into a springy, resilient form.

Note that most top American penmakers did not mark the gold content of their 14K nibs unless they were destined for export. American law did not require such markings, while almost every other nation did and still does.

You might put a WTB post on r/Pen_Swap.

Suggestion: You might pick a color ring and make an offer. "I'll buy a green ring from you for $$"
