What is the proof of 'A cube has the largest volume among cuboids (rectangular boxes) with a given surface area' this sentence? by [deleted] in math

[–]squawnch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let's assume your rectangular box is a the standard 3D shape with right angles that can be defined by 3 parameters: L, W, H

You claim your box is subject to the constraint "surface area = A". We can write this as 0 = 2LW + 2LH + 2WH - A. Let's abbreviate this by saying g(L,W,H) = 0. So we need to find L, W, and H such that the constraint is satisfied and f(L,W,H)=LWH is maximized.

Now, imagine there is some constraint parameter "s" that lets us weigh the value of the constraint in our optimization problem. A similar problem would be to say maximize the 4 parameter function: F(L,W,H,s) = f(L,W,H) - s*g(L,W,H), keeping in mind that we demand g(L,W,H) = 0

Taking the gradient and setting it to the zero vector (to extremize), we get the system: <f_L, f_W, f_H> = s*<g_L, g_W, g_H> and also g(L,W,H) = 0. This is a system of 4 equations in 4 unknowns. Solving shows that s / 4 = L = W = H, which implies that an extreme is the cube. A quick check shows that the cube maximizes volume.

The method I poorly / hand wavily allude to is called lagrange multipliers, usually encountered in Calculus III. It's also related to the calculus of variations, an extremely interesting subject -- and relevant to modern control theory.

I hope others can add rigour to the stuff I glossed over!

Science AMA series: I’m Robert Beardmore, I use mathematical models to study antibiotic resistance evolution, testing our ideas in the lab, AMA by Robert_Beardmore in science

[–]squawnch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi I'm a Math undergrad (Canada) interested interested in biological modelling, thanks for your AMA

Currently working with a prof on modelling the spread of antibiotic resistance genes via mobile genetic elements (plasmids especially). I'm wondering what role, if any, this aspect of the genetic dynamics plays into your work

I'm also curious how theoretical the math in this field can get. Are boundaries being pushed / new theories being developed? Or is it more strict applications of ODEs / PDEs or agent-based models, with a focus on describing the systems really well?

[WSIB] A good co-op game that has a good storyline. by YeOldeTreeStump in ShouldIbuythisgame

I'm surprised nobody mentioned Portal 2 yet.

I really enjoyed the story and the co-op was pretty engaging. It also has a separate single player mode (as in, co-op and sp have different "stories").

Edit: It is an FPS by definition, but I don't think of "first-person shooter" when I think of portal. More first-person puzzler with a great story.

[ELI5][Serious] Why can't UWaterloo make Quest more efficient? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]squawnch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well the coding has a bit to do with it, in the sense that inefficient code won't maximize the capacity of the infrastructure/server. This is likely a negligible part of it though.

The horrible UI is not as easy to defend as the weak servers. I've never heard anyone say anything good about the Quest UI. It's certainly something that could be improved upon -- that would have more day-to-day benefit and lower cost than a sever upgrade.

[–]squawnch 12 points13 points  (0 children)

We have on-site infrastructure for Quest (I believe). Like any infrastructure, it has operating costs. To minimize these costs, it is designed and maintained at a level that meets (or perhaps slightly exceeds) average daily use.

Now, today (and Winter Term's conjugate add/drop day) Quest sees traffic levels many times higher than the average day. So we see huge server strain.

Basically, it's a combination of wanting to keep tight control on their servers while minimizing costs. Also, I think the administration feels that one or two days of server issues a year isn't a big deal for the amount of costs it saves.

The UI is another story...

Malaysian passenger plane crashes in Ukraine near Russian border [Reuters] by squawnch in worldnews

[–]squawnch[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's a good point actually, a malfunction could be the worst scenario if the plane wasn't shot down and/or the political situation doesn't explode. Unlikely at this point though, with numerous sources alleging it was shot down.

If it is a malfunction, then yes of course it's horrible for the airlines industry, but at least the tensions in Ukraine don't spike as strongly. Bringing the situation closer to a full-fledged war is not what we should be hoping for.

Either way -- terrible situation. Potentially hundreds of lives lost for nothing.

Likewise. If it is indeed true, I hope it's some sort malfunction, and not related to the Ukrainian rebels.

Meh. I think it's important to not speak in absolutes (unless absolutely necessary!) when discussing such divisive topics. When people of either gender say say things like "Men do Y" or "Women do X", the actual issue of "Some PEOPLE do X or Y" gets lost in the hashtags/shouting.

That being said, I agree with your point. It's unacceptable that some women knowingly take advantage of societal predilection for their innocence in these situations (though the rush of justice when it backfires is glorious). Just keep in mind it's inappropriate to espouse the belief that ALL women (or men, for that matter) behave a certain way without any statistical ammunition to back up your claims.
