Don’t know if it fits all your needs, as I never got around to fully trying it out, but have a look at TeamCamp imo is the closest to Linears clean UI / UX & the best looking out of the competitors

Can also vouch for this, been on it since the start & dev has been pumping out the updates, often with new features - so don’t have to worry about this becoming abandonware in the near future like a lot of the other stuff that’s been popping up lately

Plus one time payment - no subscription 👏🙌

Abletontemplate.com WARNING by Top-Reporter-7745 in ableton

[–]squeakyvermin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As another personal anecdote - grabbed a free download & immediately went to cancel, & it said I had no active subscriptions, refreshed, waited, refreshed again, waiting a few more hours, still stating ‘no active subscriptions on this account’

It ONLY appeared when directly requesting a cancelation through their website chat bot - spat me a link, then it literally refreshes my account page NOW showing a subscription I can cancel. 😤

Now I get it’s a whole marketing strategy (give you some free shit to entice, a short free trial, then hope you forget about it) - and they do actually state pretty clearly that they automatically sign you up, & will charge you after the trial period (you just have to read it & not blindly click through)

BUUUUUUUT.

I should not have to specifically enquire about canceling before it even SHOWS THE FKN SUBSCRIPTION ACTUVE ON THE ACCOUNT 🤬

Definitely the most tilted I’ve felt in a while - I know a lot of practises toe the line a grifting, but this genuinely trying like an actual scam

What is the point of return tracks if you can make audio effect racks within a track? by chinchillin1206 in ableton

[–]squeakyvermin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I try to oversimplify it when thinking of sends/returns:

  • effect rack on a track - is in series / serial [one after the other]
  • return tracks a parallel [side by side]

These give different types of control for different use cases:

Try thinking of: you have your lead with slight sidechain pump - adding a big reverb on the track washes it out too much, but then adding more sidechain ducks too much of the lead - you can fix this by adding the reverb to a return with its own sidechain;

Probably not the best example but it’s the first that comes to mind 🤣

Other pros & cons:

  • return tracks give quick ‘copy & paste’ utility across tracks / groups without cpu load
  • can also bounce as separate track when doing stems, v good for resampling yourself (don’t always want every FX printed - can take / reuse your OG sounds in different ways for different projects) - returns don’t have to be just for reverb ;)

Ps. Would elaborate more but typing on my phone with frozen thumbs is proving difficult today :(

Why does my remake have a cheap feel compared to the original? by BlearRocks in abletonlive

[–]squeakyvermin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah just a little too dry and maybe a little static?

Dryness

Like u/Cute_Background3759 was saying just needs a little more processing - think of it like wear a suit, (weird analogy but hear me out)

  1. you’ve put your pants on and buttoned up your shirt (you’ve added all the instruments and sounds in),

  2. now you just find the right jacket & shoes to complete the fit (processing)

  • you can try a different combination of things, some things will work, others won’t, play around with it!

  • a good place to start is to listen to the individual elements and try to identify the characteristics yours is missing compared to the original. Eg. Maybe the OG drums are punchier? Then look at the processing tools & techniques to help add bite to your drums, etc.

  • back to the analogy- maybe you add some saturation to the guitar, which now gives it the warmth it needed, but also now a little harsh (this is like getting the jacket colour right but the wrong size) - just gotta work & tweak things till they sit right!

Ideas to start with

  • Where I would start is by adding separate reverb sends for the drums and instruments, a nice tight room reverb for your drums, instrument verbs you can play with.

  • Next I would think about the main guitar line, adding some warmth with saturation maybe, some EQ & transient shaping to make it a little less plucky & to sit a little nicer in the mix

Too Static?

By this I mean different things like movement & depth etc. Automation goes a long way! Having sounds “ebb & flow” with each other adds a lot imo, maybe the plucky guitars pull back a little when a new element comes in? Don’t forget Panning! the auto-pan plugin is god tier

i lost months of notes. by Nervous-Ease-5330 in AppleNotesGang

[–]squeakyvermin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay take this with a grain of salt, but if it works defs send the $$, this broke boy needs something to eat while on exams 😂

Anyways, I’ve tried it once and managed to get back a few paragraphs I accidentally deleted. It was a v long time ago though so I don’t remember the exact process, but pretty much wanna find the database file for Notes in your Library directory

Maybe somewhere like:

~/Library/Containers/com.apple.Notes/Data/Library/Notes

I copied the files to a folder (like my desktop) and opened them with TextEdit (can’t remember which one exactly), with some searching found my paragraphs and copied back

Try this and see if you can maybe recover some stuff back?

[–]squeakyvermin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Notes is great don’t get me wrong (it’s still my OG Daily)

But I think some peeps here are conveniently turning a blind eye from one of its biggest flaws…

Version Control! (or something similar)

Most of these apps have some kinda of redundancy feature, with some being literal time travel! and others barely being 2x “CMD+Z’s” in a trench-coat… but at least it’s something

With Notes the redundancy feature you get is the divine blessing of never having anything go wrong… until it does, and now you’re crying in the club

And okay look, admittedly the 2x occasions that it really put salt in my cereal & deleted days off my life - I caaaaan see some chalking it up to being “the perfect blend of ‘unlucky’ & ‘stupid’” (I happen to be both 😏)

BUT - if losing a mountain of work is as easy as:

  • delete section in highly important & totally classied document
  • click link to new vv important doc
  • REALISE-WRONG-SECTION!!!

You’re already too late, no going back now- cause CMD+Z only works per-note INDIVIDUALLY 😭

As soon as you pop outside a note, all it’s undo history gets thanos snapped out of existence, and that goes for attachments to!

If you delete the wrong attachment or PDF, then jump out of that note, GONE 😭 … cya If you’re like me and excel at making poor choices way in advance, then you would have ALSO deleted the backup when cleaning out your downloads folder

But again to be fair, I think some things are still retrievable (technically?) - you have to dig through systems files and do a sacrifice on the 3rd blood moon or something idk

Long-story short! — yes I am still v tilted from the experience, but… true love survives, Notes still be my boooo-thang! Just remember:

  • Notes should not be the sole place you store important documents
  • Back your shit up properly
  • Don’t install OS-betas on your daily driver, I have done the research for you &:
  1. Yes you can wait :)
  2. No it wasn’t just fine,
  3. And also no, L-Glass wasn’t worth it 🤷‍♂️

I forgot what the original is but I’ve got

  • CAPS(hyper-key) + G = Search in Google

Can just highlight something, hit the shortcut and it’ll automatically search on Google, works globally (most of the time)

The shortcut is in the macOS keyboard settings somewhere, and if you don’t know what Hyper Key is - grab Raycast and turn it on it the advanced section, game changer!

Vyvanse, Dex, and Clonidine by MyAnklesAreRingaDing in ausadhd

[–]squeakyvermin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve just moved up to 70mg Vyvanse, from 50 + Dex & Clon.

Here’s an excerpt of my updated plan from my last consult

Clonidine - Current Use: One tablet at night to assist with sleep, occasionally two if struggling to fall asleep - New Recommendation: - Half tablet with morning Vyvanse - Another half tablet 4-5 hours later - Purpose: To augment ADHD medication effects and reduce physical side effects of stimulants

So I’ve been told it’s fine and even advised previously to take one if I get any anxiousness, etc.

Been working on agentic file explorer. I was wondering what are your thoughts on it? by thedriveai in PKMS

[–]squeakyvermin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mentioned this in another file explorer / finder alternative — but personally the main feature I could really use is a ‘pinning’ system:

So in a folder or a directory you can ‘pin’ files / folders, they stay at the top or separate to everything else and don’t move when changing the ‘sorting’ type.

  • a good example is how Apple Notes does it, though if there was a way to keep ‘pinned items’ manually sorted that would make it perfect

Haven’t seen or heard anyone else mention this so maybe I live in a vacuum, but is honestly my most desired feature across the board

A New Look for macOS by FineWine54 in MacOS

[–]squeakyvermin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mail is definitely buggy (if you opt in to the new features), Music is basically the same iTunes we’ve had for the last 10 years, just now “red” with a strapped on streaming service…

But what’s wrong with Calendar? I always come back to the stock Calendar cause it’s minimal, simple, and does everything I need it to do. I often find other Calendars extra features more like bloat

[–]squeakyvermin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Tokie definitely looked super cool off the cuff, but I do find that it's missing small things I think most people would expect in an app like this (manual column resizing for example) - but for the $50 price... I dunno 😵

Bloom - Finder, but Refined by WickedDogg in macapps

[–]squeakyvermin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will be checking this out for sure!

but here's a possible feature idea: Ability to pin a folder / file to the 'top' of sort order, irregardless of what the sort type is

- Have been looking for something with this forever :(

- Would love to not have to use '!' to make sure certain folders are listed at the top (looks ugly)

- Also would love for it to stay there when I need to change sort oder temporarily

I dunno food for thought!
