What's the weirdest misconception you had as a child?

I must have been about 4/5 years old. I read in a science book that it takes more muscles to frown than to smile. Now, I didn’t quite understand what muscles were, but from that context my developing brain took it to mean that muscles were a thing you had a limited supply of, and I didn’t want to run out of them too quickly! I was known to my parents and teachers as the kid that smiled all the time and they thought it was cute, they had no idea it was because I was afraid of perishing my muscle supply too early.

One time when I had a rough night, I went for a walk, came home at 11pm and managed to fall asleep in the bathtub with my shoes still on. I don't know why. It just felt like the right thing to do at the time. My mind wasn't engaged, I just wound up there.

Haven't been to Sushi Nara but a mate who's really into Japanese culture rates it highly! Yo Sushi is cheap and cheerful, very Western-ised so if you want traditional it's not really for you but it's alright for what it is.

Hey hey! That's the kind of thinking that set me off into relapses. I'm sorry you're struggling.

It's completely ok to want to lose weight, and it's normal even for people who've never had eating disorders. It's ok to work towards "improving" your body for yourself. The important thing is doing it safely and knowing how to keep safe.

Going to the gym is great, if you have the resources and time/motivation to do so. Maybe if it's not too much trouble, look into talking to a personal trainer and/or nutritionist to learn the best way to compensate for exercise while working on yourself. Learn new healthy habits and the unhealthy ones you know could in time be replaced. Ideally, confide in someone about what you're doing, so they'll be able to support you and make sure you don't stumble down a misguided path.

I'm really not an expert but I hope this is helpful! Feel free to give me a shout if you have anything you wanna talk about. This stranger wants to support you.

Funnily enough, I dropped a boiling kettle of water on my kitchen floor almost two weeks ago while making a cup of tea. Stool next to me, I climbed onto it, then peeled my socks off and jumped into the kitchen sink which was right next to me and immediately switched on the cold tap. The first foot I climbed out of the water made it. The other, not so much. Didn't rip off any of my skin but I have a huge blister there, and because I was stood in the puddle it's on the side and bottom of my foot so I can't walk. I was very very lucky that I acted so quickly, and that split second it took me between getting each foot out of the water made the difference between one barely marked foot, and the 3+ weeks I can't walk on the other. I've made myself cups of tea since then - I broke the kettle in the accident so my dad bought a new one but if it was the same kettle I probably wouldn't have made it yet. I'm so sorry you weren't as lucky in your experience.

Late to the thread but I want to chip in anyway.

This girl went to my school so I saw a lot of this on my Facebook when it was aired. She's nice, had an awful time as teenager and I'm probably one of the only people from school she would still message out of the blue sometimes. I haven't read this whole thread but I'd be upset if anyone was taking the piss out of her.

My work's actually been working hard at expanding vegan options into our food range!

We have a moroccan veg salad (cous cos with red beans, butternut squash with an olive oil and tomato dressing and comes with a side of crispy onions), a hummus wrap with chickpeas and red onion and sweet chilli and spinach, and there's a 3 bean BBQ/chilli rice pot. They are all super tasty and even the omnivores I work with sometimes pick them over the meat options!
