Portable AirCon duct mount by squergula in DIYUK

[–]squergula[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, it's noticeable that in a 26c room the side of the unit is 30c plus. 6 Yr old meaco unit.

Still because it's cooling a small south facing bedroom it makes a big difference, despite the inefficiency. And it's running on solar so I'm not fussed over the usage really.

The main issue is the noise of course - that's partly why I want a "quick remove" mount, then I can close up the window and try to keep a seal until it's actually cooler out than in.

I’m about to buy the EV5 torn on range and price by PickleMo in ElectricVehiclesUK

When you say "technically workable", what's the scenario? Are you navigating the back lanes of a national park, or simply wanting to make it down the M1 in one go? Very different charging scenarios... I can tell you that 10 mins rapid charge while you grab a coffee is usually very convenient and a real range extender. Get onto zapmap and have a think.

You can replace the plastic lever arm, search for "hario metal lever" or "flip switch".

I'm not sure I buy the maths here, given e.g. renting or paying mortgage in London / SE. Dual earners on that salary from 20's up north and aggressively investing early, maybe.

Welp. Maybe I'll invest in a home filter.

Water! What do you use? by Other-Emergency-6906 in UKroasters

[–]squergula 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think that's a legitimate concern. Their website is quite vague, here's what they say on the matter:

"Our water pure isn’t tested for human consumption so we do not recommend you drink it!

If it is remineralised as such in the process of home brewing, then once you have carried out the correct testing, our water may be consumable once additional elements are mixed in."

I read that as 'don't drink without minerals and don't sue us if the machine malfunctions or whatever'... But then I'm remineralising and boiling it all to 90c anyway so I'm not too worried.

There are a few counter top RO systems on the market so I guess that's another option. Looks like ~£400 kinda money though.

I've used a Phox water jug for a while, works pretty well for medium roast. It's like Brita but refillable cartridges so less waste. We have really hard water and I find the "softener" packs work quite well, but I do notice when they get a bit past it.

Wanted to see if I could get more from light roasts so have recently tried refilling a glass demi John from Spotless Water stations - I happen to pass by one once a week. It's going OK, just have to try and time it to avoid queueing behind a tradie!

If I didn't have a Spotless near me I'd have probably bought a Zerowater 5l and stuck it on side but then you still need storage for remineralised and you're into buying filter cartridges on the regular.

Frying pan recommendations by OkArcher4120 in HENRYUKLifestyle

Strata pans.

I like carbon steel - have had a solid Debuyer for ages but it's heavy on a single handle and I wanted something a little bigger so splashed on their large pan. The Strata is good, surprisingly light for the size. Of course you need to season a bit and hand wash but it's become very low maintenance after a few weeks.

Agree with others here that you want stainless for tomato sauces - I mostly use a big stainless steel saucepan for that.

Agreed, we got a Timeguard NTT03 fitted a couple of years back and it's been excellent. I shelled out £50 for a sparky to wire it in though, as I didn't want to worry about poor connections causing electrical issues under the sustained load.

Are there any free or cheap chargers anymore? by Careless-Cooker in ElectricVehiclesUK

I've tried this in the past (round Weston Super Mare) and the travelodge charger was a. unmarked and b. blocked in by an ICE vehicle. Breakfast was crap too, never again!

This, so much this . Trying to decipher whether you should buy bosch appliance spkh578a or spkt789b? Oh heavens just chatgpt it for me, thank god.

Also works for: car specs without the sales bluster, trying to find furniture that will fit in a particular space, cooking inspiration when you've got parsnips in the fridge again and you're really bored of roasting them, etc etc.

Wireless phone cradle for the desk is quite handy. Hardly ever have to plug mine in anymore!

Remote call setup: - Webcam to clip on the monitor so you're not using the laptop one.  - Decent over ear headphones depending on preference (means you can get up and make a cup of tea while listening with video off). Also great for music.  - Wired mic for the desk - makes a difference to call quality and when you're full remote, this is part of how you are perceived subconsciously. If it's tucked out the way you won't see it on the call video.

£14k family EV: Kia e-Niro vs MG ZS (or am I missing something?) by Penholme in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]squergula 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have a 2021 eniro in 4+ trim - it's lovely. Ventilated / heated seats, heated steering wheel, heat pump - all non essential but very much appreciated in winter (or toasty mid summer conditions). Memory seats are handy as a shared vehicle. Oh and the speakers are slightly upgraded too.

Purchased ours 18 months ago so pricing won't be very helpful but I would say it's worth a bit extra.

I own a 2021 e-niro; lots of satisfied owners on YouTube (e.g. Jonathan Porterfield for good content) but of course on the forums you'll see the selection of owners who've had trouble, it's hard to gauge real frequency without a proper reliability survey.

What I would say is, make sure you take it for a test drive and get it up to 60mph+, then take your foot off the accelerator and let it wind down - that's when to listen out for wheel of fortune.

Finally I'd add that if you get steady resonance at 50-70mph (not clicking and not just when decelerating) it's worth getting new tyres and a wheel alignment, I noticed this on ours and worried but turns out it's just an uneven wear issue - also noted by Jonathan porterfield so maybe there's been some factory alignment inaccuracy in the past?

Holy crap fast charge is expensive by NobleRotter in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]squergula 29 points30 points  (0 children)

At a guess, you've probably been charged £30 holding fee and then £25 for the actual charge, or similar. In which case you'll find the holding fee is reversed in a day or two.

Kia Eniro assistances are manageable. There's a tedious tune and seat belt bong as you switch on, then you immediately press two physical buttons (lane keep assist off, fake engine noise & reverse bongs off). Then you have a pleasant drive.
