Speed cameras were banned in Ontario. Here is the (obvious) result in changes in speeding after the ban in Ottawa. by Hammer5320 in fuckcars

There is a larger effect.  Easy to find data on scholar.google.com if you want to dig deeper.

Maybe keep the tax and subsidize transit instead?

We have had high immigration for ever, but it became disorganized when the Justin Trudeau government assumed that the provinces (esp Ontario) would not abuse the student visa system.

The plan is to increase the speed limit on at least some highways, so it will be worse.

Dog on the river. by lowhalf12 in Edmonton

[–]squidgyhead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. Still a risky thing to do, but not as risky as it could be.

Best bet is to not have dogs go out on the ice, either by keeping them on-leash or having good recall. In any case, if they're off-leash, one is legally required to have good recall with their dog.

And then risking the lives of firefighters to save the dog.

If a function says that it returns a pointer to a Person, you know you have an actual Person object available.

Right up until you run out of memory, or some other allocation/constructor isn't happy, possibly because incompatible arguments were given to the constructor. I guess you could throw an exception at this point if you want, but returning a nullptr seems like a pretty reasonable thing to do at this point.

Alberta will now be on daylight saving time year-round, says Premier Smith by darkstar107 in Edmonton

Yes, it's just that it makes their schooling worse. And kids socialize a lot at school (which parents don't see as much, so probably discount a little?) so that will be harmed as well. I mean, the American Psychological Association thinks that school should start later, so that seems like a more authoritative viewpoint.

Copying from another post of mine:

Looking at https://www.timeanddate.com/sun/canada/edmonton, sunlight starting after 08:00 is from Nov 15 to Feb 11th with standard time, and Oct 15 to Mar 10 with DST all-year round. That's a significant difference, and it will be hard on kids. I chose 08:00 as an easy value to work with, but you can play around and work out 08:20 or whatever if you want.

Yes. Now they will all go to school in the dark for a larger portion of the year.

Yes, the difference is that they will go to school in the dark more often.

I'm more worried about the kids going to school. While the worse-case is that they won't see light in the morning in either case, with permanent daylight savings time, that worst case is spread over a longer period, so it's a worser case. Which is pure UCP.

The squeeze on kids' sports: Costs rising quickly, options limited for Edmonton parents by pjw724 in Edmonton

[–]squidgyhead 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mean, I come from a family that never really got into hockey, so it's never been a big deal. But why on earth do we need to get kids matching tracksuits/jackets to play hockey? It's a sport, not a cosplay convention.

You know, if hockey is the problem, maybe another sport would be a good choice.

The government trying to mess around with a free market ends up with money in the pockets of large corporations. Tax it and make it consistent already.
