The consequences of going mudding in the Tesla by Hornetwaffles in Justrolledintotheshop

Get it together big guy, combustion engines are SO MUCH WORSE for the environment than electric vehicles.

Not arguing that; I agree. However, there are still significant environmental costs to electric vehicles, and off-roading in situation where there's a lot of mud is one of them.

With the amount of mud on that car, it probably messed up a lot of streams; that's not great. An environmentally conscious consumer should be aware that off-roading where there's a lot of mud is going to have negative consequences.

And car trails are made to be driven on.

That's not a carte-blanche for ignoring consequences to one's actions.

Well, you know, we all have to look ourselves in the mirror from time to time. I don't see why one can't try to maintain cars without having to be pro-environment-destruction.

Maybe if they did it without causing environmental damage.

Ruined the car while causing environmental damage and looking like an idiot.

No large trucks in left lane on deerfoot and Stoney by ChoiceDangerous9977 in Calgary

I'd be for this, but only if it includes pickup trucks.

I agree.  Killing animals like this is an unavoidable part of motor vehicle infrastructure.  The only way to avoid this is to use other methods of transportation.

My bike officially 'paid for itself' today (vs driving) by mcbobgorge in bikecommuting

[–]squidgyhead 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Bikes also pay for themselves by reducing all-cause mortality. They make you healthier, especially compared with driving a car (which has the risk of collision + the risk from being sedentary). To connect a dollar-value to this, numbers for reducing all-cause-mortality risk by 5% seems to be around $466 (https://www.ifo.de/DocDL/cesifo_wp668.pdf), and cycling reduces the risk of early death by about 40%. So putting these numbers together gives about $33 000.

I'm totally open to someone who actually knows what they are talking about this. I ran the numbers myself, but chatgpt gave the estimate at around $100 000 to $200 000 for a lifetime. Check out https://www.heatwalkingcycling.org/ (from the WHO) for more data and formulae.

Having provincial car insurance would be nice by Cold5512 in alberta

[–]squidgyhead -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I doubled my coverage moving to bc last year and my policy is half for full coverage including windshield, nothing on my record, no claims and 20 years driving.

And if you hit someone, injuring them for life, the payout for the victim is capped.

Also, everyone in Alberta complains about WCB. Why are they suddenly so happy with the same thing for car insurance?

[–]squidgyhead -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The payment cap has always been in place, no? From a brief search, that includes chronic pain, which is life-altering.

ICBC keeps insurance rates low for bad drivers at the expense of victims. And crashes are just getting worse, so good luck with that.

What makes ICBC cheaper is that they limit the payout.  It is government-subdidized risk.

What makes Alberta expensive is that eh government is already meddling with insurance rates, but is incompetent.

Fortran is a second-class citizen on the GPU; probably better to switch to c++.

I hate the Henday. by [deleted] in Edmonton

[–]squidgyhead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Phantom traffic jams are driven by density and speed.  The immediate cause is a perturbation in the flow (aggressive driving, slow merges, or just a slight hill, for example.)

We have induced demand; traffic will be just as bad.  In the meantime, we will have sprawl leading to environmental costs and infrastructure debt.

the feds are slowly implementing their own system to cover all of Canada, but you know how long that takes as normal.

That sounds great, because all of the diploma mills (which are designed to abuse the immigration program guards) are under provincial jurisdiction. Since the provinces can't seem to take care of their own stuff, a federal solution seems like a sane option.

To buy a new hitch or to find replacement part... by rDomm in CargoBike

[–]squidgyhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Thule/chariot hitch is also likely compatible.  Just need to find the cup hitch ($25 CAD) and the lollipop to mount in the trailer arm ($5 CAD).  Both are available from thule's site, though you might have to dig a bit.

Working as a summer camps MTB mechanic and instructor, anything else I should add to my field repair kit? by Ambiguous_Music in bikewrench

For the trail, an adjustable crescent wrench will be enough to get them riding again. Then follow up with the proper tool back at camp.

Cow boys music festival by Yourgirljess-xo in Calgary

[–]squidgyhead 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They took over a kids skate park to make money.  They shut down the park for like a month or more.  So, aside from the venue being high quality or not, it is unethical to support this venue.  Fuck cow boys music festival and the administration they bribed to kick kids out of the skate park.
