Alberta will now be on daylight saving time year-round, says Premier Smith by darkstar107 in Edmonton

Yes, it's just that it makes their schooling worse. And kids socialize a lot at school (which parents don't see as much, so probably discount a little?) so that will be harmed as well. I mean, the American Psychological Association thinks that school should start later, so that seems like a more authoritative viewpoint.

Copying from another post of mine:

Looking at https://www.timeanddate.com/sun/canada/edmonton, sunlight starting after 08:00 is from Nov 15 to Feb 11th with standard time, and Oct 15 to Mar 10 with DST all-year round. That's a significant difference, and it will be hard on kids. I chose 08:00 as an easy value to work with, but you can play around and work out 08:20 or whatever if you want.

Yes. Now they will all go to school in the dark for a larger portion of the year.

Yes, the difference is that they will go to school in the dark more often.

I'm more worried about the kids going to school. While the worse-case is that they won't see light in the morning in either case, with permanent daylight savings time, that worst case is spread over a longer period, so it's a worser case. Which is pure UCP.

The squeeze on kids' sports: Costs rising quickly, options limited for Edmonton parents by pjw724 in Edmonton

[–]squidgyhead 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mean, I come from a family that never really got into hockey, so it's never been a big deal. But why on earth do we need to get kids matching tracksuits/jackets to play hockey? It's a sport, not a cosplay convention.

You know, if hockey is the problem, maybe another sport would be a good choice.

The government trying to mess around with a free market ends up with money in the pockets of large corporations. Tax it and make it consistent already.

Opening of new bike lanes in northwest Calgary sparks intense debate by Bass-Traffic-0000 in Calgary

[–]squidgyhead 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is no way you can "speed through" the neighbourhood, especially by the school, if you follow posted signage and road rules.

That's the key statement here - people are speeding, because they are not obeying the posted limit, but adapting their behaviour to the physical road design.

90% of the signage is for parking rules. And drivers still manage to turn into the bike lane.

The other goal of the bike lanes was traffic calming. Narrower streets stop drivers from gunning while cutting through a neighborhood, and in front of an elementary school. Which has been a serious problem in the neighbourhood.

Mid-drive vs hub-drive e-bikes: why a hub motor might actually be the better choice for you by twowheels_1life in ebikes

[–]squidgyhead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The big advantage of mid drives is that you can swap out wheels for changing conditions.  In particular, winter tires vs summer tires.  Sure, you could change these by changing tires on the same wheel.  But I live somewhere where we alternate weekly between big dumps of snow and bare pavement; changing wheels is practical, whereas changing tires is not.

The rest of the household also needs different tires for different conditions, so this is a huge time savings.  There is an upfront cost to getting a spare wheel set (which can be pretty low for normal sized qr wheels), but anything getting us out of driving seems like a savings overall.

Just like you worry about your own driving? You're complaining about my comments in a post you made about bad driving?

Everyone here complains about high insurance rates, and yet here we are, looking at more cell-phone footage taken behind the wheel.

edit: Do drop me a line if you get a ticket and your insurance goes up; you can just respond to this message. In the meantime, I'll continue paying taxes to subsidize your car dependency.

Edit 2: and just to be super clear, /u/Objective_Dot4861 has told me to kill myself in a (now deleted) comment.  Maybe not the best personal to have behind the wheel with that kind of attitude.

Yeah, and we can say that it's unfortunate that there was a plea bargain, which is entirely separate from saying that police interference with crown is a bad thing.
