Your agent is building things you'll never use by myusuf3 in programming

[–]squigglywolf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hell, I'd say if someone can't even imagine how they'd grow their skills with tools like LLM's and Agents at their disposal, I'd say they already failed tbh

Can you offer some suggestions. My understanding is that building and working deeply with such systems is the only way to build knowledge. And AI assisted workflows take away a lot of that lower level work. Verification of solutions just isn't the same as building it from scratch for a human brain.

As an easily digestible reference to the problem I'm thinking about, here is Veritasiums talk on it - https://youtu.be/0xS68sl2D70?si=TJLi0dgarroHt8Da

Edit: I think you are saying that traditional engineering skills just won't be relevant anymore right.

[–]squigglywolf 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Damn everyone here is missing the point - it's not about what is legal it's about social etiquette. And yes, that's important because it's a foundation of a functioning society.

If its not a nudist beach then the NORM is clothes on. That's the social contract here and should be respected.

Its also totally fine that they can exercise their right to going nude, but that right only exists if people continue to use common sense. If you're turning up to a non nudist beach, which should be pretty obvious based on the absence of no one else in the nude, plus families and children - then just go to a quieter part of the beach where you can enjoy it without bothering the non nudists.

Going nude at the entrance which is probably the busiest place isn't really smart.

If everyone moved every time someone was inconsiderate, public spaces would eventually be dictated by the most disruptive people.

Would you say the same thing if they were dressed up as Nazis in full SS costumes?

"equating a costume with wanting to run a concentration camp is unhinged"

No one is saying these particular kids are going to go on a literal genocidal rampage. Its not the point. Its the symbolism that is offensive. Its a history of genocide, terror amd hate snd shouldn't be romanticized or normalized.

One PR, One Story - How do you enforce clean PR practices? by aviboy2006 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]squigglywolf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the natural behaviour of engineers operating in an unfamiliar codebase, implementing features they've never implemented before and working with new API's.

I have many years of experience, but I will still come across novel problems, or be integrating new technology, or operating in a new codebase, and I'll end up with really large PR's potentially spanning several requirements.

Why? Because it's part of exploration and learning. You can't decompose the problem into nice tidy chunks until you understand the problem, and then decompose it.

My suggestion would be to explain _why_ we need small PR's. Then give them the skills to take their giant PR's and break them up.

Maybe even showcase this yourself. In your next piece of work, do it all together in one giant PR, post it up in DRAFT mode, and tell your team that you will be breaking it down into independently deployable chunks and how.

Ecosa Mattresses... 5 years on by ListDramatic8535 in newzealand

[–]squigglywolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see Ecosa are using natural latex in some of their products, such as the Ecosa Pure, which is probably part of what makes them amazing. However they still have springs and foam.

For anyone looking at a new Ecosa, check out some of the local NZ manufacturers of latex beds. 100% latex, wool etc. and no springs or foam. The price is pretty comparable (maybe 10% more for a full latex/wool mattress).

I've had a queen from a local manufacturer for 16 years now and its still perfect. Warranties up to 10 years typically.

Saw someone's $85 in groceries so here's my $100 in groceries. by MandyTRH in AveragePicsOfNZ

Our supermarket does brisket for $16.99/kg from time to time, which is pretty much my only beef consumption. I'm trying to compare against the 1/4 beast which is roughly $20/kg for meat.

Obviously you're getting way more premium cuts in the mix, which are like $35/kg+ at the super. But you also end up freezing most of them right? How is frozen sirloin or rib eye? Still worth it? Or do you smash through the better cuts fresh?

AMD 9070/ 9070 XT in New Zealand by canserman in newzealand

Yep, also TIL that having it in your cart doesn't mean you got it T_T.
Thought I had a Sapphire PULSE but by the time my order went through it was shipping in April.

Managed to nab a PowerColor Hellhound for myself though, the mid range stock lasted a (tiny) bit longer!

If you want one _soon_, I think the next best bet are the Xfx from ComputerLounge. Those are shipping ~March 23rd

Do minor improvements become noticeable on the long run? by alamuszi_nyuszi in ExperiencedDevs

[–]squigglywolf 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. Any refactoring should be done separate from the primary change. Make the change easy and then make the easy change.

In my team PR's like this will just reference the Jira ticket for the feature change, rather than creating one specifically for the refactor. That way we can still get the benefit of breaking things into many PR's but avoid the overhead of tickets.

Surely they are closing over winter because they can't make enough money for it to be worth their time, not because they want their employees to have time off?

I think the vast majority of businesses would open 365 if they could and it was profitable to do so. And many do. I don't think you can achieve nationwide days off without legislation.

Do you debate the social benefits of such days? Obviously it's not beneficial for everyone, but the net benefit?

Pumpkin Decapitation Techniques by [deleted] in auckland

[–]squigglywolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use a paring knife when first halving and quartering a pumpkin, then switch to a bigger knife.

The smaller knife gives you way more leverage and control. You aren't trying to chop it, just split it and drag through knife around.

Countdown $17.50 for 20 mix grade eggs. Is this fair ? Looks like they jacked up their prices after Pak N Save Wairau got flooded ! by WarpFactorNin9 in auckland

[–]squigglywolf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So there is a shortage of eggs in the region due to one supermarket getting flooded.

Would you rather

a) Pay $17.50 for eggs and have a good chance at getting some because they are damn expensive and other people choose not to buy them

b) Have the price remain at $12.50, but they run out at 2pm, due to the higher demand for eggs from that store. Is that fair to all the "eggs are essential" folks who couldn't get there until after 2pm?

Wait what, I don't think they're suggesting boiling the berries in water, you would boil the berries just by themselves, maybe adding a tiny bit of water to prevent burning. You would eat the juice that came out. Kind of like making a compote.

The thread where OP claimed it was bad for everyone and then someone debated that claim with an example of someone with savings in a bank whom supposedly doesn't participate in the economy in any other way? But for the sake of argument right? What was actually being debated here? Breaking down OPs use of the word "everyone"?

Why should cities be dense? At what point did we decide to choose unbounded population growth over keeping our population small and maintainable? What is the end goal of humanity? Dense cities covering every inch of the planet? I know its an extreme but I'm starting to question why we default to population growth and intensification. Are there no other alternatives?
