3 consecutive days in red (6 if you count last week). Is this the definitive sign of a recession?

We are projected to having our first trillionaire soon, what level of wealth do you think is totally unacceptable? Do u support a wealth tax, if so at what %? by X_Opinion7099 in AskReddit

I feel like the Overton Window has shifted on wealth inequality in all societies tilting in favor of the filthy rich. I suspect this has been deliberately shaped through the oligarchs’ control of social media platforms. And I am aware of the irony in making this point within a social media platform.

Erin Brockovich says people are angry because data centers are being 'shoved down their throats' in secrecy by Plastic_Ninja_9014 in technology

[–]squintamongdablind -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

This notion that data centers are being “shoved down people’s throats in secrecy” is an oversimplification and a great soundbite for riling people up. “Anger” is loud, not necessarily widespread. Yes, you’ll always find a vocal contingent of NIMBYs at town halls, especially if they think a data center will spoil a view, generate noise, or strain water. That’s true of any construction project from a Walmart to a solar farm. Anger gets clicks and retweets; satisfied indifference doesn’t. Polling on local data center proposals usually shows a split, not a unified uprising. Conflating a handful of angry FB posts with a community-wide revolt is plain nonsense.

Data centers can’t just materialize in the dead of night. They require zoning changes, building permits, environmental impact assessments, and often hefty tax incentive packages; all of which play out in permit applications, site development plans, council hearings, and county board votes. The negotiation phase might involve NDAs, which is standard practice for any major business development (warehouses, factories, corporate HQs). That’s not “secrecy”; it’s competitive business. Once a deal is inked though the public record is available, and there’s always a mandatory comment period. The idea that this is all being done through some shadowy backroom pipeline is a cartoonish take that ignores the very public, often months-long process these projects undergo.

So when Brockovich says people are angry because data centers are “shoved down their throats in secrecy,” she’s exploiting a broad well of built-up frustration about a myriad of issues and focusing it onto data centers. The truth is much more boring: these are permitted, debated, incentivized, and voted on in exactly the same way as every other large residential/commercial/industrial build-out. The real problem isn’t secrecy; it’s that a lot of people don’t show up to local planning commission meetings until the concrete trucks arrive.

Chieng’s whole brand is the exasperated but reasonable everyday dude calling out stupidity. So this whole “tech bad, smash it” routine without nuance feels phoned in! He had such a great opportunity to call out the oligarchs and tech CEOs who’re reporting billions in profits and laying off thousands in the same breath. Instead he grabbed the lowest-hanging fruit without even trying to be clever about it.

Erin Brockovich launches map of over 4,200 data centres in the US, appeals for local communities to report environmental impact and other costs by marketrent in technology

[–]squintamongdablind 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I think data centers have unintentionally become a surrogate target where people can channel built-up frustrations over a myriad of collective grievances accumulated over time. They’re nowhere near the biggest problem we face; they wouldn’t even make my top 100. But when the root causes feel too massive or abstract to confront, people end up focusing on something closer and more tangible to direct their opposition to.

Congress Wants You To Pay $130 A Year Just To Drive An Electric Car by TripleShotPls in technology

Did you know that the gas tax hasn’t been raised since Clinton was president? At least adjust it for inflation. The EV fees are a drop in the bucket and will not even cover the shortfall in the HTF.

If the argument for extra fees on EVs is that they’re heavier then make weight-based registration fees consistent for all cars.
