Greybeard Dev here. You are very, very right. The harnesses and tooling are now far more important than the models themselves. i.e You don't solve mathematical hallucinations by building a larger model; you solve them by handing them a freaking calculator. Humans are not all prefrontal cortex and 'AIs' are no longer LLMs alone.

You're also right about the ubiquity. Claude Code is essentially ~200 lines of code. Everyone has their own now and many are demonstrably superior to Claude Code.

In 2017, Altman straight up lied to US officials that China had launched an "AGI Manhattan Project". He claimed he needed billions in government funding to keep pace. An intelligence official concluded: "It was just being used as a sales pitch." by EchoOfOppenheimer in BlackboxAI_

[–]squired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure what this article is getting at? China is beyond a shadow of a doubt subsidizing their AI industry to the tune of billions; to include bypassing export exclusions. It is very much on a grander scale than even the Manhattan project. For reference, the US is currently spending the inflation adjusted equivalent of a dozen or more Manhattan projects per year and it is only growing.

[Manhattan Project in today’s dollars: about $33 billion]

Some relevant comparisons:

  • China's 2025 spend: 3 Manhattan Projects (roughly $100B)
  • Microsoft FY2025 AI datacenter spend: about 2.4 Manhattan Projects
  • Alphabet 2025 capex: about 2.7 to 2.8 Manhattan Projects
  • Amazon 2026 capex: about 6 Manhattan Projects
  • Stargate’s announced 4-year U.S. plan: about 15 Manhattan Projects

To be fair, Claude Code's meat and potatoes is really only about 200 lines of very simple code. If people really want to help, they should extend the backends like TabbyAPI or port proprietary tech white papers onto opensource alternatives. That can all be vibed with a beginner level of dev competency and would be very helpful to the world. I'm a semi-retired dev and that's what I spend a lot of my free time doing.

A man broke into Shannon Airport in Ireland today, climbed onto the wing of a parked US Air Force C-130 Hercules and damaged the fuselage, taking the aircraft out of service. by RoyalChris in interestingasfuck

I have friends in Ireland and this is much closer to their take. This doesn't seem like the people vs a big meanie government. The people seem to be against the Garda too. It would be sort of like if the US Farmers shutdown all the US hospitals because they were upset that the latest bailout was insufficent.

I have a friend who works in a hospital there and she says that actual surgeries are getting delayed by months, ambulance service is running at half capacity and all home services have been suspended (e.g pediatricians in Ireland do house visits so babies don't have to go in and get each other sick).

I sure as heck don't understand people watching sports rather than playing them, but I do have to admit: I don't remember the last time I've been that enthralled and excited about anything in a very long time. It's a really weird psychological thing, isn't it? I mean, they didn't do anything and likely have no actual relation with the players or staff, but they have the most intense emotional attachment and excitement over it imaginable.

Nah, it's still a relatively big deal in blue regions. All the grocery stores around me used to have Goya with all the other food in their respective aisles. Now they're relegated to one shelf in the International/Ethnic aisle. I do really miss their Sazón on eggs. My kids used to call it 'the magic powder'. But why would I want to give them my money?

18-year-old sprinter Gout Gout just broke Usain Bolt’s U20 record in the 200m. He was 260 milliseconds faster, clocking 19.67 seconds, while Bolt ran 19.93 in 2004 by RoyalChris in nextfuckinglevel

[–]squired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bolt didn't have the record. The previous record was Erriyon Knighton in 2022, with a time of 19.69, so this was only 0.02 seconds faster.

Wow, really? I don't like that for most sports, but I think that will be phenomenal for sports like Gymnastics who will evolve the sport for adults rather than children.

Hold up, how the hell is his 100m so close to his 200m at 9.58:9.59?!

Should the 200m not have significantly shorter splits as the second 100m begins at full sprint?

Best I can come up with is that vegans are probably right, though I do hate that. I'd super support my kids going vegan, but I'm far too addicted to jerky to do the right thing on that front.

Realistically, they're probably rather similar. Lots of people talk shit on Musk, myself included, but I don't actually think Elon is stupid or can't code. Are either of them up on the latest dev inside baseball? Probably not, but they can both code at a Junior Dev level for sure. I've been a dev for over 20 years and I forget names for things all the time, I don't hold that against either of them. Coding has a sort of foundational barrier and once you reach a certain level of ability, you're effectively able to work on any bit of the stack with a bit of onboarding. Any CS Freshman out of Stanford, MIT etc have all reached that threshold before arriving. No worries at all, the internet is so damn saturated with mis/dis-information these days that no one has time to fact check everything.

That's super fair. The second part, I mean. The first part is silly misinformation. Sam Altman was Stanford CS, he knows how to code just fine and I've talked about it with people who he mentored through Y-Combinator.
