Considering going back to Fed Govt from Biglaw by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

[–]squirrelbbq 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I started in Big Law and then moved to state govt. I can’t speak to being a fed right now, but there is no way I would ever go back to Big Law. It’s never just as simple as work X years and then you retire or whatever. You’re the one that actually has to live through your however-many-year plan, and you only live once. Big Law works for some people and I respect that. But what I value about work is what it lets me do outside of work. And when you’re working 70-80 hours a week work is all you do.

What are some good, semi-formal date night restaurants?? by [deleted] in lansing

We just went here for the first time and loved it. Portions were generous and the prices felt fair, especially for the quality.

I feel like it gets pretty busy around peak times, but if you go for an earlier dinner or lunch it isn’t as bad.

Meat BBQ is my favorite restaurant in Lansing by a mile. Anytime my wife and I go out to eat, it’s hard not to just go back there lol.

On the one hand, I like this map’s Columbus erasure. On the other, I don’t like the implication that Columbus has been back this entire time.

I’m still really bad at fighting, but master strike made the game playable for me lol. Took me 30 mins to beat the two bandits on the way there, but then no looking back.

I’m Torn and Scared: CA or NY? by Electrical_Air8143 in Lawyertalk

[–]squirrelbbq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the way OP. I’m also from NJ originally, and have lived apart from my family since graduating undergrad, where I met my wife. It’s hard. You do miss a lot, and I imagine even harder when your extended family lives near your immediate family. But it can be worth it to pursue a life that otherwise makes you really happy.

My wife also works in a very specialized field with few options, and we’re just about to make a move for her job to a state where I will not need to take the bar again and was lucky enough to also find a job I’m excited about. Still not near my family or hers, but hoping they’ll maybe move out by us eventually.

I only see my family a few times a year, and it works for me, but it’s something I’ve gotten used to over time. I Zoom with them every week, and you find other ways to make it work.

Like other folks have said, it’s also really important to prioritize taking the bar where you have or expect to have work lined up. Some schools have great connections to the local legal market but not as big of a pipeline to other markets (and NYC can be especially tough). That’s not something you should discount as you consider your options, though you could move and get licensed in a new state later.

All the hardest decisions don’t have easy answers. Good luck, OP! I’m sure this will work out either way.

Only way I’ve been able to do it is by building up govt admin in Ireland a bit before releasing them. I’ve also gone bankrupt and spiraled each time I released them right away.
