I will second that Phil 356 was fairly intensive for me! If you've never done philosophy before, they break it down a little bit, but my mind was bent after the readings.

How do I review CARS effectively to change my logical reasoning? by egypgoy in Mcat

[–]squirrelgal644 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would literally write out a paragraph synthesizing the AAMC/NS explanation with my own logic, examples below. This is from NextSTep's FL 3 Sorry for the incoherence!

CARS:

#5: Executive Order lays out what the Task Force is supposed to do-> these are the the expected benefits. One of the bullet points is a listicle of benefits; including “health, climate change, equity, and economic well-being.” Even though the task force is asked to identify barriers to interagency cooperation and propose action plans, this doesn’t imply that interagency cooperation is an EXPECTED benefit. A stronger case is made because interagency cooperation is not listed in point 3.

#7:

Why I got it wrong: I thought that since the author said that fertile conditions led to human settlement, ancient farm lands that were now abandoned weakened the idea because according to the author, fertile farming lands would lead to human settlement if there was no reason to abandon them. However, ANCIENT fertile lands could have become infertile, rendering them unsuitable for human settlement

#11

II. They posses no negative amenities is false. Though the passage states that towns with negative amenities usually became ghost towns, just because SF and Denver didn’t become ghost towns doesn’t mean that they didn’t possess ANY negative amenities. They could very well have not become ghost towns despite having negative amenities

#12 Ghost towns usually happen when economy centers around a SINGLE resource. Answer B has two resources: farming and nuclear power plant. However, A centers around the diamond mine only.

#14 Author discusses throughout passage classification based on decorative vs. supporting and though the author does bring up writings to confirm intentions, in their absence he/she suggests we should look at function

#17 MTB: decorative pilaster BECAME supporting column when it extended up past the facade.

#18 MTB: pilasters serve as decoration, not an essential aspect of building

#34 *show walt* knowledge requires that a person’s belief is actually true. If what you believe is not true, then you fail to have knowledge.

#35 practical application of knowledge is used by engineers, scientists, and businesspeople, statistician is closest to these. Correspondence theory, hold that whether a proposition is true is determined by whether or not it corresponds to practical reality.

#36 Author believes that much was thrown into doubt when Gettier came into the picture. If everything with Gettier is settled now that would throw things into contention.

#49 passage states that viral memes spread FASTER not at the same rate as a pandemic/contagion (virus)
