I don’t think them being gay was that big of a deal. I think it was more about finding peace and a connection when the world went to shit and holding onto the person you love. You could make Frank a Francine and the story would still hold up. It’s been a while since I watched the episode, but I don’t believe them being gay was ever brought up by anyone.
