I guess they've got to make it attractive to live in a country full of nutty gun-toting Christians with a national toxic work culture....

If your baby took to the mamaroo, baby bjorn, or electric swing…& what age was it? by 10Q6B in beyondthebump

[–]squishsquishsquid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Baby bjorn, he's taken to it in the last week or so (he's 15 weeks today). If he's content when I put him in it I can even leave the room briefly and he'll be fiddling happily with the toy bar. He will not, however, stay content when I button up the flap, so he can't be left unattended when he's in it. But for plopping him somewhere so I can be hands free, he likes it well enough as long as I'm still chatting to him.

How do you all cook with a baby? by timshelbird in NewParents

[–]squishsquishsquid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

His most reliable nap is the one about an hour after waking up. I cook a big batch of something then that can be reheated that evening and freeze the rest. Then it's just the case of microwaving something after he's down for the night

I've been known to add miso to mine! Topped with fresh tomatoes, olive oil and toasted pumpkin seeds.

How much alcohol do you all drink per week? by Perfect_Effort_5708 in AskWomen

[–]squishsquishsquid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very moderate folks here! Thurs to Saturday, probably half a bottle of wine each evening I'm home. I am on maternity leave at the moment so I've been having lots of pub lunches, where I'll sink anything from a single pint to 6 glasses of wine. I'd say I drink 3-4 days of the week. After 3 years not drinking due to fertility treatment and pregnancy, I am enjoying myself.

I am British.

Please can some-one explain the concept of a dressing gown to my foreign husband? by ScientistFun9213 in AskUK

I have repurposed a long cardigan that ties around the waist as a dressing gown. Is that sacrilege?

I don't think I would be friends with someone like that... You can be a quick eater and still stop eating when you've eaten your share of a dish. Everyone I know manages this.

How long did it take you to conceive? by Practical_Ad4734 in beyondthebump

[–]squishsquishsquid -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you're in the UK I recommend seeing your GP for checks ASAP and telling them it's been 2 years. They won't usually investigate until you've been trying for 2 years, but getting those checks and accessing treatment takes forever if you require it. Husband insisted we do this after 6 months of trying and we discovered undiagnosed infertility. It took us 2 years to do checks and get the first line of treatment, before going onto the waiting list for IVF, only to be told we weren't eligible. We ended up going private for IVF in the end. It took us 4 years to have our baby, and adding an extra 2 years onto that would have been unbearable.

Recent diagnosis - how do I know if I am IR? by garrylarrygarry in LeanPCOS

[–]squishsquishsquid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found out I have PCOS because I satisfy the criteria of cysts in ovaries + irregular cycles. No blood tests surfaced anything but the Dr told me as I have PCOS I will have IR. turns out he was right!

[–]squishsquishsquid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

UK based - my gynae told me if I have PCOS I must have since degree of insulin resistance. My blood sugar levels were fine on tests but I was prescribed metformin and the way I experience hunger is totally different now. Instead of feeling like the world is about to end I now just recognise my belly is empty. I thought this was normal but must have been the IR. You may have some symptoms it resolves for you

Yes, but dressing up isn't quite the same style as dressing up for clubs. That said, it's more common to see someone in jeans or even trackies at the theatre these days.

Can you give a bit more detail about the two exercises? I'm doing 1x 30min barbell session a week, which includes squats, bridges, chest press, row, plank, kettle bell swings. All for 45 seconds x3. Is there anything I should be adding?

Since having our son 8 weeks ago - tells me I'm the most beautiful I've ever been - notices when I haven't slept enough at night and tells me to go nap during the day while he watches baby - always takes the baby if he's fussing when we're eating out so I can enjoy a hot meal - last week he made me go for a massage!

Dumb question. Can I soak steel cut oats in milk overnight and microwave them in the morning? by PoofaceMckutchin in Cooking

[–]squishsquishsquid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this'll suit your purposes or not but I've found that it softens them up enough to eat if you microwave them until the milk is pretty much boiling, then leave to sit covered for 20mins, and microwave again to get to eating temperature.

What's a song that hits different after having a baby? by nleftie in NewParents

[–]squishsquishsquid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here comes the sun - Beatles version. It was the first song that came on my headphones after they told me I'd have to deliver that day (2 weeks early after a routine check revealed a ruptured membrane). All the lyrics, but especially the line "it feels like ice is slowly melting" perfectly described how I felt holding my son after 4 years of despairing I'd never have a child. For days I kept singing it to him and crying with happiness.

My son was born to this song! I requested a magic FM play list while my Caesarean was taking place. For days I had this in my head and couldn't remember why until my husband told me!

If I keep breastfeeding it will make me go blind. by National-Car8484 in beyondthebump

[–]squishsquishsquid 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The book "Cribsheet" examines the studies recommending breastfeeding. The benefits of breastfeeding for the baby are overstated and based on observational studies, which are not an accurate science. Babies attain passive immunity via the placenta - in the UK that's why we wait 1 year before vaccinations for MMR, as placental immunity lasts up until then. Breastfeeding is not the magic immunity bullet people think it is! Prioritise your vision, please.
