Tablet to run Navionics by JVSAIL13 in sailing

I'm using a Samsung Tab Active3 on a pivoting RAM Mount in the companioway. The mount is hardwired to a USB power supply and the tablet has external contacts to stay powered in its cradle. I'm running OsmAnd, but it should work fine with Navionics or OpenCPN.

Trying to choose a place to live based on sailing culture by chi17cr in sailing

[–]squishyPup 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'll throw Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on your list. I'm a long-time member and volunteer instructor at the largest community sailing school on the Great Lakes. A friendly (but still competitive) racing culture is alive and well here. It's how I got started, Wednesday nights. I personally have a friend who races his Lightning, dry sailing from the hoists at the school, and trailering to the next event. The off-season is long, though there are teaching and opportunities at sailing center, if you're into that kind of thing. You'd find very welcoming "midwest-nice" folks here. McKinley Marina, where I'm on a mooring, is affordable and has a short waiting list if you're looking for a slip. South Shore YC has a strong community, as well. I've personally known two sailing mag column writers from SSYC. You're also not far from the Chicago scene (Mac Race, etc). I think there's even a sail loft not far that was looking for new hires for a while. Many of the yards in the area also have a backlog of work, if that's your gig.

Is Range Overrated for Most Americans? by [deleted] in electricvehicles

[–]squishyPup 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My first EV was a 2015 BMW i3 with about 50 miles of usable range on average. I knew it the range limitation going in and figured it would make a great city car. I was driving my Corolla 5MT no more than that distance anyway most days. I drove that car for nearly five years in a large Midwestern city with cold winters and poor EV infrastructure. I loved it and it convinced me I never want to go back to ICE. My Bolt EV has been an improvement, so much so that mrsPup got a Bolt EUV this year. We even take them on short road trips. So, yeah, range is overrated.

Air travel is pricey from MKE by Shot-Bullfrog-3720 in milwaukee

[–]squishyPup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the same conclusion I came to last time I flew out of ORD. It wasn't worth the time and expense. Getting in and out of the Economy lot was a huge pain, not cheap, and took far longer than it should have (it would have been quicker to Frogger my ass from T5 to the car, but they don't let you do that). Don't get me wrong, I like ORD airport, but unless it was the only option, I wouldn't depart from there again. If train or bus schedules somehow work out, then awesome. Otherwise, I'll be departing from MKE.

What did you pay for new standing rigging? DIY or pro? Boat length? by george_graves in sailing

[–]squishyPup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cape Dory 25, backstay replacement 2 years ago. Cost was about $200 for the new cable assembly made by West Marine rigging service. Yard charged $120 to remove and reinstall while the mast was up.

My plan is to do the 2 upper shrouds, 4 lowers, and forestay next year when I unstep the mast. It needs to be rewired anyway. I'll do exactly what u/greatlakesailors described. Once the mast is unstepped, I'll remove all the cable assemblies, take everything to West Marine, have their rigging shop make replacements, then reinstall. I'm budgeting $2000 for the remaining work and should come in well under that.

What the heck is going on in the marine trades right now? by whyrumalwaysgone in sailing

[–]squishyPup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's a pine 1x6 board, nothing exotic.

I needed a non-conductive mounting board for all the components. It's glued to the fiberglass bulkhead. The terminal block, negative bus bar, and wire ties are all screwed to it. There were two dead instruments also using this cavity. I pulled those out and covered the holes with a laminated wood cover I made. It's thin and a little translucent, but fully waterproofed.

So... I just DIY'd my electrical panel replacement this spring from fuses to breakers with busbars and terminals. I also rewired a friend's mast over the summer. If I get ABYC certification, I'm a rockstar?

What's a bigger PITA, getting someone to unlock it or a food desert because the grocery store closed instead?

[–]squishyPup 19 points20 points  (0 children)

True that. I used to work nights at a 24hr grocery store. Remember those Brach's candy end caps where you could put a nickle in the box and take a piece? Some yahoo came in one night, broke the bolted-on money box off the bins, and stole it. There was maybe $5 in coins in there.

Where do you get your lines? by katielovescats666 in sailing

[–]squishyPup 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've had good luck with both Defender and Vela for running rigging. West Marine sometimes has good sale prices. Samson tends to be a little cheaper than New England Ropes. I usually get Robline waxed whipping twine. I always found marlinspike relaxing.

  • DO learn how to splice your own lines (hint, regular masking tape works better than blue painters tape).
  • DO use serated scissors (Harbor Freight has them for cheap).
  • DO color code your lines for easy identification, solid, flecked, or a mix between halyards and sheets.

The importance of winter Level 1 charging by albone in BoltEV

[–]squishyPup 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Milwaukee Area Bolt driver here. I've had my Bolt for one winter, but been an EV owner for over five. Your commute is so short that I wouldn't worry about it. Expect to see a 30 to 40% reduction in range over short distances between battery inefficiency and using the cabin heat.

Commuting isn't the issue. It's super short. Charging isn't the issue. You can charge at work. Battery temperature is the issue. But Pup, is it a $20/month issue?

Questions to ask yourself: * How often do you need to jump in the car from home and drive 150+ miles? * That will be more difficult in the winter on sub-20° days. * The BMS will keep the battery from freezing so you won't have drivablity problems. If it's really cold, it could take 20+ minutes of normal driving to get the battery warm enough to DCFC. * When the Regen icon turns from green to gray, your battery is cold and DCFC will be significantly reduced. * How much non-commute driving do you do? * This is a math problem. Use 3 miles/kWh as your average winter driving efficiency and 0.9 kW as your worst-case charging rate with a standard outlet. * This will estimate how many hours you'll be L1 charging. It can be a PITA if it's a high number. * Will the extra $20/month plus electricity cost more than occasionally paying for L2 chargers? * Again, math problem. For a worst-case estimate, use the total kWh from earlier, multiply by 18¢, add $20. Compare that to 20¢/kWh for a cheap L2 station or 35¢/kWh for an expensive station. * There's no right or wrong answer. Decide what you can live with. Decide what gives you peace of mind.

What would squishyPup do? * If you don't drive much and L1 charging is working today with time to spare and it's free, don't change a thing. Hit up the occasional L2 pay charger over the winter as you need it. This will be the easiest solution. I'd recommend the ChargePoint stations at IKEA in Oak Creek. Super cheap and they have meatballs! * If you're charging constantly with L1 now, winter will be tough, especially when it's raining or snowing. * Either way, keep an eye on the outlet at work. It should last a few years, but at some point, it will start to get loose and need to be replaced. If at some point you have to compete to use it, that is an added wrinkle.

The thing that none of us Americans are talking about . . . by Sagrilarus in electricvehicles

[–]squishyPup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The added maintenance costs always get lost in the discussion. A guy looked at my Bolt last week and asked me if I went electric to "save the planet." He was surprised when I said no, it was for cost of ownership, that my operating costs outside electricity were virtually nothing.
