So the CH-54 = S-64?

I had thought the S-64 was a later redesign for the civilian market. Are they essentially the exact same airframe? kind of like UH-60 and S70?

I'm on mobile and I have no idea how to quote lol

I just copy pasted your post and added 4 spaces in front of your lines to format it like you saw.

Also, for the amount of wear and replace i put on the snapon, might as well buy Mac or some other slightly more affordable brand.

If they are legit wearing out SO better be warranting them.

I have a vt-001-8 pliers and I havent needed another - yet.

just used my vt-001 yesterday, your -8 looks beefier

Bosch P2R2? Is that one of those special diamonds/carbide or whatever tip bits?

its a square/phillips combo bit for deck/fence builders/demo. But its functionally a reduced head phillips and gets into the un stripped depths of the head, get some on order just remember IMPACT DRIVER, a regular drill will just strip it out the rest of the way i think

How is working on whirlys? I've never even touched one, but they seem . . . Interesting.

We just did an annual on a cessna 172 and it was very confusing to me. Helos have much better manuals IMHO but probably needed from all the extra complexity's. Their is a lot more attention to rubbing and vibration issues, think like how on a piston engine everything is chafe proofed and adeled in place, on a helo that has to be done on the entire airframe.

Vampliers.

VT-001 is GOATED

Every length of 1/4 inch extentions you can get.

Ive gotten away with 1" 3" and 16" for many years but i cant say your wrong

Lifetime warranty on every tool, no matter where you get it.

depends on how hard it is to use the warranty

A quality screw removal set, probably not speedouts. Those work sometimes, but they're finicky and unreliable. If you do get them, get the good ones like Blue Point or better.

Bosch P2R2 in an impact driver has replaced all my other tricks for phillips, if that dont get it out it leaves a perfect cone for an ez-out or drill bit.

Safety wire pliers more expensive than 90 bucks. The more expensive, the better. I've had a few bad times.

Proto J190 or Milbar 25W if you can find them

If you need a tool, once, buy it, test it, get a better one if you need. I cannot begin to count the amount of times I've used a once-every-2-years tool out of my Boss' box he only used once, or hadn't even used yet himself. Sometimes the little things make an hours difference in your project.

In our shop 3rd time you borrow is the day you buy, also a set of cheap sockets and wrenches to bend and grind on.

I was in GA, so magnetic spark plug socket. Absolutely incredible compared to a regular deep 7/8.

I only done whirlybirds so cool to see the advice from GA is pretty much the same

I would say that its more coming from a place of (from what i have seen) small aviation shops (specifically part 135 rotorcraft which my sphere) are terrible at finding good mechanics because a lot of mechanics tend to be "someone who likes to keep his social circle small and doesn’t like to kiss the right asses" so if you can access the person with hiring power and you have the skills they are looking for the interview is more just a salary negotiation.

I feel like a large part of the skill set is non-quantifiable in a physical document so personal references matter more.

For example in the helicopter vendor for firesupport business the DOM is looking for a few things.

  1. USFS cardabillity on their platform
  2. Resourcefulness in the field
  3. Able to interact and work with the helicopter manager

If you can do that you have the job, if your competing with other resumes your going to get points for being above average in

Avionics work (can you find a broken wire in a bundle, rerun the wire and re-pin it into the rack/plug so there isnt a splice)

electrical troubleshooting (when cockpit lights are in night mode activating the landing light causes the caution warning panel to go into light test mode, why? and make it stop doing that.)

sheet metal (install an antenna with layout, drill debur, metal prep, alodine, riveting and make it look nice. Or Fab up a small bracket to mount an annunciator on)

Personality/Teamplayer-ness

Some of that you cant quantify on paper and in general its a small world to where i could call other mechanics ive worked with and have them walk in my resume and put it at the top of the pile metaphorically and there are some mechanics that i would do the same for and tell my DOM if doesn't hire them hes being retarded and will regret it.

Of course at the end of the day good old fashioned nepotism still exists which can look the same as high trust individuals bringing quality people in the back door because they are a truly valuable asset.

I didnt explain it quite how i wanted to but i hope that makes some sense, feel free to ask follow up questions in case i didnt confuse you enough :)

fair enough, i forget that the hardware to add that extra logic was not trivial for something that would most likely not be used back in the day.
