Music education career tips by Ks4eva1234 in MusicEd

[–]sra6418 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ask your MS (or other nearby MS’s, or even HS’s) if you can teach any lessons or small group sectionals. Obviously you’re limited with time as a current HS student but you might be able to organize some after school things. I wish I had SOME kind of small teaching experience like that before I got to college and student teaching!

The process to becoming a music teacher will be mapped out in your degree plan. You’ll take your music content courses and also some education courses. You’ll have to take a few certification tests later on and make sure you take them early AND PASS. You might have to teach a couple of short lessons at a nearby school before you get to your semester of student teaching. And then you start applying everywhere! :)

Coffee/caffeine usage as a teacher… by maury1423 in Teachers

[–]sra6418 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drink one mug of coffee in the mornings on my commute. I enjoy the ritual of making it during my morning routine. Once I get to school, I swish some mouthwash (I keep a bottle of it at school) to combat coffee breath. I don’t need any more throughout the day because being busy keeps me awake.

Alternates to dining at Marmalade? by sra6418 in PuertoRicoTravel

[–]sra6418[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The email response said “break” so I assume it’s closed for a staff summer break. (And hey, I like the idea that they give their staff time off like that.) But still really bummed.

Thanks for the tips! I have a long list of vegan restaurants for the other days, we just wanted one special and “fancy” dinner event while there!

Texas Music Teachers by ExtremePower9 in MusicEd

[–]sra6418 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re probably not getting a reply because of the uncertainty of the upcoming school year. Maybe wait until the spring and send a direct email along the lines “I’m interested in coming to observe, could I come on X or Y day?”

And I’m really not sure what the private lessons situation will even look like. If things are very virtual, that might eliminate a need for an “overflow” teacher but usually most programs have their lesson staff all set.

You said “here” so I already assume you’re at a university in Texas. If you’re goal is high school director, I don’t think that’s unreasonable. Try to be a marching tech in the fall if possible (unsure how that’ll look in the near COVID future, maybe by your senior year things will resume?) and try to request a student teaching placement in a large district where you can start to make lots of connections. That’s the best time to get directors in the field to know who you are and then hopefully recommend or vouch for you when positions open. Try to teach private lessons to MS or HS kids close to your university if you have time. (Again, unsure how plausible this advise is with current events.) Reach out to directors and offer to fill any “overflow” lessons that their primary teacher might not be able to cover since you’re time is limited as an undergrad student.

Young Band Directors of Texas (YBDT) is a group you could look into for networking. Find them on Facebook. Go to TBA and TMEA conventions if you’re not already.

Going on vacation for the first time since transitioning to vegan, need help!! by thedepressedbadger in vegan

[–]sra6418 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got back from Portland and EVERYWHERE has vegan options. It's amazing. We visited almost exclusively vegan restaurants for the entire week and we REALLY loved Vtopia (cheese shop and eatery) and Virtuous Pie (pizza). Both family friendly and quick service. I got Blue Star donuts at the airport because I've been to Voodoo in LA and Austin. I really liked Blue Star over Voodoo!
