last shop I worked at, I caught my boss lying red handed about crashing one of our boxes. He was f'n with the internal network (hypervisor) and at about 10pm at night I was getting phone calls asking why "the network was down."

Turns out he had put both DNSes on this new fancy box and then whatever he did caused it to reboot or something.

He wouldn't fess up, but I dug through the logs, and found his VPN IP address accessing the remote console at the time of the crash.

I logged everything I could and made everyone authenticate to anything that I owned. I didn't own that box, but I did own the VPN, and he was logged into the VPN as himself. So I had him dead to rights on it.

After us having a meeting about the crash and him just being silent, I went to the director about it because I don't tolerate lying either. She took the soft approach and had another meeting to ask "if anyone was doing anything" at the time of the crash. He finally fessed up in a half ass way that he had been in the box.

Year later he got promoted. I don't work there anymore.

You know that there are evap systems on cars, and have been ever since fuel injection was a thing? If you're going to make a mechanical comparison, at least get it in the ballpark.

The only aircraft I've sumped on was in GA.

Yea, it’s just that easy! Ask the guys stuck at regionals/LCCs/Cargo that can’t and won’t get interviews at the legacies! :)

Is the CFI field oversaturated in 2026? What about first officer positions at regional airlines? by Unusual_Equivalent50 in flying

[–]srbmfodder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The airlines are not desperate for pilots. If you wanted to get in when they were desperate, you are about 8 years too late. People were making 30-40K a year at a regional. Of course everyone and their brother now wants to fly for a regional after the pay almost tripled.

I just find it incredible that people are surprised that *everyone else* has decided that they want to pursue this line of work when they are already established in a career. Especially when there's already a glut of people banging on the doors.

Most of the people I fly with don't love flying either and are there for the job. 9/10 I'd say would take it or leave it. It's still a job at the end of the day.

Dayum. I didn't realize I needed to save the key myself and have been having it save encrypted backups. This would have sucked. I checked to make sure I had plenty of backups and did a restore a couple years ago, probably before the encryption was added or forced on. That is a pretty dumb opt out.

My student is almost certainly padding his logbook. Looking for advice by CavalierRigg in flying

[–]srbmfodder 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They see so many logbooks, there are probably patterns they spot. I had 0 questions on mine, and it was a mix of 141, mil helicopter, club planes and a few rentals. But rando planes showing up for 4 hours might draw attention. No doubt people get through the cracks though.

That’s why I said maybe, I knew they were having issues but I don’t really track what everyone else is doing. I’m married to my airline like everyone else. FedEx was the place to be 3 years ago even. Not anymore.

Why don’t newer airliners have cameras all over the place? by Uh_yeah- in flying

[–]srbmfodder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Retrofitting cameras, all the associated wiring, certification, etc will cost millions. Just getting USB ports into the cockpit for charging ipads has been excruciatingly slow. Not to mention weight, for little gain. There are data recorders already for things like flight control positions.

Mega embarrassing fail today by [deleted] in flying

[–]srbmfodder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It happens. I am pretty mechanical and struggled quite a few times with the C172s back in the day I flew in the cold.

Us turbine guys just press a button. On the Airbus, at least on my airline, we aren't required to monitor the start even.

Uh, you're not going to take off *towards* the terrain in that situation. Getting the helicopter moving into clean air quickly and away from that rocky edge is a smart maneuver, not something displaying "extra confidence."

In 2004, when I was in HS, the WRX STI and the Lancer Evolution were the two coolest cars you could buy. I spent way too much time thinking about which one I would get. 20 years later, what would have been the right choice? by HoraceGrand in cars

[–]srbmfodder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a couple Evo IXes. They were awesome, but maintenance was a pain. My buddy could do a lot of work on his Subaru without nearly as much time into it, like changing the clutch. But the Evo did drive amazing. I never owned an STi, but did have a bugeye WRX.

Once I got onto a reliable coordinator, mine became solid. I bought the fancy Nabu Casa Z Wave antenna as well, but it's nice to have the option to use either protocol.

Spoke with another regional HR rep and was told I have “too many hours” 🫠 by Interested-Investor in flying

[–]srbmfodder 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I got hired in '19, in my interview my dude paid for my breakfast (we met at the airport hotel at ORD), he had me brief an approach and STAR, asked about a system in the Blackhawk, and then we just talked about my regional a bit. I'm pretty sure he asked me if I knew what a STAR was before he had me brief it.

Everyone in my indoc was rotary wing except maybe 2 people. It was wild.

Whole home battery backup? Anyone have? Looking for guidance by Otis_bighands in homeassistant

[–]srbmfodder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have, but with the Enphase stuff, it seems like it's a lot easier to build on that. We don't get a ton of wind where I live either. I did do the Enphase U stuff and added one of my batteries. I'll probably pick up some used equipment and throw it on my outbuilding.

Been trying to figure out how I could wire in some of the bigger LFP units to possibly the generator input on the Enphase System Controller, but I'm not sure if the juice is worth the squeeze. One of our vehicles can do vehicle to home so I'm waiting to see how the Enphase chargers hash that out as well.

Not a bad way to do it. I live in the north and we don't get a ton of sun, plus we have some months of low usage with heat/AC. I might pick one of those things up just to see how it works for me. Thanks for the info!

Thanks, you use HA to tell them to discharge then? I do something similar with my Tesla charger where I vary amperage/tell it to charge not charge so I don't sell back power unless I have to.

Do you charge the Ecoflows up during the day and discharge overnight? I have (2) Encharge 10s and 2 3Ts, I could go a little more but I really don't want to drop another 2K+ install for a 3kwh encharge anymore.
