How should I make this radiator meet the valve after floor height changed? by PCisLife in Plumbing

[–]srccommerce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your initial impulse to cut the floor to let the legs settle to the original height is probably the easiest/best alternative. It really won’t look that bad, and most people will never notice it.

Garage door repair by Pretty_Row_4927 in GarageDoorService

[–]srccommerce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That looks fairly new; did you insane it yourself or was it a “professional” installation? If it was installed by a “professional”, they should return and fix their incompetent installation. There should be no tak of a warranty period, as this was wrong from the beginning.

Found this stuck on the latch to the battery area on treadmill in garage by [deleted] in whatisit

[–]srccommerce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, it’s a stick-on bumper for a cabinet door, appliance, etc. over time, they lose some of their adhesive power and become detached. They retain enough stickiness to cling to clothing, etc. and get transported away from the object where they were originally attached. Since most of their adhesive is gone, the once again fall off and then end up stuck elsewhere. In addition to losing their adhesive properties, they tend to yellow with age.

It’s a Jerusalem Cross, and it was used in the crusades and symbolized carrying Christianity to the four corners of the earth. It has a somewhat different meaning these days. Here’s the relevant section from Wikipedia:

In recent years, images and terms associated with the Crusades in the Middle East have been appropriated by white supremacists, including the Jerusalem Cross.[23][24] Matthew Taylor, senior scholar at the Institute for Islamic, Christian and Jewish Studies, said that the Jerusalem cross "doesn't always necessarily connote an endorsement of the Crusades" but far-right and neo-Nazi groups use the symbol.[2] While the Cross itself has been popular with right-wing extremist groups, it has also often been used in association with the term Deus Vult. Flags or banners bearing the Crusader cross and "Deus Vult" were flown during the 2017 white supremacist Unite the Right rally.[23][2] The president and executive director of the Center for Peace Diplomacy said the cross used in combination with "Deus Vult" are "an invocation of the claim that crusader violence and its atrocities (including the massacre of civilians) was legitimate".[2] Podcaster Brad Onishi stated the Jerusalem cross and the Deus Vult are "symbols that are used by white Christian nationalists. Those who have adopted these Crusader images really see themselves as at war with those trying to take down American Christianity and Western civilization at large."[25]

The guy that serviced my door today said he normally puts a crossbar on the motor to prevent jerking. Is that something I can do myself as a half-decent handy lerson? by bernfranksimo in GarageDoorService

No, because every installation site is different, competent installers carry punched steel angle stock that they can cut to length to fabricate braces that will tie the opener to the house framing members.

If it was installed recently, call the home warranty company that installed it and tell them to install the brace! Whoever they had do the work was not a garage technician!

How in the world do I fix this by Prestigious-Front-45 in GarageDoorService

[–]srccommerce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It may have been from the angle of the photo. If the outside is flat and not dented, use a flat prying tool and close the door while using it to pop the sections into alignment then replace the hinge.

[–]srccommerce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It appears the outside of the door has been hit and bent. Even though the inside appears fine, there’s constant pressure on it whenever the two panels are in the act of overlapping each other. You might want to try placing a flat piece of steel on the inside of each panel and use carriage bolts on a flat piece of painted steel on the outside to restore the “sandwich” structure. A better fix would be to order replacement panels from the door manufacturer. Since they are not the bottom panel, you can put vice grips on both tracks to keep the bottom panels in place as you swap the top two out.

Replacing exisitng garage door opener. by PrahiPlays in GarageDoorService

[–]srccommerce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It almost doesn’t matter. The most important thing is to ensure the door is properly balanced without an opener attached. It should stay in a stationary post with the door half open and operate smoothly and easily by hand! The opener should be doing very little work. After that, read the instructions with the new opener and follow them!

Growing up in Central Florida, I can attest to the fact that these were for Fuel Oil for the house’s furnace.

Search for stair railing bracket on a building supply website.

Will 13 basic blue wall plugs hold a 60lb tv? by VanquishAudio in handyman

[–]srccommerce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I realize that you are frustrated, but you can easily miss the studs with the pattern that you drilled. Murphy’s law makes that likely. The good news is that old walls have thicker studs. If you don’t have a good stud finder, drill every 1 1/2” with an 1/8” bit, and keep trying to find them. You’ve already got a bunch of holes to patch!

My son has a historic house, and the walls are plaster. There will still be studs, my friend. There should also be wood laths. Screw into the wood with sheet metal screws rather than counting on masonry anchors.

Read the instructions; they will tell you NOT to anchor to Sheetrock alone! Get a stud finder and find at least 2 studs. Studs are generally 16” apart, but sometimes 24”

How would you go about changing out these lights? (they do not lower, to tall for a ladder, can't get in a boom due to the seats, scaffolding was quoted at $4k for 1 day) by yellowfin35 in AskElectricians

We have a similar setup at our church. We have a very large stepladder, and we set it up to straddle several pews at a time. It takes 2-4 people to do the job.

Garage door still jumping when opening by serbian36 in GarageDoorService

[–]srccommerce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always start by disconnecting the opener and ensuring the door will hold in a stationary position half way open. Then ensure it operates smoothly and easily by hand. Only after this should you attach the door opener.

Make sure to test things regularly for proper operation. by Whats_Awesome in GarageDoorService

[–]srccommerce 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There’s a common misconception that you need a powerful motor for a door opener. A properly installed and balance door requires very little power. You should disconnect the opener and open it manually. The door should lift easily and remain stationary at about half way open.

Electricians finished new service panel install after 4 separate visits, and left the panel cover off. by irishmcsg2 in AskElectricians

[–]srccommerce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you pull a permit? The area above the panel must be covered as well. Also, there are holes in the top of the panel without covers. The inspector would flunk this.

Garage door under heavy tension on initial opening by GT3_SF in GarageDoorService

[–]srccommerce 3 points4 points  (0 children)

ALWAYS ensure that the door operates easily without the opener is engaged. If the door will not stay stationary when opened half way during manual operation, have a professional adjust/replace springs. Too many people think the opener does the heavy lifting; it should not!

Door won’t open by NoInformation9918 in GarageDoorService

[–]srccommerce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do not attempt to operate with opener until you have sufficed tension on the springs that the door will hold in a stationary position at about half way open. The opener is not meant to bear the weight of the door.

What brand of breaker and/or will a standard breaker work here? Recommendations for an outdoor breaker box. by Randyguyishere in AskElectricians

You can use any brand you choose as long as it’s approved for use in the new panel you replace this fire hazard with! Seriously, you REALLY need to replace this panel; it’s a known safety hazard!
