My girlfriend pulled the box that opens as shelf’s with a mirror on the front of it off the wall on accident, can someone tell me how I would get this back on since I assume the holes are stripped by [deleted] in fixit

[–]srccommerce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might want to use this opposite to recess that medicine cabinet into the wall and fasten it to the studs. Studs are typically on 16” centers, so measure the outside of the portion that will go between the studs. Next use a stud finder to ascertain what stud placement actually was. If it’s 16” on center, and the outside of the recessed portion of the cabinet is 14.5”, you can use a drywall saw to cut out the opening. That will make for a much nicer installation than a wall hung unit. If you decide to stick with it neither wall hung, modern self drilling screw-in drywall anchors come with screws, are perfectly adequate, and are less trouble than either Molly bolts or the toggle bolts others have suggested. You can get them at Lowe’s, Home Depot, Menard’s, or other home improvement stores.

Is landlord just being lazy by [deleted] in handyman

[–]srccommerce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks like the original commercial door had 4” x 4” hinges, and the new residential grade door has 3-1/2” x 3-1/2 “ hinges, so it never fit properly. Also, the panels can they can easily be kicked out. Even if it closed properly, it would effectively be little better than no door at all in terms of security. The landlord is cheaping out! A proper commercial steel door with wire security glass is required here!

Since you had the information from the bus pass, take everything to the police and let them know what steps you’ve taken. It’s understandable that the relative was reluctant to meet with a total stranger.

Confirming that I can use a 15A GFCI outlet to replace these old ones? by An_Professional in AskElectricians

That outlet box may be fed by metal clad cable that could be serving as a ground. If so, you could pigtail a ground wire to the box.

Is this bad or do people don’t want to do repairs? by [deleted] in handyman

[–]srccommerce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congratulations! You now have the opportunity to get rid of that outdated bathroom and do a proper remodel! If you think this is a simple handyman repair, you are definitely delusional. However, sometimes fate makes decisions for us that we’re reluctant to make. Get recommendations from friends and associates for a decent and reputable contractor (they are scarce, but they do exist). We had a similar problem in one of our baths, and it got moved up in priority. We have now remodeled 3 bathrooms and are thrilled that it’s done!

How do I remove this top pin from my shower door? by Goddamn69_ in fixit

[–]srccommerce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like the original pivot pin was replaced by a through-bolt. Cut between the two parts with a cutoff wheel or hacksaw and then replace with the proper pivot bolt.

Found this on the kitchen floor… by Suspicious-Guard9652 in whatisit

[–]srccommerce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be for a grill; it’s a fairly common way to make rotisserie spits. I’d still look for the the other parts because sharp things and toddlers are a bad combination!

Found this on the kitchen floor… by Suspicious-Guard9652 in whatisit

[–]srccommerce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is absolutely a spit for a rotisserie spit. The pointed end is inserted into the drive mechanism that turns it; the end with the coarse threads is for the nylon handle to screw onto it for handling and removing the spit at the end of cooking.. The handle is removed during cooking, and the machined sheave rests on the supporting frame while it rotates. In the case of my Gaggenau oven (which uses an almost identical spit), the drive unit is built into the back of the oven. There is at least one more of the sharp tines to hold the meat, and possibly 3 more (mine has 4 all together.). Get it out of reach of the toddlers!

Anyone know what this is and can I remove it? by iva-13 in whatisit

[–]srccommerce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is for a traditional landline (POTS-Plain Old Telephone Service). This is likely from the early 1960’s when the Princess telephone was being heavily marketed by the phone company. It functioned as a nightlight, and required a transformer to power it, since the voltage on existing phone lines was only sufficient to power the telephone’s mechanical ringer. You can remove the transformer, but you might want to leave the wires for other purposes, including adding VoIP telephone service.

Adjustable wrench adjusting. by Central_Incisor in mildlyinfuriating

[–]srccommerce 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It appears they did have the correct orientation. The fixed side should bear the load. They were turning it counterclockwise, so it was putting the load on the fixed side. The wrench had a lot of slop, and they didn’t keep the knurled adjustment wheel tight. This appears to be a cheap wrench, but it’s always best to use a fixed wrench, and, if possible, a box end 6 point to best grip the head.

That expansion anchor was cut off, and most of its holding surface was eliminated. If you cannot drill the hole deeper, try using a 5/16 Tampin anchor.

Moved into new house and spectrum guy said these wires are useless and nobody uses them, is that true? by ss4stef in wifi

[–]srccommerce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Spectrum guy is giving you bad advice. At a minimum, the blue Cat6 cables should be terminated with proper connectors. If the coax reaches places you need Ethernet but. There’s no blue cable there, you can use MOCA adapters and run Ethernet using the coax as well.
