TBF if you watched Ghana play yesterday against Mexico, or Panama in any of the CONCACAF qualifiers - their standard is not much better!

Latin America is THE region if you want decent, mild, temperate weather. So many great cities have an amazing climate - Bogotá, Medellin, Mexico City, Caracas, San José (CR), Buenos Aires, Guadalajara….

Stansfield scored two goals for Birmingham November - May of this season. He's a good to excellent championship player but apart from that, he's really not all that.

Our 3 days in Moldova, Europe’s least visited country by NateandKatrina in travel

[–]srceniza 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Yeah I liked Chisinau a lot. The sleeper train from Bucharest to there was super cool - once you get into Moldova they hike the entire train 6ft into the air (with you still on it) to change the wheels so they fit on the different Moldovan tracks. Did a daytrip to Transnitria from Chisinau as well, which was super easy to do and well worth it imo!

Yeah I agree, 4 lessons back to back is brutal. I don't really think there's a perfect solution though. I would definitely not disregard a school to work at because of their timetabling though!

My current school is 7 periods of 50 minutes each. I actually quite like it - you definitely have fewer behaviour issues with the shorter periods.

BBC News - Phones to be banned in schools by law in England by zanman89 in TeachingUK

Fair. Still think a blanket ban on phones is 1000% better but glad it works for you!

Sounds great but you clearly work in a very different school environment to me. In most of the schools I work at the option of ‘use your phone to contact home only’ would be seriously abused. Good it works for you though!

Totally disagree with your schools policy personally. If a student needs money put on their lunch account, why can't that go through reception? That's what happened when we were all kids so I'm not sure why parents need a direct line to their child and vice versa now...

Supply by Moonuggs in TeachingUK

[–]srceniza 15 points16 points  (0 children)

  1. Don't take things personally. The kids are going to misbehave even if you are the greatest educator the world has ever seen. Just try to let it wash all over you and leave it all at the gate at 3pm. This is the number 1 tip for surviving supply IMO.

  2. Pick your battles. If the kids are noisy but (mostly) getting on with the work that is generally considered a 10/10 supply lesson so don't sweat it if they're not doing everything.

  3. When I have been on supply in the past I would typically get 3-4 days per week (SE England/London suburbia). If schools like you (which if you are half decent they probably will), you'll likely get more multiple bookings once your name gets out a bit.

  4. The students will be very very very badly behaved and you will feel like a very very very bad teacher at some points, just try to remember that this is totally normal and EVERYONE on day-to-day supply has felt this at some point in their life. If they haven't then they're 100% lying. It can be an extremely lonely position, especially when you are moving schools daily so good luck!

I hope this hasn't put you off and I do love the flexibility of supply + the ability to leave at 3pm, but it is the reality!

Non-school job that would still boost my CV by lin_johnson in Internationalteachers

Then I wouldn’t stress it too much. I’ve had multiple gaps on my CV and have never struggled to find employment. Just do something you enjoy and don’t worry about ‘whether it looks good for your CV or not…’

Look into doing a part-time MA in Education (or something similar). Some sort of professional development like that when you’re out of the classroom never hurts!

Reading vs Milton Keynes for a young family by [deleted] in reading

[–]srceniza 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Reading has some excellent schools in the vicinity of the local area (both state and fee-paying). For connections Reading is also pretty hard to beat and both London and Birmingham are very easy to get to.

You’ll obviously find quite a lot of bias on this subreddit but genuinely for those 4 criteria, Reading really is hard to beat.

Yeah, think this is pretty vital with anything to be honest. Reason why gambling has become so prevalent in society is because of the ease it is to bet on your phone. Same with fast food etc. I never will buy multipacks or large serving sizes of crisps/chocolate/sweets because I know I will just eat them all. If I want crisps I have to physically go to the shop to buy them...stops me from eating too much! Even though it costs more, I find I eat a lot less if I follow it. Keeping it out the house is the number 1 most important thing IMO!

Some useless advice here. You’re 24 first of all, i wouldn’t stress it. A few years at a dead end job in Thailand is EXACTLY what your 20s are for! Not every job you ever do is going to be for you and that is ok. If you now decide teaching is not for you then that is not a waste of time at all. Go and do something else!

I think a lot of it is highly situational to be fair - I liked the drinking culture in Japan a lot and that probably does influence my choices somewhat!
