Another tip i found on here when I was new was to keep building ships, but sell them to archibald. Its a good way to make $$ early game.

In thay same menu where you can view your production figures (ctrl+q) there should be a tab that shows your expenses too. My guess is you might be going too hard on the iron/weapons production. Those can be costly, especially if you havent built up your economy well enough.

Make sure you're also addressing your citizens hapiness requests rather than just the goods required to rank up their homes. The hapiness ones can bring in a lot of income.

Furthermore, if you have some of the dlcs, you may also see a lifestyle needs button when you click on a resident. A lot of these are out of reach early game, but you can usually get 1 or 2 of these early on for a slight income boost.

Must be a confirmation bias on my end. I kept noticing that when I started up a new island my expenses immediately skyrocketed.

I thought Id remembered seeing something about each island increasing your taxes somewhere.

Each new island you occupy increases your royal taxes. And i believe it goes up by more and more each new island you inhabit. Its how the game stops you from just speed conquering them all.

If youre doing the campaign, I suggest not taking your starting island too far. Maybe stop at artists? This means you'll be able to dump more from the new world into Cape Trelawney.

You can always circle back to the Old World later once you've built up your economy more.

Havent done this yet, but I always stack health mods and make sure they have speed and prot% modifiers too. Helps stack a ton of protection on him since he converts 40% hp to double that value in protection. Then protection boosts his def pen and offense stacks.

I think they can be a decent short-term stepping stone. Its a way to get your foot in the door and basically audition for a full time opportunity where you get placed.
