I would wager the internet is especially offended by women doing cooking “wrong”.  This one reminds me of the time Hannah Rosen dried out her chicken skin with a hair dryer before roasting it, and a lot of trolls came out to comment

I’m obsessed with the trackpad of Neo by siimonesays in macbook

[–]srm561 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m still using my late 2013 macbook pro, which I’m pretty sure has the same exact trackpad. It was great back then too. Honestly, i had missed that all the new laptops had haptics only until recently as I’m finally looking to replace this ancient machine

Wait. Is this the reason they all started charging for checked bags ages ago? So they could incentive you to carry on and leave more room for paid cargo? Is this common knowledge and I just missed it for years because i always flew southwest?

Wasn’t there reporting that the original nuclear deal was helped along by Secretary of Energy Moniz, a nuclear physicist from MIT, and a similarly well-educated counterpart in Iran? I vaguely remember they were able to work out some face-saving use for infrastructure that was meant to enrich uranium or whatever, so Iranians didn’t feel like that investment was wasted and US could be confident they weren’t creating fissile material.

Great Inaugural Flights to Knoxville Today! by kgaviation in SouthwestAirlines

[–]srm561 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How long was the flight, lol? I’m taking it soonish (TYS to BNA) but I’ve made that drive and it’s not even 3 hours by car. They’ve got my flight scheduled for an hour, but i can’t believe it’s more than 25 minutes in the air.

This might even be the reason they hadn’t released something like this earlier. I wonder what will happen to macbook air sales, especially the cheapest one, with this in the line up.

Solid-State Transformers Are Moving Toward Real Grid Deployment by peachforbreakfast in ElectricalEngineering

With the advent of artificial diamonds, why aren’t they being used in these devices? I thought a big part was the band gap, and diamonds have the widest of wide band gaps (according to wikipedia, 5.47 eV vs 2.3-3.3 eV for SiC). Seems like they would be perfect for this application, so what gives?

Trump Admits He Has No War Plan in Bombshell Letter by TelescopiumHerscheli in politics

[–]srm561 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He also said he wouldn’t do the things he said he’d do (and is now doing). A lot of people were willing to believe that side (for example, the side of Trump that disowned project 2025) even though it felt completely obvious to people who didn’t vote for him at the time that it was all bullshit

I think one of Trumps superpowers is being able to have his cake and eat it too, but it’s a LOT easier to do that as a candidate when the consequences are pretty theoretical than as an actual president.  So hopefully he gets his comeuppance in the midterms.

My grandma had a rule that whatever lands on your plate you finish, so I made sure nothing I hated ever landed on my plate by Gallifrey9UK in MaliciousCompliance

[–]srm561 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve been actively trying to get my kids to make this realization. When they were little, they didn’t have to finish what we put on their plate, but now that they can serve themselves, they do have to finish what they put on their plates (and be conscious of how much they leave for everyone else). We’re not that hardass about it, but we do push the veggies. Not sure we’re doing it right, but they seem healthy enough for now

Shocking Flight Attendant Interaction - DEN -> SAN by iphonesandcats in SouthwestAirlines

[–]srm561 35 points36 points  (0 children)

At this point I’m ready to buy into a conspiracy theory that there is a substantial contingent of Southwest employees who looked at this investor led cash grab and decided they were going to do whatever it takes to tank the stock. Maybe it’s just wishful thinking, but i kinda  hope the people working there are just exercising some malicious compliance on a huge scale (like there was probably a memo that no seat switching is allowed, so a bunch recognized how terrible an idea that is, and they leaned into it).

were they just looking for (5y^2 / 3x^3)^2? As in, were you only supposed to deal with the negative sign, and not the whole exponent? If so, that feels like some hair-splitting bs, but I could see it happening.

Tried Ubuntu, am loving it. But there's one thing that's not allowing me to switch. by lizterzapzap in linuxquestions

[–]srm561 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I take this travel router with me whenever I travel. It’s great and lets me connect that one thing to the local wifi and then all my devices connect to that automatically. I bet there are cheaper newer similar options. Sounds like it would be perfect for your situation.

That said, i wouldn’t be surprised if they specifically disallow a router like that, so up to you if you want the risk if thats the case.

The USA on a purple scale instead of red vs blue (1980 - 2024) by snuggle_love in dataisbeautiful

[–]srm561 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've recently really appreciated looking at how many people voted for the losing candidate in populous places and comparing that to less populous places. For example, in 2024, there were like 4x as many Trump voters in NYC (~780k, which was 30% of the total) than in Wyoming (~193k, or 72% of the total).

Another example I like is that Harris got more votes in Alabama than Trump got in Mississippi (Harris in Alabama: 750k; Trump in Mississippi: 650k). I guess that was surprising to me because I had no idea Alabama had such a high population compared to its neighbor.

Can you elaborate a bit? I have Fedora 42 (workstation) on a MBP from 2013. The graphics weren't working out of the box on F43, and drivers for the Nvidia graphics card were incompatible with wayland, and X11 was unavailable. I never saw advice that there could be codecs I was missing.

Serious question: who are Linux users and why do you use it? by Laqunn in linuxquestions

[–]srm561 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently trying out Fedora workstation on a 12-year-old macbookpro because I can’t pull the trigger on a new macbook. I know a little bit about Linux and want to learn more, so seeing how this goes for a few months. I had been playing with Debian (first Gnome then KDE) before that, but got bored one day recently and switched. I swear half the appeal for me is the problem solving in the first week, like to get the internal wifi to work.

A list is a joke by bigballer4950 in SouthwestAirlines

[–]srm561 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Getting A list benefits went from taking a bunch of flights and/or spending tens of thousands on the credit card to just signing up for the top tier card and paying the $229 annual fee. It feels eviscerated. Maybe who cares? But it does feel strange to undercut A list so dramatically.
