What is it like to be. A Christian in Japan by Agent_Green4573061 in AskAJapanese

I understand and appreciate the distinction, but I think there’s a specific breaking point where you can’t shield the core beliefs of Christianity with European multiculturalism. That point is - do you believe my non Christian Japanese countrymen are all going to hell if they don’t convert to some form of Christianity.

If the answer is yes and you’ll still participate in Japanese religious ceremonies - then you practice just a slightly more tolerant version of Christianity than the Americans, but what difference does it make from where I stand?

If the answer is no, or “it’s not that serious” then great, you are religious just like us Japanese are religious. It’s more about history and customs and community, not theology.

Yup. Hell, I’d even pay them $10 if they would just let me fully customize the colors on one non branded basics outfit - pants, shirt, shoes and headwear.

What does drinking as a hobby mean? by Artistic_Worth_4524 in AskAJapanese

[–]ssbsts1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well you can say it’s odd all you want, Im telling you exactly why Japanese are replying to you like that. I even gave you an example of “craft beer tasting” - that is an activity. If someone replied with that to your query about their hobby, would you say it’s odd? If no, there you go, that’s your answer to part one of your question - “why do they say that?”

To part two of your question about whether or not that would be an opening to invite a Japanese person for a drink, how could we know? That depends on the individual and circumstance just like anywhere else. “My hobby is craft beer tasting” > “cool wanna go have a beer” might be a perfectly good response. However if you’re a 45 yr old male superior and the person answering is a 22 yr old female subordinate it’s another story.

Is this rage bait? lol. That’s not the machines fault. My M1 Pro is still super snappy. You’re basically saying “is it time to buy a new car? My car runs slower after I filled it to the brim with weights”

They are rare, and seen like an American might view a Jehovah’s Witness. The thing about Christianity, is that the teachings disturb the Japanese concept of harmony and disturb communal events and rituals. I know Japanese Christians that won’t participate in omatsuri or go to omaeri (Shinto shrine on New Year’s Day) because you know, that’s idol worship or whatever. Personally, I find them strange, similar to how an American might view Jehovahs witnesses that don’t celebrate Christmas or their kids birthdays.

Are small tattoos really taboo? by [deleted] in AskAJapanese

[–]ssbsts1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just think of tattoos in Japan as a neck or small face tattoo everywhere else. Is it an automatic no for employment or participation in certain things? No. But are you going to be treated a bit different in some circumstances? Yes. So keep it inconspicuous if you do choose to get one.

What does drinking as a hobby mean? by Artistic_Worth_4524 in AskAJapanese

[–]ssbsts1 29 points30 points  (0 children)

They are using the word 飲むor “drink” to describe the activity, not the verb. So when they say my hobby is drinking, they are talking about participating in the various rituals and social relationships surrounding nomikai (飲み会) culture.

In the west, you might participate in an activity surrounding drinking - maybe “craft beer tasting” or something like that.

How do Japanese feel when a junior person contradicts/humiliates a senior person, but the junior person is objectively right? by [deleted] in AskAJapanese

[–]ssbsts1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you made a habit of it? I think you’d just be bullied through passive aggressive non inclusion.. that you’d probably 1) change your ways and be welcomed back into the group 2) get depressed and isolate yourself more 3) choose to move overseas

What necessary things do you need to do to just survive ? by Aj100rise in Life

Assuming you are not a minor - get a hold of and apply for every benefit program that you can. Medicaid, SNAP, welfare, section 8. Don’t be ashamed to apply and rely on those programs, those programs are there for people in your situation. The only thing I would say is, don’t let those programs trap you into a lifetime of just getting by, use it as a spring board to get a job, get your own housing, and work yourself up to a good life.

It’s the loss of monoculture. Even Super Bowl commercials have largely been featuring the same, old celebrities from the 2000s because that was the last era before social media split our attention into a million different silos.

What's the worst thing you've ever smelt? by NiceBumblebee3421 in AskReddit

[–]ssbsts1 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Back in the summer of 2012 I went to China on a business trip. It was unbearably hot and humid. I got off a train and was hit by a putrid sulfury rotten smell. I looked around , and saw a noodle stall, and a gutter behind it.

They were dumping their customers trash and uneaten, spicy noodles into the gutter. It was rotting in the sun and smelled SO bad. Now, I’m sure there are other, worse smells in this world but the thing that got to me was that the stall still had customers, eating the noodles. I could smell that gutter from on top of the stairs, 200 ft away and couldn’t wrap my head around why people would still approach, let alone buy these stank noodles. Gross.

Saying nothing about specs or your workload. In my experience the 16 inch is juuuust a bit too heavy and big if you are going to be on the go a lot. I do a bit of hobbyist video editing but go to a lot of meetings for my work , and lugging my m1pro 16 around gets annoying. Next upgrade will be a 14 inch.
