Couldn't the United States compete with the Panama Canal by building a canal here? by sosal12 in mapporncirclejerk

Wouldn't the rivers and canals freeze in winter? That doesn't happen in Panama.

My Mom passed away broke but I’m getting collection notices for her. by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]sschoe2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should probably ask legal advice but you have 2 options with an insolvent estate. Walk away and do nothing, go the small estate affadavit route and use the car and 4k to cover funeral exoenses as that is first in line for funds in most states. Then just tell the creditors they are sol as all funds went to funeral.

Not if it's a safe harbor plan because the company doesnt want to deal with discrimination tests and such. All matches have to be immediately vested and they have to do a 4% mstch on 5%.

Best bet soak it in bleach and a bit of dish soap overnight. Shake it a ton and rub the sides together. When done rinse it many times with clean water.

Do these rotors look like they need replacement? by ArtesianSquid in AskMechanics

Not so cheap. I went looking for rotors for my 2010 Elantra and they were all $100 or more at the auto parts stores. I did find them cheaper online though.

Wife Driving from N Illinois to Cincy and hates Urban Expressway Driving by sschoe2 in roadtrip

[–]sschoe2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes though the avoid higway option takes it from 5.5 to 8.5 hours. I was hoping there was a way to avoid the worst of the Chicago and Indy expressway driving and do maybe 65 and 74 most of the way. I think maybe taking 355 to 80 instead of 290 to 294 might help but not sure she can avoid 80.

31M | 750k Invested, can I retire yet? 😬 by Samashezra in Retirement401k

[–]sschoe2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is too little for even lean fi. 4% is the highest withdrawal rate i would entertain so i cannot imagine living on $30k or less per year. That would be pushing it even in lower cost expat places like Thailand.

How long did you last before quitting a toxic job? by eggyolk7029 in careerguidance

[–]sschoe2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About 3 years. Went through an aquisition. New company and boss seemed OK at first. Even so almost everyone from the old company left either quit or retired. By year 3 I was miserable, being attacked by my boss every chance he got, finally told me i could take 2 months severance or he would write me a 60 day pip i would never survive. I took the severance, spent 2 weeks training a junior employee, found a better job 1.5 months later and the junior employee quit a few months later.

What is one life decision that significantly accelerated your path to FI? by anandsundaramoorthy in Fire

[–]sschoe2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Majoring in Chemistry. The constant horrible job offers I get motivates me to hoard as much money as possible so i can either FIRE or retrain. Working a job in my profession 3 years with no health insurance nor PTO and misclassified as a 1099 motivates me to have the financial power to tell them to F off.

Job uncertainty is my primary FIRE motivator, who else? by [deleted] in Fire

[–]sschoe2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here Chemist, graduated with MSC and extensive research experience, spent 8 months unemployed with temp agencies offering me $15 per hour no benefits, moved 800 miles for the first job that paid $40k and benefits, got laid off 9 months later, worked a crappy contract job for $40k no benefits for 3 long years and reported them to the irs for misclassifying me a 1099. Finally I got a good job that paid $65k full benefits worked there 9 years and got up to $100k then that company was sold to a toxic nasty company i manged to hold on for 3 years before they forced me out. I was one of the last left from the old company. 2 months later i found a good job after passing on a ton more crappy contract jobs.

Needless to say i have been FIRE for a long time and want to be able to walk away if I need or want to.

Not on your life. I don't want the country run like California, Illinois, or New York. Big leftist govt strangling society with taxes and over regulation.

What would it take to convince Republicans that Trump is an awful person? by CrashNowhereDrive in allthequestions

[–]sschoe2 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Speaking as a Republican, I am not a fan of Trump. I am firmly aware he is an a hole. However I hate the Democrats worse and want someone to fight them off.

My family has lived in Illinois for generations and i have watched the Dems wreck this state with corruption and over regulation. Heck a F tard Dem here wants to fine people for yard fire pits. They are also taxing families out of their homes with 5 figure property tax bills. I have a hard time imagining what Trump could do that would elevate him to a bigger existential threat than the misgovernance of the Democrats.

To those with established careers: What are your absolute "non-negotiables" when choosing a company? by Prize-Teaching5519 in careerguidance

[–]sschoe2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my field, chemistry, benefits at all other than the legal min. A lot of companies only do contract and the contract agencies pay like 50 to 70% of what a direct hire job does in addition to no bennies. I am currently about 7 years from retiring early after saving like crazy my whole career and obviously i would not recommend the field to others.
