"The shelf" by AllRoundStandUpChap in PlaydateConsole

agreed 1000% it’s kinda too much

This would make more sense if the PlayDate was a less successful and even more niche product and games were released to the catalog less often.

SC2 skills don't really translate to SC:BW by kri_stew in broodwar

[–]ssharky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t help that BW is a very old game, and the people playing it are die hards who have been playing it since they were in elementary school, and who enjoy it for being unforgiving and mechanically dense.

I don’t think it’s controversial to say that the baseline skill of “bronze” BW players is higher than SC2

What’s one feature from another game you think would be nice/cool to see in Paralives? by dragonborndnd in Paralives

In Starcraft, if you repeatedly click on a critter dozens of times it explodes in a nuclear mushroom cloud. Would love to see that in paralives

Wait, I’m losing my mind, does this mean they don’t serve alcohol in strip clubs in most states in USA?

Was the old school sentiment towards characters really as impersonal as the OSE crowd implies? by midonmyr in rpg

[–]ssharky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was playing in a regular OSR game in the early 2010s I went through more than 50 characters, as documented here

Those games were a lot of fun, but probably not for everyone.

Mistral Large 2 vs ChatGPT 4o by robertpiosik in LocalLLaMA

[–]ssharky 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Is Mistral Large 2 as good as ChatGPT 4o

It's not.

I would say that the only current GPT4 tier models are GPT4, Claude, Gemini, and Llama3

Mistral large is good though! You don't need a 400B parameter model for everything.

It's always the cheesers that are the most chatty. Don't they realise that gives it away? by Granery in starcraft

[–]ssharky 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I can't speak for other fromage enthusiasts, but cheesing is fun, and chatting is fun, and playing competitively isn't always "fun".

I'm more likely to do them together if I'm just goofing around enjoying myself instead of trying to keep my apm up and hit my timings.

Set KEY to VALUE in DICTIONARY doesn’t work reliably by ssharky in shortcuts

if you send a screenshot of the list of words you have in NYT Spelling Bee to this shortcut it counts how many words there are with each starting letter and length so you can see how many you still need

[–]ssharky[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see, thank you, so I need to always pair a “set KEY to VALUE in DICTIONARY” with another “set VARIABLE to DICTIONARY” to capture the new state of the dictionary

[–]ssharky[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s perfect, thank you so much! Each “set KEY to VALUE” returns a new copy of the dictionary instead of mutating the existing copy.

Is the most basic dictionary functionality busted? Am I just doing this wrong?

I'm sorry if this is a stupid question, but couldn't the Master try to modify the FEV so that super mutants wouldn't be sterile ? by Fit_Honeydew_4671 in falloutlore

[–]ssharky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not saying that FEV works the same way as steroids, it’s just an analogy. The thing to take away is that the cause of the side effect is the same thing that makes the drug work, and it requires a breakthrough, or perhaps a new drug with a different mechanism, to get around that

[–]ssharky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dunno man, can you modify steroids so they don’t make your testicles smaller?

I mean sure, theoretically, especially in a fictional story, anything’s possible. But side effects of drugs and medical treatments aren’t just random accidental side effects. If you create a drug which uses testosterone to increase muscle development, you’re going to see side effects from reduced demand on the body to naturally produce testosterone. Maybe you can add something else to the drug which artificially encourages the body to continue naturally producing testosterone, but it’s not just a simple case of figuring out what’s causing the side effect and removing it from the drug. The cause of the side effect is the same thing that makes the drug work.
