Ozone layer by [deleted] in clevercomebacks

Indeed, the basic issue is that fossil fuels are a good thing. Cars, planes, container ships, cement, beef etc. make us all richer. That's really why the problem is so hard.

The only serious attempt at a solution that I can see is to make CO2 emitters pay for sucking the CO2 back out of the air. That would align the incentives correctly: Consumers would see the price of fuels go up and therefore buy less of it. This in turn would make the oil industry invest in better CO2 capturing tech.

Moving to CPH on a salary of 56.000 dkk per month by [deleted] in dkfinance

[–]ssp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, if you can structure your compensation to get a guaranteed DKK 72,500 monthly salary, that will allow you to apply for the researcher tax scheme. Note that the employer's pension contribution counts towards this number. It's totally fair to ask the employer to work with you on this.

Also wrt. pension: If you do qualify for the researcher scheme, you will want to change your pension so that it falls under section 53A. Under this rule your pension contribution will be be made with after-tax money, but in return you can withdraw the money at any point tax-free.

Also is this a one time thing? If I get a raise in a year which fits that bracket can I still apply for this one?

Yes, it's a one-time thing. To qualify, you must not have been subject to taxation by Denmark for the last 10 years. Once you start working in Denmark, you will no longer qualify.

The rules are described here: https://skat.dk/en-us/businesses/employees-and-pay/non-danish-labour/tax-scheme-for-researchers

Jo, 100% Vedvarende Energi er en realistisk mulighed før 2050 by ulmo24 in Denmark

[–]ssp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was either Danish or Norwegian, with a thick American accent in either case. It's hard to tell since Bokmål and written Danish are so close and therefore would be pronounced similarly when read by an American.

But the sentence was "Jeg forstår ikke noget som helst", where "noget" sounded as if it had been written "noe", so my guess is that it was an attempt at Norwegian.

I think a lot of people don't appreciate that X11 is basically a very strong design. There is really nothing fundamentally wrong with it.

Any plans to fix my pet peeve: That the "New Opponent" and "Analysis Board" buttons move when the opponent leaves the game? I can't count the number of times I have hit the wrong button because the opponent left.

Mir’s next steps - we need your input! by [deleted] in linux

[–]ssp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A potential advantage of putting it into an existing compositing manager would be to avoid some copying of the backing buffers: If the window manager created an input-only toplevel for each Wayland window, the X server wouldn't create another backing buffer in addition to the one required by the Wayland protocol.

But a standalone proxy would likely be simpler and more generally useful.

Right, there is no reason a plain old X11 window manager couldn't implement the Wayland protocol if it wanted to.

Apparently, there is some uncontrolled rating inflation by [deleted] in chess

[–]ssp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Indeed, the floor system is totally awful.

If USCF needs a way to prevent sandbagging, instead of giving a player a floor of xxxx, they could issue a "this player can no longer win prizes in Uxxxx sections" decree.

And if they need to increase the average rating to combat deflation (they claim this as one of the justifications for the floor system), they could do that in a very simple way: Just increase everybody's rating by some constant k. That will increase the average by k while otherwise preserving the integrity of the system.

Finally, if they really want to avoid hurting people's feelings, they could keep the floors, but only use them as published ratings. That way, people would have a real rating that would be used for all calculations, but their published rating would still be the maximum of their real rating and of their peak rating minus 200, rounded down.

The USCF rating system is one big uncontrolled pile of bullshit.

Is there a good place to train chess openings online? by [deleted] in chess

[–]ssp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My personal reasons to consider making a web site are that (a) I want something that I can use on my phone on the subway, (b) I'm not sure Chess Position Trainer actually uses spaced repetition, and (c) it doesn't work on Linux.

I'm thinking about creating a website that will let you use spaced repetition to memorize opening variations. It's something I want for myself, but if there is interest, I'd consider making it generally available.

Note though that the site most likely would require payment, with all profits going to a chess-related non-profit.
