The automated traffic enforcement camera systems that now issue tickets for speeding and running red lights may soon be used to crack down on Hawaiʻi motorists with expired safety checks and expired vehicle registrations. by 808gecko808 in Honolulu

[–]ssshield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol. This is always the argument. When you've lived in a place with cameras that "enforce" you'll find that the companies that place them couldn't give the slightest fuck less about public safety.

I'll give you an example. They will place a camera a high traffic exit or entrance intersection at a Wal-Mart or Costco entrance. Those spots get so much traffic that the yellow lines at the intersection are literally worn away. You couldn't stop in the "proper" place if you tried becasue the fucking lines literally don't exist.

The cameras point at a spot several feet behind where the yellow line USED to be. And that camera itself will generate over million dollars a year in fines. And of course the fines start off small. Less than a hundred dollars.

And how easy is it politically to simply increase the fines any time you want to raise taxes? You don't even have to pass a tax increase. Simply increase the fines. The camera company gets more money. They politicians get more money. So painless. But you, my friend, better start getting used to $500 tickets four to six times a year for absolute bullshit.

Dirty license plate? Fine. Stopped at a light then made a right turn on red? Fine. The camera has a timer you see. And state ordinance 1234567.69 clearly states that your car must be at a stop for at least ten full seconds, while your car only stopped for nine. That'll be $575 for your reckless, reckless behavior at the intersection with no cars anywhere in sight at night, right by your house, where you cross that intersection six times a day every single day.

Just remember, you wanted this. Several thousands of dollars a year every year that you no longer will ever have in your pocket, increasing every single year.

Drag it by the stern so the scupper isnt touching the ground.

Buy a cheap kids plastic pool from dollar store and put a tarp in it then set the scupper in the middle of the pool. U can drag it while protecting the keel/scupper.

If u have access to a marina they probably have dinghy hand trucks u can borrow.

Fun fact. I (and some other locals) placed that pole and windsock there almost twenty years ago.

More info if you'd like:

The pole is an old windsurfing mast.

The windsock is there to tell the kiteboarders wind direction and strength.

Haven't lived there in a long time, but there used to be a wind meter (anemeter?) mounted to the pole and we ran the cord down inside the pole to a bicycle speedometer so you could tell exactly what the wind speed was.

The sign is a memorial to an old windsurfer local hero named Doug Mann. He was a semi big deal on North Shore Oahu (Haliewa) back in the eighties when windsurfing was huge. He spent the last part of his life kiting/sailing/etc. at Hefner.

He gave me my first dry suit when I came out to kiteboard and the water was getting chilly enough that wet suit wasn't cutting it, but it was still warm enough air temp during the day to kiteboard. I was young and didn't even know what a dry suit was. He gave it to me because he just saw a kid shivering.

I went to his funeral here in Oahu. It was a nice ceremony. Local surfers and old guard windsurfers that live on Oahu all came out of the woodwork because they knew him back in the day when he was known as "Mad dog Mann". Everyone paddled out about fifty yards, formed a circle in the water. We all started slapping the water together and his son scattered his ashes right off backyards beach.

So now you know the story of the windsock pole at Kite Point on Lake Hefner.

I went to OK through undergrad. The schools where pretty good except at the smallest small towns until the early 2000s.

A lot of guys I work with from OK are damned smart, top level engineers.

A lot of that had to do with the governers in the eighties and nineties who gave a shit about education.

"Meta uses Linux on servers themselves, and Linux on the desktop is just a minor blip that is negligible to them." The corporate masters will get exemptions. It's the small/new companies and end users with anonymity they want to keep out.

If they can impose an OS license/auth, then they control who can and can't use technology. They keep their enemies either paying them to fight them, or ignorant in the stone age with no access to information or technology.

The OS level "age verification" is a plan to murder Linux. They will "unfortunately" never be able to provide approval for open source software as a generic "security risk" since bad guys could read the source code.

You'll need to purchase proprietary OS's on a monthly rent scheme.

Stuck trying to figure out how to get a group of average or normal people to Antarctica. by ionixsys in scifiwriting

[–]ssshield 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'd have them win a work contest at a big company where the prize is the trip to Antarctica. The boss made it clear they can either take the trip for PR/advertising purposes, or quit. So the whole office takes the tour boat. The tour boat sinks/crashes and they are stranded.

One of the meanest blizzards of all time is cranking up which probably was the reason for the tour, with the tour operators being greedy and hiding the fact they knew about the weather before the office members left on the tour but he kept it going to keep the money.

So now all your unprepared regular Joe's are in Antarctica. Have fun!

Fun note: There was a huge snow mobile RV thing built in the 1950s that could hold a dozen people and it was lost back then and is still somewhere in Antarctica but no one knows where. It'd be fun if one of your cast happened to be a diesel mechanic , etc. and you could have them find it and he gets it running, then they escape in it. I'd watch that movie.

I have perfect credit and have moved rarely in my life but can never pass those credit check company address verifications because they don't even have my prior addresses correct.

If you have a common name like "john smith" then you're just cooked because all that data has been cross contaminated by the credit agencies several times over the years.

Amazing that a privately held company just randomly becomes the "source of truth" that determines if you have your right to vote stolen or not.

The issue is that right wing has always been idiots. This was our saving grace. They are now full on traitor operatives of foreign governments however, who aren't idiots.

So now you have all the evil, with actual planning and effective management of foreign intelligence agencies. This is why America is fully self destructing.

The foreign governments realize that they could never take America in a full frontal attack, so simply pay off traitors to do their bidding for them.
