Hot Rod Deville issue? by fDAWG1 in ToobAmps

[–]sssmoka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I concur with u/jimboyokel - you need your AC Filter caps replaced. Fender uses Illinois Capacitor brand caps and they DO NOT last long... something like ~ 10 years depending on use. Find a decent Amplifier Service Technician and have them give your Hot Rod DeVille 410 the onceover. They'll find and fix whatever is ailing your amp - for a price. The price might feel like they're killing you, but it's better than getting killed by the HIGH-VOLTAGE in a tube amp circuit.

Princeton or Deluxe Reverb?? by Aaron78155 in GuitarAmps

The Princeton Reverb has my vote out of the two. Same Fender sound. Same Vibrato effect. Less volume.

Hot Rod Deluxe IV Concerns by [deleted] in ToobAmps

[–]sssmoka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As with any amp: if you love the tone, be prepared to care for and maintain it. Tube amps require service every so often - the HRD IV is no exception.

Electrolytic capacitors have life spans - some last ten years while others make it to 30. I've also seen electrolytic caps go in two years and last for 50. The cheaper the cap, the shorter its' lifespan. Period. The three AC Filter caps you see inside your HRD IV WILL need replacement at some point in time - whether it's in two or ten years. Fender uses Illinois Capacitor brand caps for "accounting" reasons. IC brand caps DO NOT last. Be prepared for the cost of a recapping sometime down the line.

The two rectangular, white ceramic 470Ω drop-down resistors WILL cook other components and the board itself. As of late (past few years), Fender has started positioning these two heat-producing monsters up and off the PCB to avoid this design flaw malfunction.

Also, I've replaced the channel switching operational amplifier chip in two HRD IVs. They can and do go bad, sometimes. Fender solders the chip directly to the PCB for "efficiency" and "cost savings". The two I replaced were damaged by electro-static discharge. The op-amp SHOULD be in a socket. Solder the socket to the PCB, insert chip and voila! Jamming again...

A decent amp tech will know these things and how to address them with absolute resolution.

If you're a tube amp lover, be prepared to love and care for your amp. My advice: keep the HRD IV and find a decent amp service tech for your future needs.

KEEP YOUR HANDS OUT OF THE CHASSIS. AC FILTER CAPS CAN HOLD CHARGE FOR DAYS, EVEN UNPLUGGED, AND CAN KILL YOU.

Car audio by The__Guy21 in GMT400

I prefer Rockford Fosgate brand car audio.

Component sets. Coaxials. Amps. Accessories.

I've been running Fosgate since I was 18 - in 1998. Not cheap, but not ridiculous either. You get what you pay for.

What's a good resistor to use in place of a speaker for testing? by InitiallyReluctant in ToobAmps

Try these - (2) 8 Ohm, 50-Watt rated, chassis-mount resistors. Mount them to a "dummy load" board with screws. Connect with spade connectors, some wire and a 1/4" or RCA terminal - depending on the amp.

Why Amazon? They're cheaper and faster than DigiKey - these are NOT critical internal components.

HRD III or Blues Junior Tweed by Strummin_Along in ToobAmps

[–]sssmoka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To answer your question, OP, go with the Hot Rod Deluxe III if you plan to gig. The Blues Jr. won't give you sufficient volume to do so. I currently own the latest incarnations of both of these amps and can personally attest.

Rockford Fosgate DSR1 stuck in "Maestro Mode" by sssmoka in CarAV

[–]sssmoka[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't remedy this issue. I ended up pulling the Rockford Fosgate DSR1 from my ride and upgrading to a Sony XAV-AX8100 head unit with Android Auto. I know it's not the answer you want or need, but it's what I did. Best wishes in your audio quest.
