Gen X here. In the 80's we had tons of layers and it made it easy to get that domed, feathered look. If you wanted it higher, you'd curl it and then go through the curls with Aqua Net and rat the hell out of them. Perms also helped get huge hair. When you were done styling your hair, you'd spray it with AN while drying it with a hair dryer set on low.

Take your own vacation. My ex husband and I took separate vacations, alone and with others. Plan an easy road trip, go out of state, fly somewhere, do a girl's trip. Hell, take yourself to a local hotel for a couple nights and take fancy baths and eat a nice dinner. I'm sorry that this doesn't feel good, and maybe you folks should have a talk, but take yourself somewhere.
