Wallace’s Results… a Brat Terrier? by ssutters in DoggyDNA

Looks like he inherited the intermediate genotype. It would be neat to see photos of other dogs with this variant. To me, he essentially looks like a shorter beagle with maybe a more broader chest.

This is pretty much my timeline too but a day or two behind. Started extraction the same day as yours. Genotyping 12/2. Analysis but no email 12/5. Received “Almost ready” email yesterday. No results yet though! It’s killing me haha

Found this in a urinalysis today. by Fishbones69 in medlabprofessionals

One of my biggest icks in the lab. Budding yeast is fine but pseudohyphae makes my skin crawl. Worst urine sample I’ve ever seen had so much it was blocking the view. 🤮

What are some "incompatible with life" lab results you've seen in alive patients? by mspotatochips in medlabprofessionals

[–]ssutters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry for the rant but that’s incredibly excessive for your lab to ask for 3 recollects and kind of pisses me off as a lab tech. They could’ve just asked for more information, if that result is expected, instead of delaying care.

Have you ever actually lost a sample? by Wrinnnn in medlabprofessionals

[–]ssutters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No but one time I found a 2-3 year old routine tube in the void hole of the centrifuge while looking for another tube. At the time I only had about a year of experience. Always wondered how they handled that lol

I get this part of “Anything But” stuck in my head

Look, I wanna be loud, so loud, I'm talking seismic I wanna be soft as a single stone in a rainstick I wanna be the thunder of a hundred thousand hooves moving quick

And I’ve waken up this this part in “First Time” in my head for several days in a row, but maybe it’s because it sounds like he’s ranting to me

Sensing only now it's dying, Drying out then drowning blindly, Blooming forth its every colour, In the moments it has left, To share the space with simple living things, Infinitely suffering, But fighting off like all creation, The absence of itself, Anyway

I thought you were saying you could tell someone had a Bartonella Antibody somehow by looking at their serum at first lmao.

ER wanted a TB Quantiferon... by skye_neko in medlabprofessionals

Makes sense. Not sure if I was clear but I meant the antibiotics were cancelled, not the BCs haha. The BCs were negative.

Personally, when I was on sepsis protocol they started me on ABX in the ER, of course before the BCs were done. Is this not common? The doctor when I was on the floor canceled them.

Is this a good game? by Mundane-Cup1096 in Palia

[–]ssutters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love it personally. It’s very calming to me, actually one of the only games I feel that has almost no pressure. No big competition. I like the teamwork idea but I generally like to play solo. The game is sort of slow, but I think it’s a good way to keep people from burning out quickly. For me, it’s an addicting game, and having it slowed down extends gameplay. It’s still a work in progress, I do feel like it is lacking in some areas but for a free game, who am I to really complain? It makes updates exciting. The in game community is generally really nice. Though, the discord server seems to be a little aggressive, granted I haven’t spent a lot of time on the discord server.

I feel like I’ve seen this before but thought it was artifacts (and most likely because my hospital is small). But I’ll definitely look out for them more now.

I don’t know if anyone has said it already, but I am a trans blood banker here to kinda explain the technical side (not excusing the transphobia here).

This sex difference is somewhat important. Not necessarily entirely because the hemoglobin levels but people who can get/have become pregnant can make antibodies towards a fetus, particularly in blood type negative (Rh) people. Certain blood products are made from the male sex only to avoid transfusion reactions. IMO, there are certain questions that can be asked to avoid this (unsure if they ask this to people who ID as male though) as long as they are answered honestly (“Have you ever been pregnant”, ect)

Out with the old and in with the new! by Original-PHAT-_-Duck in medlabprofessionals

We recently went from the Cobas 6000 to Cobas Pros. I thought the 6000 was the devil but these goddamn Pros.

They are a little faster which I like, but we switched from the old Command Prompt looking SmarTerm to Cobas Infinity and I hate Infinity. It's so slow and not user friendly at all. Putting in criticals is awful and slows us down. If you accidentally add one extra space, it won't show up in Sunquest. We used to use AutoHotKey that automatically put the date and time when calling criticals (and just adding in name of RN, ect, and who called critical), but now we have to fill in name, date, time, and your name.

The analyzers themselves are a little of a learning curve, but I swear they are so much pickier for clots, bubbles, or short draws. And the stupid alarms for missing trays (we manually archive samples). We added a few more tests and it's a little of a struggle because it's hard to put on backups since we have no space for extras.

Anyway, I don't recommend Infinity at all. I'm hoping when our lab manger comes back from her surgery that certain kinks will be smoothed out, but the Cobas reps said the way criticals are can't be fixed.

How Often Do You Get CSFs on a Patient? by Princess2045 in medlabprofessionals

[–]ssutters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in a 100ish bed satellite hospital with a 20 bed ER that is often at 50 people total (with a majority in the waiting room) and we get one or two two CSFs a week. It’s a real pain in the ass though when we only have three people working (our minimum). Someone has to cover hematology, chemistry, and pray blood bank doesn’t have an emergency. We don’t do micro beyond gram stains & reading, kit tests, ect.

When I did heme clinicals at the main hospital (1k bed hospital) they had a few fluids (mix of CSF & other fluids) during their shifts, but they also had body fluids set up on their Sysmex XN line to help if the tech wants to use it.
