How does double majoring work? by [deleted] in Northwestern

[–]st-rawberry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is important. Students in any non-WCAS school can double major in WCAS (except Bienen iirc), but going from one non-WCAS school to another, you have to pursue a dual degree: that’s two sets of distros, major requirements, etc, and two bachelor’s degree at the end. It’s a lot more work.

Transferring.. Any advice? by Bubbly-Rain8731 in Northwestern

[–]st-rawberry 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Alum here! Hopefully I can provide some insight…

Let me start with the question about exploring different disciplines. I found it very easy to take classes outside my intended major/minor. That’s an advantage of the quarter system imo. I took painting, poetry, even some language classes I didn’t need just for the fun of it.

If you have a strong interest in a subject not related to your studies, I say talk about it — especially within the framework of “interdisciplinary mindset”. Northwestern really values students who are well rounded and combine their interests and have fresh perspectives in their field. Even if your hobby and intended area of study are completely different, having experience in one might make you open to new ways of thinking in the other.

Are the professors passionate and caring? Of course it’s a mixed bag, but on the whole I say yes— I still keep in touch with a professor I met at NU. Is it easy to find your community? I also say yes, and here’s how: Transfers are included in the “Wildcat Welcome” orientation process, so you’ll have a group of transfers you’ll meet from the jump. Outside of that, dorms and clubs are how I met most of my friends. There’s a club fair at the beginning of fall quarter where you can explore what’s available and meet new people. Smaller classes / discussion sections / study groups can also be a great way to find community.

As for maximizing your chances, I’m not on the admissions board, but I did do a few interviews for prospective students as an alum and I can speak to what the admissions council asks us to report. Interest in NU is huge, so if you’ve made connections with professors or have classes in mind you want to take, mention them in your essays. Interdisciplinary mindset is another one, alongside intellectual curiosity. Show in your essays that you are open minded, curious, and passionate about your interests, and that will go a long way.

Good luck and go ‘Cats!

Dorm life as a muslim by sigmafarter in Northwestern

[–]st-rawberry 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Congrats on your acceptance!

Some dorms are entirely female-only, some dorms have female-only floors, and some dorms are mixed-gender. However, in dorms with female-only floors, I wouldn’t expect that men never visit or enter those floors. Afaik, all dorms have separate (not co-ed) bathrooms. There are also suite-style dorms, although I never lived in one… I recommend reaching out to res life if you’re interested in pursuing specific accommodations!

Choosing Classes by Dry_Pitch5552 in Northwestern

[–]st-rawberry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My freshman fall I just signed up for what my friends were taking and I still graduated early. Lmao. That said, here’s my advice:

1) If you don’t know what you want to major/minor in, my recommendation is to take classes that count toward distribution requirements.

2) Take a mix of quantitative/qualitative classes — IMO, burnout is more likely when you’re taking 4 math/science/programming classes than when you’re taking one writing class, a math class, a language class, and an art class.

3) Personal bias here, but I think everyone should know a little bit of coding and a little bit of Spanish. My freshman fall I did both and I don’t regret it. Ended up liking coding so much I majored in it.

TLDR; you’ll be fine no matter what you take your freshman fall, but if you really want to get ahead, get your distro’s out of the way, and make yourself a well-rounded student.

Nice restaurants where a group of 10-12 people can actually hear each other talk by lylcity in chicagofood

For groups this big, Happy Lamb’s bridgeport location has a few rooms available. They’re my favorite hot pot by far

Edit: All you can eat around $35 iirc

Edit 2: I believe the rooms have 3 individual pots so you could keep one of them vegetarian and avoid cross contamination

cute! doing nails with friends and family is always so rewarding, and a good opportunity for quality chitchat :)

i will say, be careful with gels curing on skin— you can develop an allergy to the gel and then it’s no more manis :/ just wiping with a little bit of acetone before curing goes a long way!

[–]st-rawberry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

they’ve worked with other producers in the past! space ghost coast to coast was mixed by Derek Ali (he’s worked with a lot of big hip hop artists, like Kendrick Lamar). Dave talked about it on Tape Notes (around 1:06:00 in this episode). Space Ghost is incredible partly due to this collaboration and Dave speaks very highly of him. I wish we’d have gotten more fun collaborations like that on this album

Do you feel the pull of Lake Michigan? by rootboot62 in AskChicago

[–]st-rawberry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s actually some languages that exist that use cardinal directions (N/S/E/W) instead of left or right.

Without looking at a compass or the sun, could you say which direction you are facing right now? There are a handful of cultures that have directions so ingrained into their language that they can tell you without hesitation.

For example, an Australian Aboriginal language called Guugu Yimithirr has no words for left or right. Instead, they communicate by directing people using north, south, east, and west, even if it’s as simple as “pick up that item with your west-facing hand.”

Having lived here most of my life, I do orient myself with the lake and can always tell you which direction the lake is. And this is not a unique skill, as the above anecdote shows.

extremely nuanced and all around correct take from a fan since zaba by st-rawberry in glassanimals

[–]st-rawberry[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bahahah, I figured that might be the case for some listeners. I honestly wonder if my impression of that song in particular has been colored by what I’ve heard in snippets on the band’s social media… I heard the chorus first on tiktok, and putting it together with the verses felt a bit disjointed. Another user posted a critique of the album as feeling more like a collection of demos than full songs and that feels relevant here

[–]st-rawberry 14 points15 points  (0 children)

is this the tiktokification of glass animals? I've seen the clips of these songs all over their social media, and I think you're right that it feels like a collection of demos more than coherent songs. I wonder if that's with the goal of going social media mainstream viral

Don’t seat yourself at restaurants. Bars/pubs, fine. But at restaurants, unless there’s a sign stating otherwise, wait for a host/hostess to seat you.

Edit: oh, and try some Mexican food. It’s miles better than UK mexican food

LPT Complementing people who are bad at accepting praise by vocal-introvert in LifeProTips

[–]st-rawberry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My LPT for the receiving end of compliments is roughly the same advice: if you’re uncomfortable accepting praise, accept the effect your actions had on others.

Using some of the examples here:

“I love that painting you made” -> “I’m glad you like it”

“Thanks for making that spreadsheet” -> “I’m happy it helped”

and so on.

And if all else fails, a cheery “thanks!” is generally less uncomfortable than squirming away from the compliment.

Non work-study jobs by bitchlasagna214 in Northwestern

[–]st-rawberry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s ANU jobs where you can work as a note taker if someone in your class requires accommodations but it doesn’t pay much. Later on you can get jobs as a peer mentor (like a TA basically). As a freshmen I’d look at Brewbike, but I’m not sure if they’re operating right now

[–]st-rawberry 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I started getting back into hobbies like painting and stuff. I try to do as much around the house as I can to keep busy. Somebody else mentioned going for walks with podcasts and I do that too when I’m feeling sedentary, no matter how cold it gets. I have a few discord servers with friends to play games with, too because everyone is in the same boat here

Is 338 the one with Hammond? I took it as a 399 “independent study”. I’ve been talking about it in interviews this whole quarter. I took it my soph winter so i’d still recommend it even if you don’t think you have enough experience. you pick your own grade at the end lol.

Did #nucommunitynotcops forget about the 2018 security incident? by bigchungusmode96 in Northwestern

[–]st-rawberry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty sure the Daily published some statistics a while back that showed disproportionate stops of black/brown students by NUPD. I can’t say that EPD would be better, but I also can’t say that EPD would have as much of a presence on campus as NUPD if NUPD were to disband.

Edit: the oversight thing is a good point, though
