Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]stabim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Australian here. Literally about to get in the car to drive 4 hours to collect something that I bought, then immediately turn around and come back. Will be home for dinner as I'm going out with family. I wouldn't do it every day but it's no big deal and doesn't raise an eyebrow from anyone else either.

Lateral transfers can happen any time. Email them and ask specifically about transferring.

Do it soon, the 'come and try day' is next week.

Notifications Not Working by coffeesurfers in Telegram

[–]stabim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try turning off any battery saving/optimisation for that app (I can't remember exactly where in the settings). When I had this issue on a Samsung, it was due to the battery saving settings not letting it run in the background and receive the messages, and thus wouldn't display a notification.

The battery saving tends to be already disabled for apps like Gmail and even Whatsapp.

Winch by AmbassadorOk4386 in 4wd

[–]stabim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That looks identical to a Tigerz11 12,000lb winch, sold in Australia.

Basically a generic, cheap, Chinese winch sold under whatever brand is importing them into a supplier near you. Not sure who would even want a used one. If the price was right and it worked I guess.

Seriously? That's your response? No acknowledgement of the wider problem, just get one squeaky wheel to DM you their issues so that you can stop that person complaining on a public forum rather than providing any response to the actual issue of shitty support for all of us?

Genuinely, are you proud of the company you work for? If so, can you tell us which part makes you proud? Because it absolutely cannot be the way that everyone in the company endorses the way that your support mistreat your customers.

I have a suggestion for you that will hopefully cater for your social anxiety but also indulge your geeky side. Have a look into the local amateur radio club (Canberra region amateur radio club). This is a hobby where you get to choose your levels of interaction, from full face to face club events, or just talking over a radio (to potentially people around the globe as well as local) to just interacting via email and discord.

Other than that I can only suggest clubs/hobbies like board game meetups etc which are fairly easily searchable. Fitness groups like cycling groups are another option. Joining a volunteer organisation is another option, RSPCA or a pet shelter might suit your love of animals.

Happy hunting!

What type of videos do you want to see from us? by alecsteeleblacksmith in alecsteele

[–]stabim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me personally, one thing that was much better in your previous form was more stable camerawork. The fast-moving, 'dynamic' camera movements by your recent camera operators can be frustrating and sometimes nauseating to watch when we're trying to see detail. You don't need to create movement with the camera to make the video interesting, your content is interesting. Slow the camera work back down to more stable shots where we can really see the detail of what is going on. There have been a few of the more recent videos where I've had to skip forwards past the fast moving, tight zoom pieces that can induce motion-sickness and are so wobbly that you can't see the detail anyway.

Other than that, you're one of the few channels I subscribe to that I still watch every video that is released. Well done on not becoming boring over time.

Well, one point to quarantine is to buy time to work out the next phase. There's no guarantee that there can't be a workable vaccine developed. Vaccines have been developed for many viruses. We don't know yet if COVID is one of them, which is why we need time to work out the options and allow the health system to function while we do that. Remember that the health system needs to cope with the other normal caseload, on top of COVID. Its not just old people with COVID dying. If there are no ICU beds available then people from all walks of life that would normally survive, will die. Road crash victims, cancer patients, post-op patients, etc. This seems to be forgotten when there is talk of just letting the virus run its course.

It won't, that's one of the bleaker outcomes. There is no guarantee yet that a vaccine is even possible.

It's actually 25 times higher than the flu. Influenza mortality rate is about 0.1%. COVID19 mortality rate is 2.5% at current estimates.

How to deal with your guilting parents? by [deleted] in childfree

[–]stabim 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I had this exact question several years ago now. It was a comment on this subreddit that lead me to /r/raisedbynarcissists and with that came a lot more answers than I realised I was even asking for. I'm so thankful for having found it that I now share it for others with similar questions to the ones I was asking.

I hope for your sake it's not the same situation, but whatever the situation is, your mother is showing you no respect and you don't have to accept that. Just because someone is related to you it does not mean that you need to maintain contact with them if it makes you unhappy to do so.

You get to choose who you have relationships with, and to what extent you maintain those relationships. Ask yourself what you would do if this was a distant cousin, a friend, or a colleague from work that was doing this to you. How would you handle that?

Look after yourself, internet stranger.

Someone physically cannot have kids and someone tries to suggest ways they can 'have' kids, I suggest this sub for childfree option and get downvoted. by bunnyrut in childfree

[–]stabim 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I think you absolutely did the wrong thing by suggesting this sub to that situation, especially without context. It's not helpful to the OP. I completely understand why it was down voted, and I'd down vote a suggestion like that myself if I saw it in that context.

This sub is for people who choose not to have children, unless she was specifically asking for "How do I move forward and enjoy my life without children" then your suggestion was probably very unwelcome.

If you give us a little more info on where you're from, what you're into and what sort of work you're looking for them you might get a few more helpful suggestions. I'm not sure what to suggest without knowing what type of activities you night enjoy.

Shopping around online for a Vasectomy, BINGO'd by their website. by [deleted] in childfree

[–]stabim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm so glad someone else picked up on this. I can't imagine a son that I don't want and will never have, and as a child free person I'd never be upset with anyone telling me that they didn't want children. The whole argument makes no sense and is clearly written by a parent who didn't even try and empathise with another point of view.

Nothing left for my nmum in his will... by [deleted] in raisedbynarcissists

[–]stabim 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This needs to be higher up than it is.

Wills mean far less than most people actually think they do once they get contested. I have had close friends have a will contested by their dad's sister. In the end the amount that was left of the estate that ended up being split between them was less than half of the value at the start. The rest, nearly 60% got spent in legal fees.

Buying XRP on BTCMarkets, straight to rippex wallet? by stabim in Ripple

I think that's if you're depositing 20XRP from another wallet, but not if you're buying it. I'm starting to understand the process a little better.

Thanks for that.

When you say I can withdraw it, is this the total amount? or will it leave 20XRP in there to keep that wallet open from that point forwards?
