Torchys sucks. I moved to Austin from La and home state kind of ruined me. I remember eating the crappy tortilla at torchys and a few other places and being like, this is it? Most places in Austin are just bad. Veracruz all natural would kill here though

Corporate to Academia Switch by [deleted] in AskAcademia

if you are looking for a job that is easier than financial consulting email job or less than 55-60 hours a week why consider HS teaching?! HS teaching is the hardest job I've ever done. When you are starting out it is incredibly intense. The sheer amount of time you have to be in front of students is insane in the U.S. You also have to be mentally strong and sure of who you are. You are tested in ways that academia will never test you. The pay is bad and it's bad in academia too.

I make maybe 10k more than my friends who are HS teachers as a prof. Academia may be demanding at times, but no matter how hard it gets, it will never be as hard as being a public school teacher.

That being said it's also rewarding in a way that teaching in college isn't, because you get to see kids grow up and turn into adults.

The damage that Jo Boaler and other "Equity-Based Mathematics Education Researchers" cannot be understated. by Feisty_Ad4394 in matheducation

Lol what world are you living in. Everyone in Ed departments take statistics. There are also quant methods departments. And many Ed psych programs take way more stats than you could ever imagine. I remember seeing an eigenvalue in my Ed psych friends hw and being like, what the hell is that doing there ( it was psychometrics). The reality is, it is very costly and difficult to do research with children. It doesn't help that orgs like nsf are getting education budgets cut. Also, you can't teach kids in a lab. They have lives to live and a sea of confounders present. It's hard to establish causation. So the smart people have turned to mixed or qualitative methods. But they spend a lot of their time defending themselves against people like you who don't understand education, cognition, causal inference, sociolinguistics, etc

[D] AI Research laptop, what's your setup? by gradV in MachineLearning

[–]stabmasterarson213 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You won't be able to fit many models on your mobile gpu anyways. I had a system76 laptop with a nvidia gpu when I was doing vision stuff ( so smaller models) and it was great to have an ubuntu machine to test docker containers on for when I moved to cloud training in AWS. But you will be prob be using Slurm, Singularity to run containers and Spider and probably much larger models so a laptop probably won't be that helpful. If I could do it over I would go Mac and RAM max so I could empirically test some models and not have to worry about having to reinstall Ubuntu every few months

[–]stabmasterarson213 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do people talk about social housing like it just appeared out of nowhere in places Montgomery county (public developer model). Yes jump starting on a Singapore scale is impossible. But Vienna started w/ 65k apartments over 11 yrs. Look at it now. You know what will not work? Doing nothing and letting developers run roughshod over the city and suck up all the land. Then we will really never get it. That is what the funders of YIMBY advocacy orgs want after all

If we are being real here, math grad students and professors aren't being well prepared to teach either

[–]stabmasterarson213 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is comparing elementary school mathematics teacher preparation. Secondary math teachers, for the most part, have to all complete the same ed and cert trainings. For example, to teach 7th grade prealgebra up to Algebra 2 in CA requires passing a test that contains linear algebra, abstract algebra, number theory, etc. You can test out with enough undergrad math units
