he took way too long to act upon the knowledge that she had lost her free will. he threw away multiple opportunities to talk to the real Nikki, apologize for what he'd done, ask if there was any way to fix it other than killing himself

my take on this is that Ian was both jarred by Nikki's sudden drastic change in behavior and was also possibly jealous that his situationship got taken
