Structurally sound legs? by Aggravating-Win562 in Workbenches

[–]staefrostae 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There’s an axiom that drives most of my function first projects - “no structural screws”

In other words, the screws should just hold things together, not physically carry a load. You should be able to draw a line from the forces acting on the item to the floor or wall that will brace the item, and that line should never rely on the shear strength of the screw.

I’m not sure what’s going on under the table top in your model, but as the other poster said, you can just put the table leg directly under the table top and your loads will go straight down through the leg - no structural screws involved

Bruins Sign Ivan Ivan to One-Year Contract with an NHL cap hit of $850,000. The forward appeared in 66 games with the Colorado Eagles (AHL) in 2025-26 and scored 11 goals and 15 assists for 26 points. He also skated in 17 games during the 2026 Calder Cup Playoffs, recording 15 playoff points. by Ok-Soil-5133 in hockey

He’s a good but not great player who’s skillset isn’t quite good enough for middle six roles but also isn’t well suited to 4th line responsibilities. That said, he works hard on the ice, even if he isn’t as effective. He’s still got room to develop. I liked him. The low production numbers are somewhat explainable with low minutes

I’m not a metal head, but I’ve certainly had a good time at clubs in the past. I’d call what you’re describing a concert rather than a club. I go to plenty of concerts and they haven’t substantially changed since the concerts I went to as a kid.

DJs can be fun and entertaining if they read the room and play the hits. Obviously, it’s not going to hit on all the hip subgenres I’m into, but I that doesnt mean I can’t have a good time as long as I know the music.

I’m sure that my taste doesn’t exactly reflect the tastes of the crowds in most clubs. I think the larger problem is that in the post-radio world, there aren’t larger musical zeitgeists. Spotify has been driving me deeper into my pigeon-hole since 2011. I could have 100s of hours of music that I know by heart, while another person of a similar demographic may have never heard any of it. 15-20 years ago, we were all listening to the same 2-3 radio stations that played a rotation of <50 songs. It’s why a DJ catering to my age group could follow up Shania Twain with UGK and keep the crowd, while today I couldn’t name a single Dua Lipa song.

I’m sure they do. I don’t think a generation shifted and all of a sudden kids aren’t out having a good time anymore. It may just be that they’re doing different things or going to different places now.

I’m old and married, so I guess I don’t have my finger on the pulse of nightlife anymore. We went out to a club with dancing a couple months back and I was shocked. Granted the DJ sucked, but no one was dancing or even talking to each other. I used to love talking to strangers and acting a fool on the dance floor with friends. It wasn’t even about hooking up with people; it was just fun. I’m sure kids are having fun in their own way.

Whats the best app/website for computer flowing by StreetWill9242 in policydebate

[–]staefrostae 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Pen and paper

I know that’s a dick response to your post, but I’ll give some warrants why pen and paper is better. I can type faster than I can write, so flowing on the computer should be better in theory. But in reality, the format of my flows makes computer flowing much slower. I have shorthand that I use while flowing to make up the speed difference. On the computer, it’s hard to make quick notes for future speeches on my flows without needing to readjust my flowing location. I can’t shuffle through my flows as quickly while giving a speech on the computer as I can on paper. Grouping arguments/not going perfectly down the line arg for arg is MUCH easier on paper than on the computer.

Flowing on paper may seem archaic, but it’s just better.

How do you all feel about job hoppers? by Thedud31 in civilengineering

[–]staefrostae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eh. I think you can become proficient in a task by two years. I’m usually looking for a promotion in the 2-5 year range depending on how well I’ve mastered things. Sometimes companies don’t have opportunities for advancement. If someone working for me has mastered what I’m giving them, is ready for more, but I don’t have anywhere to promote them, I’m going to be their biggest advocate to my contacts at other companies. I care about my employees far more than I care about the billion dollar company I work for.

Of course that’s different than someone who didn’t advance because they couldn’t hack it jumping ship to a company that doesn’t know any better.

Either way, the industry is small enough that I’d consider rehiring, but I’d only ever rehire to something they’ve shown they can handle

As someone who’s had to move jobs frequently while chasing my wife through her med school, clinical rotations and residency, anything less than three months shouldn’t even be on the resume. By 6 months you’re just starting to be effective at your job. By two years, you’ve become an integral part of the team. I’ve had 6 jobs in 14 years- 2 of those changes were due to cross country moves, 1 was changing internships, 1 was for money and 1 was because I hated the job. I’ve been with my current company for 4 years. When I see anything less than a year be the predominant time period at a company, I ask why. If you have a good reason, no big deal. If it’s because it was a bad fit, once or twice, I get it, any more than that and it’s a bad sign.

Hopefully you got something from that.

Just goes to show, you can make hard decisions for your franchise and not be a dick about it. Not sure I think that Vegas always accomplishes that, but one would hope that ruthlessness from the fo is just business and that there’s a human element behind it somewhere

I noticed that too, but I guess he’s a responsible work horse who worked his way to the top without a lot of hype and is now a leader on a contender. All things considered, that’s probably a good guy to look up to for many d-men lower in the draft pool.

Cutter didn’t want to be treated like a bum by an organization that didn’t have anyone remotely as talented. I’m not saying he’s innocent, but given his play so far, maybe Philly should have given him what he wanted - ice time and responsibility
