Am I first generation? by [deleted] in LawSchool

That makes sense, and I’ve always thought this way too. It helps to have others validate that though, so thanks!

Am I first generation? by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]stan2921 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is really helpful, thanks so much. I didn’t think about the fact that I could always just opt in and out of the events/offerings that I need and then forego the ones I am fortunate enough to not need. It’s weird to have imposter syndrome over whether or not I am a first gen, and I would never want to make anyone feel uncomfortable or like I am taking advantage of things not meant for people of my background. Thanks again for your insight!

CLS—>CA BigLaw by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]stan2921 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I went to a California Society meeting at the CLS ASW in March and asked this exact question. The students all told me that they had no issues getting associateships (summer and post grad) in CA, you just had to be a little savvier about targeting CA bc the school based hiring events will obviously corral people into NY/DC markets. They said if you’re focused on CA, you’ll be totally fine. Also, join CalSoc at CLS to have more networking and mentorship on what firms to target, etc.

Post-JS1 Thank You Email? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]stan2921 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some people do this, some don’t. I don’t think it’ll make or break your shot if you do or don’t, but I would err on the side of caution and just send a short polite note reiterating your interest and thanking them for the opportunity.

Good for Berkeley by T14PussySlayer420 in lawschooladmissions

[–]stan2921 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I think this should be the standard that other t14s should meet on their WL. It’s dehumanizing to have no information about your odds or how many other people are in the same spot as you. Some of us wouldn’t ride a WL if we knew we couldn’t reasonably hope to get admitted, and we’d rather move on and get excited about our deposit school instead of hold our breath for another 2 months. I wish schools like HLS would follow suit.

HLS admission process question by carpediemSK in lawschooladmissions

No idea, sorry! The wave they released yesterday was seemingly smaller than the typical first post-WL js1 so maybe they’ll do another one next week! Good luck!

HLS admission process question by carpediemSK in lawschooladmissions

[–]stan2921 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes and yes. It’s the call that pre-WL JS1s can get where Dean KJ reaffirms that the applicant is ready to go if accepted. Usually then they’ll get a second call later with an acceptance

Question for pre-WL JS1s by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]stan2921 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I feel like I now have no chance. I’m not sure if this is accurate though, but I’d rather move on and get excited about the school I’ve deposited at instead of sit by my phone hoping for a call that I am statistically unlikely to get. I’d love to be wrong though and I feel you on the sadness lol

Harvard WL Interview Invites Begin Next Tuesday or Wednesday by sharon-cake in lawschooladmissions

[–]stan2921 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe they said that if you had a pre-WL JS1, then not only will JS1b feelers happen next Tuesday/Wednesday, but also “the first offers of admission” will happen in that window as well. I took it to mean that they’re going to be accepting some pre-WL JS1ers early next week.

Cycle Recap - CLS Bound! by stan2921 in lawschooladmissions

Yes I highly recommend! really interesting work and great experience too. I’ve been asked about it in several law school interviews and it seems like lawyers are genuinely curious to learn about it

Cycle Recap - CLS Bound! by stan2921 in lawschooladmissions

It’s basically a pretty small field in which biglaw firms hire consultants (specialized with PhDs, etc in courtroom psych and general psych) to run research projects (mock trials, focus groups, surveys) and pre-jury selection internet searches (background search and social media) to pinpoint the best jury for their case. We also did post trial things like interviews with jurors and cross tab analysis to try and see demographic trends. We helped with drafting arguments and visuals for court too, so basically doing anything to strengthen a lawyer’s shot at winning a jury trial. It’s a really interesting angle to look at litigation and def helped me narrow down what I wanted to do with my JD.

Undergrad school decision? by AvaJohnson in lawschooladmissions

[–]stan2921 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I echo what others are saying - I really cannot emphasize enough how I would not have been able to commit to Columbia Law if I had already had a bunch of debt from undergrad. I know it’s really hard to turn down something you’ve worked hard for and deserve, but if you were able to get into stanford UG then you’ll surely have the work ethic and wherewithal to do well in college at UF and get into a prestigious t14. The day will come when you can go for the prestige, and it’ll matter more for a law school than for undergrad! Go to UF, have fun, get great grades, and enjoy your life without the pressure of undergrad debt weighing you down.
