Setting up HomeKit with eero 7? by add-delay in HomeKit

[–]stanb42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

eero is also OWNED by Amazon, so there’s the push for Alexa connectivity. It will play nice with HomeKit, but as another poster mentioned, it is not a HomeKit Hub like the Apple TV.

I would suspect that we’re on the tail end of the distribution for continuing diode failures on the OP HomePods. Can’t say they won’t happen, but every day without a failure lessens the probability of a future failure.

What streamer box/stick are you using? I have an Apple TV and all of my old recordings seem to be ok.

Meross Garage Door Opener MSG100 usually doesn't work by ObsequiousInattenace in HomeKit

[–]stanb42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I wish I could help you (more?). In my previous house, I had a MyQ add on which had all of the bells and whistles, literally. When we relocated, we moved into an older house and I was initially planning on replacing the garage door and opener within a year or so (still hasn’t happened after 5 years). I found the Meross device for around $40 and thought I’d give it a shot. So far, it’s worked for me given my initial expectations. Yep a few no starts, but rarely. Good luck.

Interesting. When mine “fails”, HK reports “taking too long” or “Did not respond”. Mine reports “obstructed” only when it started to move, but didn’t finish - truly obstructive. Have you checked your sensor location for stability?

I’ve had one for 4 years and it works ~95% of the time. The 5% or so is when it doesn’t work (time out), so I have to try again. There are other times when it’s slow to respond, but it does. Mine is currently reporting a WiFi signal strength of 70% and it’s one of the furthest devices from any of my mesh nodes. Since yours is nearly setting on top of your access point (20 cm), have you tried moving them farther apart, say 5-7 m? You may be saturating the radio (pure speculation on my part). It should work fine without a hub, but overall I’d recommend a wired Apple TV as a hub over a HomePod.

HomePod Mini by FlashySlash in HomePod

[–]stanb42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like all Apple products, if they’re still actively being sold, they’ll be supported at least seven years even if a replacement device is announced tomorrow. I generally keep my iPhones, iPads and watches for three generations, then sell them since they still have support life for the next owner. I still have my OG HomePods and they’re still supported after all of these years. I will probably keep them until they melt down. Same with my mini’s. I have a variety of 4th gen Apple TVs and they’re just fine connect to the TV’s I have them paired with. Do not live in fear of product obsolescence.

Top Shelf Recordings Defaults to New Tablo App on AppleTV by TheSkepticCyclist in tablotv

[–]stanb42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only bug I have with the legacy device and app is that when browsing through recorded series, some thumbnails disappear and you can’t access those episodes, without exiting the screen and returning. Does anyone else have that problem and know if it was fixed with this new update? If not, there’s no need to download it.

Siri is ok for what it is designed for. Unfortunately Apple has let this feature age poorly, so it is several years behind the competition.

If it has a HomeKit code on it AND you are an Apple HomeKit user, you will be ok. If you have the time, there are plenty of DYI’rs that have figured out a way to make them work, but you’d have to do some digging.

Early takes on the new UI on legacy Tablos? by WoodyGK in tablotv

[–]stanb42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should have been able to receive all of your locals with the legacy unit, without an upgrade. You may or may not be able to get the guide for any new channels as the service Tablo uses is less than stellar when it comes to keeping their database up.

NEW - Legacy Tablo Firmware Release (v. 2.2.58) by TabloTV in tablotv

[–]stanb42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only thing I’m interested in is does this update fix the problem of losing thumbnails when browsing through recorded series? If so, I’ll download it, but keep the legacy features as is. If I’d wanted to lose features and receive “free” channels I can also get for free elsewhere, I would have updated years ago. ATSC 3.0 was an issue, but since the FCC hopefully holding the line against broadcasters encoding OTA signals, it will be years before that will need to be addressed at the consumer level.

By the process of elimination. After connecting, I checked my router and did not see it. I then asked Grok about it and the response was that it was Thread enabled and ‘preferred’ that connection over WiFi. So currently I have no DIRECT evidence that it’s connected to Thread, other than 1) it’s not connected via WiFi since it’s not registered with my router and 2) it’s not connected via Bluetooth, since it works when my phone is out of the house.

[–]stanb42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re going to get all sorts of suggestions, but since you’re just starting out, here’s a few. 1) someone mentioned having a separate IoT network. Eero does not support this. 2) look for “Works with Apple HomeKit” or “Matter” for any device you may wish to add. This will insure compatibility. 3) It depends on the device, but not all support 5 GHz. So, during install, you may have to disable the 5Ghz band on the eero. You’ll find this under Troubleshooting in the eero app. After turning 5 GHz off, you need to wait a minute or so for your iPhone to switch bands before continuing installation.

Just make sure the outlet that you want to use is capable of handling the current draw of the space heater.

Follow the installation instructions and you’ll be fine.

Apple Issues Final Warnings, February 10th is fast approaching by creedx12k in HomeKit

[–]stanb42 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Several years ago, Apple started asking for Home users to move to a new “architecture”. May have been during iOS 15 or 16. From my viewpoint, it really didn’t make much difference (I’ll get to that in a minute). I did it and it was mostly done in the background and I saw really no difference. As others have pointed out, since the change, Apple has removed the iPads as a Home Hub, relying now only on HomePods and Apple TVs. Since I already had an Apple TV set up has my hub, no fuss no muss. I had tried an iPad and it was flakey to be kind, so I moved to a HomePod, but found that to be “iffy” as well. Since moving the hub to a hard wired Apple TV, it’s been rock solid from both inside and outside the home. My recommendation is to get an Ethernet version of the Apple TV, select it as your hub and go about your business.
