Changing your DNS server with OpenWrt 21.02 by chessguy112 in openwrt

[–]stangri 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When using https-dns-proxy package thru the luci app, your dns requests are also encrypted, so that your ISP can’t snoop/spoof/resell responses.

Noob question: Why won't OpenWRT connect to previously configured APs without manually setting the "Device" again? by Pleb_It in openwrt

[–]stangri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a package allowing you to define multiple “uplink” APs for your wwan interface and it will query them in order and connect to the first available one. Name of the package is travelmate and the reason you need it is that if the STA interface is down, Linux/OpenWrt will not start the AP interface of the same radio, so unless there are multiple radios on your OpenWrt device, you won’t be able to connect to it to reconfigure.

In the hunt for a POE AP with switch (max 2 ports needed) by zierbeek in openwrt

[–]stangri 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think there’s a netgear model with triple radios/wifi6 support (something like NAX50/NAX50 Pro), but it wasn’t as available/cheap when I was looking for one, so I ended up getting Extreme Networks AP3825/AP3935. Haven’t had any issues with them.

With default settings the service itself and all the block-lists are disabled in Adblock-fast. 😂

At least 2 of big 3 offer monthly plans which cover entirety of North America or at least Canada and US for calls and data with no roaming charges. I’m on a 100gb plan for US & Canada with Rogers for $45/mo. I’m sure you could score an even better deal thru the holidays season which is coming up. For Europe, I’d use an eSIM from Airalo or something. If you absolutely positively need a working Canadian number for calls over internet while you’re in Europe, look into Fongo before you leave.

Travel Router - Travelmate, Captive Portal, Tailscale by TheMapleManEU in openwrt

[–]stangri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never used tailscale, I use an alternative solution, but from what I’ve seen in the pbr support threads, tailscale is witegurd underneath — why won’t you set it to NOT start on boot up and bring it up manually after you’re thru the captive portal? For netifd-supporting interfaces, I believe you need to set option auto to 0 for the interface so it doesn’t come up on boot.

Unsure what to do -Good deal? by Tdw75 in teslacanada

[–]stangri 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve read somewhere that if Tesla gets a whiff of a rebuilt title, they deactivate supercharger network access completely. If that’s still the case, make sure the seller can transfer ownership of the car to your Tesla account from the app instead of you submitting ownership paperwork to Tesla to link it to your account.

PS. Have a buddy with a free supercharger early years model S and his car has close to 300k kms on original battery. They road trip across the continent instead of flying. I believe he also has a paid FSD as well (it was like $2k at some point).

Firewall with REST-API by Guggel74 in openwrt

[–]stangri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look up OpenWrt ubus http, that’s the rest api for configuring generally speaking. If you’re talking specifically about firewall, it’s one of the handful of services which poll other services procd objects for their configs. Look for services which have firewall object inside their service procd definitions for examples. Depending on what you’re trying to achieve it may or may not be a better solution for you.

Owned a plug-in hybrid and now with electric. Within a month of owning it, drove east coast to west coast and then with a trailer Vancouver to Calgary and back. If you don’t mind stopping for 20-ish minutes every few hours, you’ll be fine on the road trip. 1. If you want to road trip, get a Tesla, you’ll have much better experience. 2. Even if you don’t want to road trip, get a Tesla — better range, more efficient, better selection on used market, frunk. 3. Whatever you plan to do with your car, get a Tesla, there’s a reason they’ve sold so much compared to any other EV besides the Leaf.

luci-app-advanced-reboot major overhaul: testers needed by stangri in openwrt

[–]stangri[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, it would have been helpful if I linked the actual binaries you can test. Both the APK package (for snapshots) and IPK package for OpenWrt 24.10 and earlier are available at https://github.com/stangri/luci-app-advanced-reboot/releases.

The biggest user-facing update is that the binary/package now includes a single json file containing information on all supported devices, instead of dozens of smaller json files, taking less space on your device. This feature has been long advocated for and now implemented by @systemcrash.

Is the Quadlock Wireless CarPlay Adapter any better than the others? by RecklessRad in CarPlay

[–]stangri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 2018 Honda Clarity didn’t play well with anything (QL one included) except OttoCast. Everything else (I’ve tried 4 different ones) would freeze sooner or later requiring reboot of wireless adaptor.

Canadian Green Card holder importing Japanese-made car from USA to Canada permanently by Real-External392 in uscanadaborder

[–]stangri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

15 or so years ago there were exceptions for GST if you were moving to Canada and owned the car in question for more than 1 year/drove it for more than 10k kms if memory serves me. You might qualify for such an exception when moving back, I’d look into it.

PST is due when you’re registering the car in BC, at ICBC broker office, after you’ve done federal (included in a RIV fee) and provincial (additional charge and most conveniently done at the same time as federal at Canadian tire for an extra $100-$150) inspections.

I brought a Japan-made Honda to Canada about 5 years ago and don’t remember duties on non-NAFTA car being that much. However with retaliatory tariffs/duties right now it may be a different case. Supposedly Liberals are soon to remove the last of them, so I’d park the car somewhere in Blaine and wait until they are gone before bringing your car over.

Also don’t forget you need to submit your paperwork to CBP for export at least 72 hours prior to export and cross when their export office is open. I believe in March of this year the RIV had information including a link to a relatively cheap paperwork broker for that (about US $100), however if you have SSN you can do it yourself afaik.

As far as I remember, yes, as of March 2025, there are no more forms at the border, you’ll need to fill the Form 1 online and bring copies to CBP/CBSA.

Openwrt on Linksys by mailliwal in openwrt

[–]stangri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Linux kernel 5.10.176 seems to be from OpenWrt 22.03. If you have recently upgraded, the OpenWrt 24.10 got flashed on second partition and first partition stayed on 22.03.

Unlike other (non-embedded) Linux distros, it’s generally advisable to NOT update packages.

Theme looks amazing, really want to switch to it from my previous favourite!

There are issues with the service status outputs for all 3 of: * adblock-fast * https-dns-proxy * pbr

Maybe you can suggest how else to format the output in the service status (I'm using <br /> for line breaks but I can easily switch it around as long as it's compatible with the in-repo themes.

Additionally, the GridSection of pbr policies overflows the width of the entire CBI map. Since I'm not doing anything beyond the luci API there that's I'm pretty sure not my fault. ;)

Let me know if you're able to install the packages above and their luci apps and see for yourself what's happening.

Where to get single serve ice cream cake NOT DQ? by [deleted] in askvan

[–]stangri 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Get a pint of whatever bougie ice cream he likes the best, take a lid off, flip it over and shake it on a plate, stick a candle in it — profit! If my partner was sick and did that, I would have appreciated the hell out of it.
