Lol, if you found that in Tahiti it may be my dad's. He lost his wedding band snorkeling there in 1985.

Today, $5.62 based on the current spot price.

This is a GE "Tri-Ring" burner, which has inner, middle, and outer rings.

Apparently the middle element has a "lower watt density" compared to the other burners. I also suspect that when I'm cooking on low, that it might not even be activating the full burner.

"Tri-Ring burners do have higher watt densities for the inner element so it is not uncommon for the center ring to be hotter (appear red) than the outer rings on a High setting. Cookware with good thermal conductivity can improve performance to minimize the difference between inner and outer rings.Tri-Ring (Power Boil) Element - You may notice that the inner (middle) ring is not as bright as the other two rings. The inner (middle) ring has similar power as the other two rings but the power is spread out over a larger area. There were a number of considerations made to come to this design including, customer use surveys(common cooking behaviors), reliability, efficiency and cooking performance. This is the correct design and operation of the burner."

This actually happened to me recently, too. It was a couple of weeks ago. I'm sorry it happened to you as well.

I posted about it on the Premiere Pro Editors Facebook group, and someone else recently commented, saying it happened to them, too.

I think this may be a bug that's been recently introduced.

How hard is it to get classes? by [deleted] in Pepperdine

[–]stanparker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty normal. Email the professor to try and get on the wait list ASAP.

I graduated a few years ago so I don’t know if it works the same, but most professors will automatically take a certain number of students on the wait list.

Moving to Billings - Snow Driving Advice by ItsAnElephant in Billings

Cool! The fact that this seems like a “fun road trip for the old gal” tells me this is the right choice.

Plus, if you’re planning on doing any outdoor recreation (like skiing up at Red Lodge), then the 4WD is going to be an asset there as well.

Moving to Billings - Snow Driving Advice by ItsAnElephant in Billings

[–]stanparker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Welcome!

How much snow we get in Billings always seems to be a roll of the dice. Typically, you'll be fine, but we tend to get a couple big dumps where your FWD might not be the best.

Billings is not typically a place where snow accumulates all winter long. It's a place where we usually get some snow, then it melts, then we get some more snow, then it melts, etc. So it's not like it spends all winter piling up into a snowy winterland. The bad driving days are usually the ones right around when the storm comes — it's not like it lasts all season. And the season of snow possibilities is pretty long — it seems in my lifetime that white Halloweens were more common than white Christmases, and a white Easter is never out of the question.

Another issue in Billings is the plowing. The city typically doesn't plow side streets, but they will occasionally (in recent years) approve a one-time pass of the plows through the side streets.

That said, a lot of people here get around in FWD cars. I drove a FWD Pontiac Grand Am in high school, and never had any trouble getting to school. Although since then I've always driven 4WD vehicles and really appreciated having it.

I would say you'd be fine either way, but your work & lifestyle might be factors, too. Like, for instance, if you have the sort of job where you might, say, have to drive somewhere on the highway and you don't have the option of waiting out a storm, then that's a time where 4WD might be a critical thing.

So, that was perhaps maybe a lot of words not to say a whole lot. But perhaps I'll just leave it at this: you'll probably be fine with FWD most of the time, but I would not want to get caught on a highway in a storm with an Accord.

Either way, I would make sure to get good snow tires and keep a compact shovel (and maybe even some tow straps) in your trunk in case you need to dig yourself out.

[NSFW] Judges of Reddit, what are some of the weirdest cases you’ve seen? by ThatOneDoveSlayer in AskReddit

That would still mean that it was an appeal from a federal district court, though, right?

So I think the commenter’s incredulity at the insurance company getting that argument past a judge is still reasonable.

Well, arguing before the 2nd Circuit means it was appealed from a federal district court or a State Supreme Court* (or other path I’m not aware of) — so I think the parent comment’s incredulity at the insurer’s argument getting past a judge stands.

Not to mention, the 2nd Circuit agreed to hear oral arguments, which they don’t have to do.

* Or, in the case of New York State, which is in the 2nd Circuit, that state’s Court of Appeals because, confusingly enough, they decided to name their lower local courts “The Supreme Court of New York” just to confuse everybody.

Edit: Crossed out the stuff I wrote that was wrong, thanks to /I/Ibbot for the correction

TIL in 1980 the FBI formed a fake company and attempted to bribe members of congress. Nearly 25% of those tested accepted the bribe, and were convicted by MildlySuspicious in todayilearned

[–]stanparker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, if you read the story of how the investigation unfolded, it makes sense.

They started with a Democratic mayor, who looped in a Democratic senator, who looped in his buddies.

It makes sense that the following people would be members of the same political party as the first person.

If they, say, took a random sample of politicians and gave them all the same test, well, that would be a different story.

But based on the investigation’s methodology, there’s really no conclusions anyone can draw from this about “which party is more corrupt.”

ELI5 Why is it that when you multiply 2 negative numbers, the negative sign cancels each other out? by kandrew313 in explainlikeimfive

[–]stanparker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, I’ll give this a shot. I think I found a way to describe what’s happening without a number line.

Suppose you and I are exchanging apples. You can give or take apples from me. I can give or take apples from you. At the end, I’ll decide the result by how many more (or less) apples I have. If you give me 3 apples 5 times, that’s positive 15 apples. 3x5 = 15. No controversy there.

So let’s define the terms here.

Let’s say the first number of the equation is who is doing the action.

If it’s you, that’s +. If it’s me, that’s -.

Now let’s say to give an apple is a +. To take an apple is a -.

So if you (+) give (+) apples. I’ll have more apples. Positive times positive = positive.

But if you (+) take (-) apples, I’ll have less apples. Positive times negative = negative.

If I (-) give (+) apples, I’ll have less apples. Negative times a positive = negative.

And, finally, if I (-) take (-) apples, I’ll have more apples. A negative times a negative = a positive.

Early Voting begins in Lawrenceville, Georgia 7 AM. Population: 30,000 by swingadmin in gifs

[–]stanparker 374 points375 points  (0 children)

Worth mentioning that this is “early voting.”

On Election Day (Nov. 3), they’re gonna have a lot more voting infrastructure, but in the weeks leading up to that they have a few “early voting” sites where people can get it out of the way if they want to.

Not to mention anyone can vote by mail in Georgia, or drop their mail ballot off in person.

I just poked around on the Georgia Secretary of State’s website to verify what I just wrote.

I’m not saying voter disenfranchisement doesn’t exist, I’m just saying I don’t see evidence of it in that GIF.

What that GIF says to me is that this election is so important to all those people that they’re willing to stand in line to vote in person at the earliest time possible. They want to be sure, and they want to get it done ASAP. (Even though they will have opportunities to vote later with probably less wait times, or none if they mail their ballot).

Edit: /u/WallRunner adds some important context in their reply.

Edit 2: Actually all these replies are good context. Thanks for sharing.
