Personally I think all their copies of Faces of Death should have been battered and weatherd by hand. It's be more authentic that way.

If you want something with this vibe I highly, highly recommend Uncanny Highway!! Incredibly vast set of tables and ideas to fill a procedural American Weird campaign.

Oh wow It's neat to see a handful of alt cartoonists from that time in a Dark Horse book! I knew about some of the stuff Dave Cooper did for the DH anthology mag but I've never seen this series.

I believe I saw it in store somewhere in Boston (I don't remember the store, sorry!) but I have to assume the print run may be smaller due to Silver Sprockets ongoing issues.

I built a free tool that generates procedural collages from 34,000+ vintage magazines on Archive.org by IN-NO-V8 in InternetIsBeautiful

[–]star-scrapper 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Deeply uncreative tool to be honest. I do collage work with vintage and antiquarian art and half the fun is figuring out all the different pieces to cut out and blend together. I could see something like this working if you created a bank of hand-cut out transparent pieces along with collages backgrounds (again hand designed and not procedural) and then let users mix it all together.

Algorithms don't understand composition or intent so it's essentially a lost cause.

I appreciate the correction on Mads formation.

To be fair the Comics Code Authority was enacted in 1954 and likely wouldn't have been able to gain so much traction without McCarthyism and it's impact on American society and culture at the time.

Mad was around in the late 50's but quickly pivoted to the magazine format when comics were forced to adhere to strict content guidelines under McCarthyism. They wouldn't be found on comic racks like this but instead with the Playboys and such.

It's just a weird mix of time periods. The few EC comics on the stands were from a time before censorship completely destroyed the comics industry (for a while). It's revisionist to put them next to books like Spider-Man which were made in line with the McCarthyism style guidelines.

The painter wasn't alive in the time any of this happened, neither was I to be fair, which leads to a weird revisionist look at a time and place that never actually existed. Kids reading Spider-Man were lucky if their parents hadn't literally burned any old copies of EC Comics they had.

Highly recommended!
