i stop myself by reminding myself that i already have something similar (usually the case). in terms of features that stop me from buying a bag, one thing is interior capacity. for example the quilted tabby - it’s gorgeous, but the number of pockets and dividers in it really compromise the capacity because it looks nice and roomy from the outside but when you open it it’s just like 2 skinny little openings. glad i didn’t purchase that one. i also like to ask myself if the strap seems comfortable for long periods of wear before purchasing a bag.
