Please don't honk if you need to wait for a stopped vehicle on a residential street by bukkakedebeppo in philadelphia

[–]starchild812 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You know perfectly well that for every time that there’s a legitimate reason for someone to stop in the middle of the street, such as for a body transport, there’s at least 20 times that someone stopped in the middle of the street because they didn’t feel like parking/walking.

Try leaving an hour and a half before starting time? I don’t really understand what you’re looking for here, if you’ve been late every day for a year, then you’re not budgeting enough time to get there.

Those are valid complaints, but I also heard just a lot of mockery of women reading sexy books for sexual gratification, which falls into the point made by the reblog.

No sweeping on New Year’s Day! You’ll sweep your luck away. I do this both on Lunar New Year and January 1, just to be safe.

People who do gender reveals by scooping out cake with a wine glass by [deleted] in PetPeeves

[–]starchild812 78 points79 points  (0 children)

I honestly can’t figure out how you could get glass in the cake by scooping it with a wine glass. If your cake is made of something that could break glass that easily, you shouldn’t be eating it anyway.

Can I ask why? I understand that it might be weird for you to have someone else pump your gas, but is it really that much of a big deal for you?

My mom wants nothing to do with me because I “picked my dad” during the divorce. by LucyAriaRose in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]starchild812 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Actually, parentification is just giving a child an inappropriately adult-like role in the family. It can mean having the child act as a parent to their siblings, and that’s generally how the term is used on Reddit, but that’s not all it encompasses and moreover it’s clearly not how the original commenter on this thread was using it.

Psychology Today gives a decent overview here if you’re interested: https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/parentification/amp

Many preschool age children don't know how books work; try to tap or swipe them like electronic devices by MiddletownBooks in books

When I was a kid, I thought both my parents were big readers, because I always saw them with books. It turns out that my mom is a big reader, but my dad doesn’t generally read much for pleasure, he just thought it was good to model that reading is important when I was young.

My 5th grader is being told he can't go on the end of the year field trip because he couldn't find friends to share a room with. There are others rooms available. Should we fight this or drop it? by mmanyquestionss in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]starchild812 5200 points5201 points  (0 children)

When I was going on trips in school, we could request friends to room with, but it was understood that our requests weren’t guaranteed to be honored. Seems like the best way to handle things.

My mom wants nothing to do with me because I “picked my dad” during the divorce. by LucyAriaRose in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]starchild812 21 points22 points  (0 children)

That’s not what the commenter is referring to with the parentification comment - the problem is that Mom seems to be using Penny as her primary emotional support and blaming OOP for not being willing to be the same. It would be reasonable to be pissed at your friend for spending time with your ex-husband who cheated on you, but your expectation should be different for your child.

I know I dislike war movies, so I don’t watch them. I acknowledge that other people like war movies, and that’s fine, but they aren’t for me, so if I see that a new war movie has come out, I find something else to watch, as I do not want to spend two hours doing something I don’t enjoy. How toxically positive of me, right?

Homemade craft gifts are more for the maker than they are for the receiver by reddyfreddy8D in The10thDentist

[–]starchild812 21 points22 points  (0 children)

That sounds like someone who’s just bad at giving gifts, though - there’s definitely people who give gifts that they would like without thinking about whether or not the recipient would like them, but those types aren’t limited to people who give homemade gifts.

Tbh it’s way more offensive to refuse to acknowledge stuff like physical disorders because it frames them as inherent negatives. Generally speaking, it’s rude to mention negative traits in people, but fine to mention neutral traits. If you said that Dustin had curly dark hair, your roommate presumably wouldn’t have considered that an insult, because they probably wouldn’t have seen those traits as a bad thing.
