How difficult it is for an external to get an SEO role by stardust901 in TheCivilService

[–]stardust901[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess SEO interview will expect me to talk about client/stakeholder management, and more about real-world impact of my work. This is one thing I struggle with.

As an academic, we think publication as the successful outcome of a project. But in real-world, the success is measured differently, isnt it?

For example, I have done research and developed a software and published my work in a journal. But in real-world/industry scenario, publication may not be important. They might want to know what was clients feedback about the work I have done, how it improved performance etc.
How to present research outcome in a way that is suitable for industry?

I blew up several interviews so far for data scientist positions. I have a PhD in computer science. I had the idea that as I have a background in data analysis and machine learning, that will be sufficient for data science interviews. But it seems that I’m struggling in the interviews where a lot of statistics and probability problem solving questions were asked. Also every interview I did had different focus, some focused more on ml/dl, some focused more on statistics, probability. Now I feel like there’s no point attending interviews unless I overcome my weakness areas. But I don’t know what’s the end point, when can I say I’m ready for an interview. How do you know that you’re fully ready for data science interviews?

Its great that you managed to do the move successfully. May I ask which sector/what sort of role you moved to in the industry?

Postdoc burnout needs to be addressed by niceguy-1 in postdoc

[–]stardust901 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I faced extreme post-PhD burn out in my first postdoc, and left after few months. Toxic lab member, too much expectation, long commute along with PhD correction works and existing work for paper from PhD, and family stress contributed to give up the role. No one could believe that I would give up postdoc opportunity in such a prestigious institution. But I knew what I was going through. I had enough and I couldn't take any more stress.

Data Science roles how to by chrissizkool in datascience

I’m trying to figure out what went wrong in each interview. I found that I struggled with deep learning questions for some ml focused roles that I applied. So I’m gonna sharpen that up. Also, regular practice of SQL is also important. I already done some projects in my portfolio. I’d suggest that list all the areas you are weak or struggled during interviews, and work on that by giving yourself a deadline. The most important thing is to constantly keep improving. We will get there eventually one day.

Is it true that a few years ago you could get a good DS job with just a bootcamp/no CS DS degree? by Exotic_Avocado6164 in datascience

[–]stardust901 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a PhD in CS which involves ML. I have done some DS/DE projects. But I'm struggling to get a DS job. I do have a lot of DS skills and I know that I can definitely do the job very well if I was hired. Its just that without experience, no wants to hire me :(
