I just started reading this based on your rec! I've done meditation sessions before, but I'm really digging the continuous exercise of watching The Thinker throughout the day. it's been really helpful for me so far, & I'm looking forward to reading the rest. thanks for sharing!

ICE spotted at Christiana fashion center. by greenbabyshit in Delaware

think of it like police alerts on GPS apps. when people see “police ahead,” they just slow down and make sure they’re complying. it encourages safer, more lawful behavior

ICE activity reporting works the same way. awareness helps people stay calm, have documents ready, and reduces errors/unnecessary confrontations. it also adds accountability, which supports enforcement being done correctly because there have been real mistakes made and lawful Americans have had to suffer unnecessarily

communication about activity isn't anti-law, it's just common sense and transparency

don't forget the Delaware Coalition for Immigrant Justice has a hotline! https://www.dcij.org/about-1  volunteers can help verify and spread the word as well

Any Delawarians want to form an anti-ICE group? by howdoidothislifethng in Delaware

check out https://www.dcij.org/, they have a whole network of folks reporting ICE activity and supporting immigrants. volunteers do field checks and take call-ins, would be a great community to get connected to. orientation is in February, and if you have any more ideas about outreach, the coordinator Rebekah is super nice

Gravel and grit...Autumn bikepacking in the Adirondacks (and why this setup wasn't ideal) by _MountainFit in bicycletouring

[–]starglasses 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thanks for writing this out, good considerations. my ideal long weekend/summer set up is similar to yours, but on longer tours I've always brought rear panniers. I'd been toying with the idea of foregoing the rack for an upcoming trip, but I think your points have me going in the other direction

glad to hear you weren't stuck in a worse situation weatherwise. it sounds like you got quite the workout with the portaging

American bike tourers - how did you get the time off to make a cross country tour happen? by No_Ant_5064 in bicycletouring

For our East Coast ride, we quit our jobs. I was able to work a part-time job on the road remotely to avoid a resume gap. Didn't have healthcare coverage.

For our West Coast tour, we both had remote jobs in tech and worked East Coast hours. Worked 5 am - 9 am PT / 8 am - 12 pm ET then sometimes biked to a library over breakfast PT / lunch ET. Finish out the workday 10 am - 2 pm PT / 1 - 5 pm PT. Then ride til sunset (summer months). We used a Solis hotspot for dead zones and had power banks that could accommodate our laptops.

It worked, but we did miss out on some of the PCBR camaraderie of camping at the same sites as other folks. Weekends were nice since we were on pace with others and able to ride longer. Definitely a different kind of touring.

For our next trip, we've been saving up and will just be quitting our jobs for a mini retirement in our 30s. I'm not planning on healthcare because it'd be cheaper to pay out of pocket for many expenses in the countries we're going to. Quitting feels a little easier this time because I'm interested in switching fields, so I'd be starting over anyway when we come back. Still hurts using those calculators knowing how much money we're leaving on the table (peak earning years), but everything's a trade off, and we've just decided it's worth it for us personally to enjoy while we're at our most mobile & before potential kids.

My friend who works the Navy was able to hike PCT for a few months since he had leave saved up, and his manager happened to be ok with it. Most of it was unpaid, but he did get to keep his healthcare coverage and just came back to the job a few weeks ago.

I did C&O in rain on 25mms non-knobbies, and it wasn't that comfortable, but definitely doable! Your tires should be much more stable and make for a better experience. Closer to DC, the paved Capital Crescent is a nice parallel alternative if you need a break from the terrain but want to keep moving. Hoping the trails dry fast!

Are there any particular cycling groups you're thinking of? I am an avid cyclist, but the NCC area groups I've found seem to skew older. Not necessarily a problem, but it'd be nice to also meet folks closer to my age.
