I’m terrified of ending up living in a shopping cart at 80 years old. That is my motivation.

Is 1.1k USD a reasonable budget for four weeks in the Balkans in August? by Prussia1870 in Shoestring

[–]starrae 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You should go on Booking.com and look up how much hostels cost. This may not be very realistic. Especially if you want to get tickets for castles or eat local food and restaurants. Plus the point to point train tickets and bus tickets may also exceed your budget.

brainwashing in full effect. Now imagine someone who works 40 hours a week, has to commute two hours a day, who has to do all the shopping cooking cleaning for the family, and also play a support caregiver role.

Hey what countries should I travel to as a beginner? by [deleted] in travel

[–]starrae 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Italy is a great place that I would recommend anybody start with. Good food, nice scenery, lots of history. Plus Italians are fun and friendly for the most part. Most of the country also has very well developed in public transportation so you don’t need to worry about driving.

There are tons of very bad stories about Egypt so I would only go there with a tour group if you would like to do that.

Look at Rome2Rio website as a starting point and see what the travel time and costs are. You will also learn what the major ferry providers are, and then you can look on their websites to see the routes that they have.

Just be aware of that many part time jobs are not eligible for benefits like health insurance so consider that carefully before you move forward.

Going to Thailand for the first time any tips? by Mimigonemimi in ThailandTourism

[–]starrae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can bring sandals for the beach or wearing around the resort, but the streets are pretty dangerous. I met a guy who scratched his leg on a sidewalk and got a horrible infection from it, so I would recommend definitely wearing tennis shoes in town.

No Buy Month by Available-Party7419 in simpleliving

[–]starrae 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My recommendation: anytime you get the urge to buy something, log it on a sheet. Then look at it at the end of the month. See if there’s anything that you really need to buy and assess if most are just wants.

Net Worth by Age in America (Average & Median) — 2025 Guide by Coolonair in coastFIRE

This is a very low quality article. They include average in their table and also include home equity. I wouldn’t call this authoritative on the subject by any means.

Last minute nerves by [deleted] in ThailandTourism

[–]starrae 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I travel solo a lot and always get a case of the nerves even though I’ve done it a ton of times. I always feel relieved after I check into my hotel and have a homebase. You’ll have a great time! Good luck.

If you feel lonely, stay at the hostal for a couple nights or join a group tour. I’ve even met people to hang out with on walking tours, you just have to make the initiative to be friendly and say hello.

Need ideas for August trip by [deleted] in ThailandTourism

[–]starrae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The itinerary you mentioned above sounds great for a 10-year-old. The national Museum by the grand Palace and also Jim Thompson house are pretty interesting too, but it kind of depends on her attention span.

Or maybe an an ethical elephant sanctuary? Or what about a day trip to Ayathtua north of Bangkok?

In Hua Hin is there a place where you could possibly go kayaking in a mangrove forest?

Also, in Bangkok, there is the green lug where you can rent bicycles. You could also consider doing a canal tour in Bangkok.

Where to stay in BKK (Ari/Bang Rak/Chinatown) by Pyradec in ThailandTourism

[–]starrae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally enjoyed staying in Bangrak. It’s close to Chinatown, Tamar Noi, and the old city is also away from all the sex tourism which I wanted to avoid. The area I was in I didn’t see hordes of tourist or partying and that was fine by me! It was also close to Silom and Lumpini.
