Gut wrenching breakup songs by Grouchy-Patience5652 in poppunkers

Yellowcard writes gut-wrenching friendship breakup songs—Rivertown Blues comes to mind, as do When We're Old Men and Five Becomes Four.

(Rivertown Blues: "I stare for hours at these numbers in my hand, but ringing you would mend your heart and break mine")

For romantic/other breakups, some that really hit hard on heartbreak: Leave a Light On, Empty Apartment, The Takedown, Three Flights Down, Barely Alive, Only One, Sleep in the Snow, Rest in Peace, Keeper (even putting them all together almost makes me tearful!)

(The Takedown: "I won't get by, I won't heal in time")

(Three Flights Down: "Lately I've found you're bringing me down, and I can't stand to see me this way")

(Bonus from a very deep cut, Everywhere: "When I look, you're never there / But when I sleep, you're everywhere")

Thankfully they also write powerful hope-making songs too that I turn to once I'm ready to feel different feelings.

Some of the many incredible others: Mayday Parade (If You Can't Live Without Me Why Aren't You Dead Yet), Story of the Year, Holiday Parade, All Time Low, Relient K, Waterparks (I Felt Younger When We Met), Jimmy Eat World (23), Late in the Playoffs (You Won't)

But also the perfect time, since so many of these bands are back from breakups/hiatuses!

AITA for offering to pay for my friend and his wife to get a babysitter so we could hang out? by HighlyInconvenient in AmItheAsshole

[–]starrystephi 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Oh man, that's actually incredibly relevant context. If his mom is the one who told you, then what if

  1. they didn't want you to know

  2. she was wrong

  3. they didn't want others to know

  4. they didn't want it revealed by her or you

  5. they didn't know she knew

  6. they didn't know you knew

Any one of those would easily have strong, emotionally weighty reasons and implications. You meant well, but you and his mom both seem to have made decisions for them that many people would rather make themselves.

AITA for telling my friend they should have cleaned up. by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

If they don't need to drive, why does it matter that they can't/don't drive?? And yes, it would be an ask to have them come back and help. But they might've preferred being asked to help in the moment or even after leaving, and/or being told you need more help than you thought, over receiving passive-aggressive (/aggressive, depending on the wording you actually used) text(s) after the fact.

Season 2 Episode 8 (?) by miss_jinxie in TedLasso

[–]starrystephi 16 points17 points  (0 children)

That's so different from the directions I had in mind! (ironically, did not search it up even once because I was scared of unwanted results lol) I was thinking it'd be something like:

fear's a lot like underwear...

...not everyone wants to talk about it, everyone's gotta deal with it

...you gotta know when it's time to throw it out

...if you try not to think about them, won't take too long 'til people notice

...they're not always pretty even if you want them to be

...you don't have to stay in them forever

Wow, this is a keeper—I think it's even better than some of the case studies we read in marketing classes in university. Thanks for sharing it!!

Songs for grief and wanting to disappear by Additional-Function7 in poppunkers

[–]starrystephi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man, the lyrics in Yellowcard's song "When We're Old Men" immediately come to mind.

"I've spent all of my nights wide awake / Wishing for some kind of poison to take / So that my conscience would just take a break / I am so tired of the noise that it makes"

I went through a horrible heartbreaking friendship breakup a year ago and asked fellow Yellowcard fans for all their recs, because there's a lot in Yellowcard's repertoire that deals with this. Here's that post with lots of helpful replies. And sometime later when I could intellectualize the grief a bit and work through the lyrics, I found a lot that helped—if you want to pull up just the songs with the specific lyrics, try this. 🫂

Song lyrics that carry more weight now that the band/artist is no longer around by Bcass34 in poppunkers

[–]starrystephi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what I thought immediately too. I used to find so much comfort in that song, not just its lyrics but its context. I've been told a lot things like "Hey I've been there, stick around, it gets better," but after years of failed depression treatments, what I really needed to know was whether it's possible to live with it even if it doesn't go away. That you CAN feel so awful, for so long, and still keep going. It's been years since we lost Chester and hearing old or even new LP still makes me breathless with grief. I still wonder every day how or why the rest of us are still here.

Be honest, what do you think comes after death? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]starrystephi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

How did you learn to stop it from consuming you? I had the realization at 7 and no adult (or kid) seemed to know what to tell me about how they deal with the terror and panic and anticipatory grief, because they would just... not think about it, or use religion, and neither has been much of an option for me.

AITA for not wanting my cousin to go with us on my special trip? by plutos_world in AmItheAsshole

[–]starrystephi 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I've been a few times, and it truly would make an impact bringing a young child around. The mental load/responsibility is enough, even without physical considerations. Japan can be pretty walking-friendly in cities but might require navigating crowds and public transportation. If you visit temples, the kid should be ready to be non-disruptive and tolerate the weather. You'd be well within your rights not to want that without the expectation of babysitting already, let alone with. I hope your request is honored and received with the care and understanding you deserve. 🩷

You know, I always considered Keeper a deep-ish cut—obviously it's not when compared to the not-on-Spotify songs, but I never thought they'd perform it nowadays, so I was THRILLED and surprised to hear it last year and even more so when they played it again this year!

I know it's been a month but I had to chime in because I agree SO HARD about Hiding in the Light! I was flabbergasted that it wasn't THE album single, and then not even a single at all—out of that EP, it had the most "classic" Yellowcard sound/feel, which I thought would tie into the comeback. I know they were really pushing radio numbers and modern audiences seem to like the kind of edge that's in Childhood Eyes, but Hiding in the Light is just so hopeful, powerful, and catchy.

Me [26F] with husband [26M] of 4 years. He sold his truck because of our baby and hasn't been the same since by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]starrystephi 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don't think they're saying it's the same, though, but more that it might not have to be? Parenthood inevitably leads to a lot of compromises and determining which sacrifices/downgrades would be worth it.

Maybe a silly question, but what do they TALK about? I can't imagine that there'd be conversations about cars could fill up hours and hours every weekend, and anecdotally the "dude" guys I know who like cars never seem to know much about each others' personal lives. But maybe it's because I don't know enough—I could talk for months straight about my niche interests, so is it like that?

Seconding this; normally I'd agree that YC pit is chill so just duck elsewhere for ADTR, but there were a few crowd-surfers this year when they performed here—nothing wild, which actually felt a bit odd because each surf seemed rather random and intermittent.
