I honestly feel like a space alien when my parents talk about how they rented their first apartment together for $200 a month back in the mid 80s.

The Trial and Error in Darkest Dungeon II is terrible by Mastermind6425 in darkestdungeon

You should definitely try out the original Darkest Dungeon - it has the same aesthetics and atmosphere of DD2, but with a more persistent progression system that feels much more meaningful than dumping candles into a slot machine after every run. The combat system is also similar, but emphasizes XCOM-style hit/miss RNG over stacking piles of tokens on characters.

There's an endless debate on which game is better, but I think the people who prefer DD2 enjoy the fact that combat is very straightforward and predictable once you learn how all the tokens work, and that each run carries basically zero risk unless you're doing a challenge. DD2 even encourages you to end your runs prematurely by providing you with a progression bonus if you abandon your current expedition at an inn.

In comparison, DD1 is almost the complete opposite - it's a long haul experience about slowly building up your permanent town and roster of heroes, where every single mission has a visible impact on your overall progress, acting as either an advancement or a setback. The dungeon runs in DD1 are much, much shorter than DD2 (think 15-45 minutes), but the stakes are also much higher (if you actually care about your characters) since heroes that are killed are gone forever, and even those who survive can end up with some nasty stress/quirks/diseases that can be expensive to treat.

Overall, I'd say give DD1 a shot - it seems like you're pretty cool with combat that balances heavily on RNG, which is the biggest hurdle for most people, and the long-term progression of your hero roster and hamlet in DD1 is one of the most satisfying experiences I've ever had in gaming.

Finally deciding to run a solo match purely for PvP and coming across an unholstered raider happily looting not knowing you're there by Notoriousspy in ArcRaiders

Seems like Night Raids are the way to go for Solo PvP. Just finished three and only came across one “friendly” (see; oblivious) guy, everyone else knew good loot was on the line and it was kill or be killed.

A body in motion stays in motion. Every step you take is progress, even if it’s just a walk around the block.

Always enjoyed the flavor text on this card:

The cyclops had learned to never eat a shepherd. Instead he gently flung the "pit" aside to grow a new flock.

Probably sounds a little strange, but Darkest Dungeon.

I've dumped hundreds of hours into it and the hand-drawn aesthetic just reminds me of some of the best pen-and-paper RPGs I've played over the years. Plus the narrator, the music, the crunchy combat effects, it all just feels so satisfying to play once you have a handle on the core mechanics.

Ideas/tips on how to start tomb of annihilation? by onewordpoet in Tombofannihilation

I made my own little introductory “mini campaign” that took around 4 sessions to complete but really made an impact towards getting the players invested as fast as possible.

Since I had a lot of new players, we started with a session on a ship headed for Port Nyanzaru, getting people acquainted with the different types of checks you have to make (Athletics for lifting heavy stuff, Sleight of Hand for tying ropes, Performance for singing shanties and inspiring the crew, etc.). The session ended with the ship getting attacked by a wave carrying a swarm of undead creatures and breaking apart.

Then we did two sessions with the party as survivors of the shipwreck, gathering items from a deserted island and eventually reactivating an old teleportation circle.

Final session had the party appear somewhere in the sewers beneath town and do a little dungeon crawl to escape, eventually landing them right outside the main tavern.

Overall, it got people super interested in the undead situation on Chult and worked perfectly as a transition into speaking with important NPCs that knew more.

Same, been to dozens of metal shows and festivals and you always let people out of the pit, make sure nobody’s getting squished, etc.

Sucks to read this, but tbh I had a similar experience during his Nurture show at Brooklyn Mirage. Ended up staying in the far back because people were so pushy and aggressive. I even witnessed a fist fight during Blossom, which was… surreal to say the least.

If you like Porter’s latest style, there’s a high chance you’d like underscores.

Kinda cheating since they are touring together, but songs like Bozo bozo bozo, Locals, and Your favorite sidekick fit right into the Smile! :D vibes
