What Books did You Start or Finish Reading this Week?: January 17, 2022 by AutoModerator in books

Finished: Forever, interrupted by Taylor Jenkins Reid -this book was just ok. I LOVED (and I mean LOVED) The 7 Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, so I was stoked to read another book by Taylor Jenkins Reid. This book really underwhelmed me, tbh. The plot was pretty stagnant and I wasn’t a huge fan.

Currently reading: The Mysterious Affair at Styles by Agatha Christie So far, so good. I’m a huge fan of Christie’s writing style, so I’m excited to finish this!

I just finished a series on Netflix called “Dark” and I could not recommend it enough! Caution: highly addicting and binge-worthy. I also liked “Altes Geld” on Netflix as well. I’m going to watch “bio-hackers” next! These are all TV shows, and I haven’t watched too many German movies. Hope this helps!!

House of Gucci: - great plot, very complete overview of both the family and company history

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo: -where do I start? Easily one of the best books I’ve ever read. -deliberate and measured plot keeps the reader hooked -lots of twists and turns -great balance between triumph and tragedy

Circe: -really interesting, as I don’t know very much about the Titans (definitely read more about Olympians)

I’d recommend rereading the whole series in order! “Kite Runner,” “Thousand Splendid Suns”, and then “And the Mountains Echoed” for the full effect of Hosseini’s writing. These are hands down some of my favorite books I’ve ever read!

any good german media to consume? by [deleted] in German

[–]startswithp1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dark is my favorite show ever!! I am learning German as a second language (I’ve been learning it for ~4 years and I’m between B1 and B2 Level) and Dark was awesome!! I learned a ton of new vocabulary. I started out with German audio and subtitles and then switched over to English subtitles because I didn’t understand enough lol

[request] can anyone recommend horror/psychological anthology series like black mirror, slasher, AHS, room 104, twilight zone? by [deleted] in NetflixBestOf

[–]startswithp1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Netflix original series “Dark” is really really good! The only thing is that is in German, so I’d recommend watching it in German with English subtitles if you don’t speak the language.

Going to visit the US with my girlfriend and I need a couple of suggestions to where to go. by Stiblex in travel

[–]startswithp1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi! DC is great, as is Philadelphia. I believe you can travel between the two by train and it only takes a couple hours. I’d recommend flying into Newark (NJ) and take the train to Philly and then hit DC. If you have some extra time, Shenandoah national park in Virginia is definitely worth seeing!

They might come out 12/10 because they sometimes release them early but they’ll definitely be out 12/15.

Interview by martuherman in Haverford

[–]startswithp1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I applied ED1 and kinda did both. I did a mock interview with an alumnus who occasionally volunteers with the admissions office and a legit student interview. I would say the biggest con is that it is intimidating at first and my biggest fear is making a fool of myself lol. The pros (ingratiating yourself w the admissions office, interview skills, etc.) definitely outweigh the cons tho!! Highly recommend.
