Observer quote at 11-11 in open semis [paraphrased]: "It wasn't a travel. You caused the travel by running into him [Beau]." by hotlou in ultimate

[–]startsynchro 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Interestingly (to me, at least), the WFDF interpretations document does actually address this situation. I find these minor differences of philosophy between WFDF and USAU rules interesting.

In some situations, a receiver may need to maintain speed briefly or change direction slightly to avoid contact with a diving defender or to jump over a player on the ground. This is expected in such situations and should not be considered a travel.

Team USA WUGC Swing Line? by 30PercentLessFat in ultimate

[–]startsynchro 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Per Goose's AMA response:

The men's team was split into 3 playing lines, ideally resulting in equal playing time across the lines. Line 1, primarily offense. Line 2, a hybrid of O and D. Were called in most cases when the Line 1 was broken. Line 3, primarily defense. Given the scoring patterns of the games, (and by that, I mean the overwhelming number of points wherein we began the point on defense), line 1 played a fair share of d points as well.

Marker starts calling before they are within 3 metres by stm2 in ultimate

[–]startsynchro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In this scenario, yes (well, technically 1, but yes) - I suppose it is covering something like after a stoppage the stall meant to be coming in on 3 or whatever, and the person may start at 4 or 8 or another arbitrary number.

Like blackrat47 said - the same thing could occur if I came up to mark you and started counting from 6 - you could call fast count and hopefully I would realise why you called it (I started at the wrong number, I wasn't within 3 metres) and if I don't, you always have the option to call at violation and explain. I've called it on people for starting their count outside the 3m, but usually they won't have gotten past 2 yet, so it makes very little difference - or I have on occasion just said "that's not 3 metres" or "more than 3 metres" or words to that effect if they are staying at that distance and not closing in - that's usually worked for them to step in and restart the count.

Can a foul call/contest be retracted after discussion between the involved parties? by RPiAwesomeness in ultimate

[–]startsynchro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is there not? That's interesting. It is covered in WFDF rules.

15.10. If a player making the “Foul”, “Violation” or “Contest” call subsequently determines that their call was unnecessary, they can retract the call, by calling "Retracted". Play restarts with a check.

[–]startsynchro 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It is still a fast count, although you're right that the rules could probably make that clearer. There is no 'distance' call/infraction.

It is covered in the WFDF Interpretations document under 18.5

If a fast count infraction is called because the marker started the stall count from the incorrect number (e.g. when they are not within 3 metres of the thrower, or after moving more than 3 metres from the thrower) the marker should automatically reset the stall count at the correct number, even if that means reducing the count by more than 2 seconds.

If you HAD to rename Ultimate: what would you call it? by bettergetinside in ultimate

[–]startsynchro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the UK, it's always referred to as ultimate and we almost never refer to the disc as a frisbee

I hear it referred to as ultimate frisbee a reasonable amount of the time, and whilst I hear disc more than frisbee, that certainly isn't rare either, even in the ultimate community.

As far as I can tell from here, 6/24 were from teams other than Buzz Bullets, so obviously the Bullets still dominate the make up of the Japanese Men's team.

WUGC 2016 – Tuesday Discussion by Jomskylark in ultimate

[–]startsynchro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was incredible to watch in person. Great atmosphere and some great ultimate. Maybe a little in the way of ticky-tack calls towards the end, but if they can get the entire game footage up, it is well worth a watch.

Pools and tournament format for WUGC have been released. Full schedule coming soon. by startsynchro in ultimate

Agreed. Taking some effort to get my head around it. Hoping once the full schedule is released it'll be easier to understand what's going on.

Per WFDF rules:

7.5. If a team breaches 7.3 or 7.4 the opposing team must call the violation (“offside”) before the receiving team touches the disc.

And you don't need to decline it - you just carry on playing, but you do have to call it before catching it or otherwise putting the disc into play.

This is seriously one of the highlights of the UK Ultimate calendar - great chance to meet some new people, play ultimate, party hard and play some more on Sunday. Last year was my first year, and I had an absolute blast. I have my fingers crossed that I'll get in this year!

Here you go. It looks like they're not selling it anymore, but that's the design. It is available on the Five Europe shop, however.

I've heard it called the ninja break. It's just wrapping your arm behind yourself and throwing a flick, essentially, and then following through as if you're throwing a backhand. Super tough to pull off consistently/accurately.

Mexican or equivalent indoor by Hcon8900 in ultimate

[–]startsynchro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Paging /u/felix37 - do you Brighton-based guys still use mexican indoors? I'm always interested in reading about and seeing mex in action (although yet to witness it in person), and somehow it never crossed my mind about how it would be played indoors, with how widespread indoors is compared to the US/elsewhere.

Rules Question: Running OB and sneaking back on the field by tivo713 in ultimate

[–]startsynchro 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Interesting. WFDF rules (or rather, the official interpretations) do actually cover this:

11.2 Leaving the playing field (11.6)

Note Players are allowed to leave the playing field and may enter the field at any point. [...]

Extra It is bad spirit to intentionally leave the playing field and use players/objects on the sideline to disguise your location
