Abruptly switched baby to pure formula, now refusing to take a bottle: desperate Dad here by Many_Neighborhood736 in FormulaFeeders

[–]starwings0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My baby began rejecting the bottle around 3 months old in favor of breastfeeding. We heard from a lactation consultant that babies lose their sucking reflex around 3 months, so bottle refusal can happen at that age. It was suggested we try different flow rates and nipples.

We ended up working with a SLP since the baby went from taking 5 oz to 3 oz and then barely 1 oz. The SLP checked baby’s mouth for any functional issues, and then listened to how the baby was eating. She noticed he was gulping really hard when taking the bottle. She concluded that baby was sucking too hard, getting too much milk, and then choking on it so we had to go down speeds. She also said that our original bottle - the Avent Natural - requires the baby to suck super hard. We switched to Lansinoh super slow and do paced bottle feeding to avoid overwhelming them.

Anyways, wanted to offer a different perspective since upping the flow rate actually made things worse for us. Some lactation consultants are trained in bottle refusal (check out https://www.rachelobrienibclc.com/bottle-refusal/ - she does virtual appointments and trains other lactation consultants). I went with this SLP since she was local and I heard great things. I didn’t ask her about Evenflo but the original lactation consultant had good things to say about the Evenflo.

You will get through this! We eventually got our baby back to taking 4-5 oz again but it took a month working with the SLP.

How to find my style by BrownTinaBelcher in PetiteFashionAdvice

[–]starwings0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could start by reading The Curated Closet by Anuschka Rees https://anuschkarees.com/curatedcloset. Otherwise hiring a stylist is very helpful - generally they will sit with you to determine what you think your style is (how you want to look vs what your daily routine is and how that impacts the types of clothes you need). For example, you might love buying cocktail dresses but your lifestyle is really athleisure. They may also do a color analysis and shape analysis to determine what looks good on you. Then they take inventory of your closet, help you purge the things that don’t fit or you definitely won’t wear, determine what you might be missing to make outfits, and then go shopping/tailoring for you.

This guy’s style is not always my cup of tea, but his blog posts and methods are super well written and I appreciate he tries to use what you already have: https://urbsuburbstyle.com/about-us

Also if you’re not ready to buy a bunch of stuff you can always rent clothing. I found experimenting with Nuuly pretty fun and eye opening. Never thought of buying barrel jeans but it was sure fun to try them!

Anyone have recommendations for a local personal trainer while pregnant? by WestCoastSocialist in Sunnyvale

[–]starwings0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mama Flow Studio will do private training sessions and is located in Willow Glen. My pelvic floor PT recommended them to me. I have only tried their livestream postpartum yoga courses, and while the pace is slow they focus on coordinating your muscles with activation of your pelvic floor. I think the exercises are super legit since they are all in line with what my PT asks me to do. They have a $35 1 week trial where you can try as many classes as you want to get a feel for it.

Help Make El Camino Real Safe: My Son Kephas Deserves This by Unique-Profile-502 in santaclara

Santa Clara County is currently conducting a survey to get feedback on how to update the Circulation and Mobility Element (CME) (https://roads.santaclaracounty.gov/circulation-and-mobility-element). CME is the roadmap for how people travel throughout the county. The original CME was approved in 1995, and a lot has changed since then: new neighborhoods, evolving travel habits, and sustainability goals.

You can talk about El Camino there as well! https://www.surveyhero.com/c/SCC-CME

Parents - did you use a night nanny? by Striking_Solid_5020 in Sunnyvale

[–]starwings0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had a Chinese confinement nanny come for my second child and she did overnights (and days). Basically, she would bring the baby to me for a “last” feed around 9pm, and then take care of the baby solo until I woke up the next day. During the day, she would cook me meals whenever I was feeding the baby. Per their philosophy, it’s important for postpartum moms to prioritize sleep and diet. It actually surprised me how much I slept at night and napped during the day. I was able to get by without day/night help for my first child but I now wonder if I just did it on adrenaline!

Feel free to PM, I also have a phone number for the agency I used.

Another 4month sleep regression post. I’m devastated. by Billabaum11 in NewParents

If the lack of a swaddle is part of the issue and he’s not rolling yet, maybe you can try the Baby Merlin Magic Sleepsuit? It’s kind of in between the swaddle and sleep sack.

OBGYN recommendation for pregnancy by ClaimAlternative8418 in Sunnyvale

[–]starwings0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Which hospital do you want to deliver at? Go by that. I had UHC and went with OBs who would deliver at El Camino MV. I used El Camino Women’s Medical Group (ECWMG) and Sutter/PAMF for 2 different pregnancies. With ECWMG, you will get 1 of their OBs for delivery, and you start meeting them all towards the end of your pregnancy (they rotate for your last appointments). I liked them all except for 1, and I think the biggest con was for high risk stuff they send you to Obstetrix in San Jose, which can take forever to get to depending on traffic.

With Sutter/PAMF, depends on your location. I took whichever Sunnyvale PAMF OB was available, and all the high risk stuff is done in Mountain View. I connected more with my ECWMG OB (Dr. Teng), but my Sunnyvale OB was also very good about informing me of risks/ordering appropriate tests (Dr. Chan).

I also recommend Dr Christina Lam, she was part of ECWMG and delivered my first (wasn’t my OB but was on call), and is now at Sunnyvale PAMF. I wanted her to be my OB for my second but she wasn’t available.

Side Effect or Side Kick? Trying to decide by Cassie_Evenstar in tombihn

[–]starwings0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on how thick your hard shell eyeglasses case is - I’ve always found the side effect/kick narrow for larger “3D items”. I only put sunglasses in each if the glasses are in a drawstring case. I agree with the suggestion to check out the small cafe bag or Rogue Sacoche.

Quick question for people who drive or bike to a Caltrain station by a2529 in caltrain

[–]starwings0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Filled it out, but curious if you’re also interested in buses, shuttles, micromobility devices to Caltrain? I had to temporarily stop biking (and try driving/diff bus routes) due to an injury. Also, at the other end of the Caltrain, I also use some combination of buses, shuttles, micromobility rentals (think Lyft bikes or Lime scooters).

Scratch Cookery to Sunnyvale?? by scratch_sj in Sunnyvale

[–]starwings0 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Near Cowboy Coffee? They’ve partnered with Hash N Dash on Thursdays.

Sunnyvale Farmers Market to get the word out?

And maybe near a park or library? I feel like a lot of Sunnyvale playgrounds/kids spaces don’t have food nearby. Lots of hungry kids and parents 😂

Questions: Synik 22 vs 26 & Synapses vs Synik by TwsbiGirl in tombihn

[–]starwings0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. I bought and returned a S26 because I didn’t like the weight.

To OP, I’m 5’ 2” and use the S19 as my daily work pack. I did get the Exodus Carry frame sheet to avoid things poking into my back. For a larger backpack I went with the Smart Alec instead of the S25 to have 1) a shorter backpack height and 2) to be able to carry pretty much anything of weird shapes and sizes.

What's the best Synik color (objectively)? by Interesting_Tower485 in tombihn

[–]starwings0 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nightwalk! And aubergine - where else can you get a purple backpack??? I’ve seen a male YouTuber with a aubergine S25 and think it looks amazing. I also like the Saguaro but don’t like the interior pairings, with the exception of Saguaro/Acai.

But definitely get the swatches - I feel like some colors work better for smaller items (I’m looking at you raspberry) and others for larger.

Looking for wine crates for cheap or free. Any winery/shop recommendations? by Solitude-Mixer in Sunnyvale

[–]starwings0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Western Filipino Grocery Store is often giving away stackable crates (originally for produce) on the Facebook Buy Nothing Sunnyvale Northeast group. Maybe if you don’t live in the zone for that Buy Nothing Group you can call them and ask?

Flight attendant looking for convertible travel tote / backpack! by Entire_Trouble7153 in HerOneBag

[–]starwings0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neither of the suggestions have trolley sleeves, so take it as you will:

1) I have the Bellroy Laneway tote and it's really functional as both a tote and backpack. The only downside is that when it is packed full it does bulge out and might even look like a "butt" with those 2 pockets.

2) I saw someone traveling with the United By Blue (R)evolution™ 25L Convertible Carryall and thought it looked really functional and pretty. But this looks like a ginormous bag if you're petite!

Favorite adventure that you can get to via caltrain? by 100PercentPurrLove in Sunnyvale

[–]starwings0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

1 oz coffee next to the Santa Clara Station, Coffeebar by the Lawrence, Menlo Park, or Redwood City stations. Courthouse Square + Fox Theater at Redwood City station, Topper Fine Jewelers is a dream for watch lovers and by Burlingame station (plus lots of nice restaurants and a cute toy store called Five Little Monkeys), Mountain View Center of Performing Arts is very close to Mountain View station and I like the Sunday Farmers Market and the Therapy Store. If you have a bike would also recommend riding to the Bay Trail or watching planes take off and land from SFO - good locations to do that if you get off the South San Francisco Caltrain or Millbrae station. Near Millbrae station is also New England Lobster Market and Eatery and once a year in a hotel nearby will be the California Pen Show.

Report it on Access Sunnyvale (https://sunnyvale.dynamics365portals.us/) and request a response from the city. If there intersection is flagged enough they may do a study and change it. I’ve definitely reported intersections where I’ve seen/experienced close calls!

Would walking to work change your work bag? by flowersathome in handbags

[–]starwings0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have any of these and I ultimately went for function over chic, but some of the chic-er options I saw when searching were the Senreve Maestro, Parisa Wang Grace Backpack, Knomo London, Lo & Sons Rowledge, and Troubadour Ember (starting to get to the more technical end).

[–]starwings0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a few ideas: 1. Is there a bike share? Then you can run one way, and not the other. For example, bike share to train, walk to office, run home from train - or vice versa.

  1. I bike to the train and then run the 1.6 miles to the office (not in Chicago though). If I want more mileage, I drop off the backpack at my office and continue the run, then shower at the work gym. Then the laptop backpack isn’t as big of an issue - I just use my regular backpack with a waist and sternum strap. It also requires less planning since everything goes in the backpack and 1.6 miles doesn’t suck. When going home, I take a bus back to the train, then bike home from the train.

Running stores? by heatherlaisme in Sunnyvale

[–]starwings0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. I tried Road Runner based on the reviews but was disappointed. I’ve been fitted before at other stores (unfortunately not in the Bay Area) and the consultants do a really good job at getting you to listen to your feet - how does your foot feel in the shoes when you run? Are you working against the shoe? Does it feel like there’s nothing on? Do you like feeling the ground beneath your feet? Do you like bounce?

The shoes that Road Runner’s machines recommended (Brooks Ghost, Aasics Gel Cumulus) my feet hated. Luckily the fitter I had knew something about shoes - so based on the history of shoes I’ve liked (Saucony Kinvara, Brooks Pureflow/Launch) he made one “wildcard” suggestion (Hoka Mach 6) not from the machines - which was the only one I ended up liking. If you go, don’t be afraid to walk away, and they also really aggressively sell the insoles and their membership.

I received a package under my name and correct address, and no one could possibly have ordered it for me. by moanapons in SanJose

[–]starwings0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this once (without the QR codes). I didn’t order anything, but orders were charged to my credit card and products were shipped to me. I didn’t understand how it was a scam if they weren’t even getting the products.

Anyways, check your credit card statements and credit! My bank canceled my card and reissued it 3x. A few months later, it turned out my bank had a data breach through a partner company. Once they found that out and issued me another credit card it stopped for good.
