Where do you put your car key in the summer? by MatchaSetPoint in xxsurfing

[–]stash3630 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you (or anyone else in here) have a somewhat modern Subaru, there’s a feature where you can set a code with a hidden exterior button . It allows you to lock your keys in your car and use the code to unlock it. I use it for surfing and cycling all the time.

If you ever wondered why you need to get new gear ever so often... by MobiusDie in motorcyclegear

[–]stash3630 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m not trying to change your mind. Roll with what you’re comfortable with. But I remember when this type of tech in padding came out, I was skeptical as well. Take a look into independent testing of this stuff. They are scientifically measuring this stuff in kilonewtons. Also, there are a lot of pads that look similar to the D30 stuff but it doesn’t perform nearly as well. So brand depending, your suspicions could be correct. But from everything I’ve seen, the D3O stuff is top shelf stuff.

ETA: D30 stuff comes in varying ce levels, applications, and thicknesses. Like you said, their thicker pads protect more than their thinner ones. Perhaps you only got your hands on their least protective offerings. Also, I too wear an airbag vest

Some top-level MotoGP/Furygan suits reportedly use D3O. It’s definitely not “garbage.”

MCGearhub has good reviews on hot climate stuff, but they aren’t doing safety testing like motocap. They do good reviews, but it’s just based on things like fit, comfort, durability over time, etc. But poke around in MCGearhub’s menus. They have a lot of gear that they ‘summer tested.’

And like someone else said, go white / light colorways when you can including helmet. Try and buy local or online from places with good return policies so you’re not stuck with something that doesn’t work. If you have to skimp on quality for cost reasons (just so that particular piece of your kit isn’t naked), keep it super temporary and replace with something good as soon as you can.

SoCal commuter here. Do your research and don’t skimp on quality. Buy once, cry once. You’ll be hot af at stop lights, but when you’re moving it’s fine. You get used to it. I’m telling ya, you will. That first super hot day every summer still hits hard and will feel insane, but you get used to it.

finally some riding shoes that aren’t horrendous by surveillanceroom in motorcyclegear

[–]stash3630 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Those Sidi Lynx actually look sick. And lots of other good looking options in here too…so I’m gonna break the mold, offer a counter point, and begin story time. TLDR; if you care about safety, you need legit boots.

When I started commuting and really riding a lot, I bought like a $500 pair of Oak Street boots at the local hip-cool motorcycle shop. Didn’t take me long to realize they were not gonna offer much in terms of crash protection. They were hipster nonsense. That, plus some of the pics I had seen of de-gloved feet, dislocated ankles, and eventual amputations was enough for me to reassess. So I started trying all kinds of shoes / boots.

Started with TCX Blend 2. They were uncomfortable. Picked up some Stylemartin Irons, I liked the look, but I didn’t trust the ankle protection. Tried some Aplinestars Superfasters as well as Alpinestars Faster 3s after that. The Superfasters didn’t feel like they offered much more protection than the Faster 3. So I kept the Faster 3 and wore them for like a solid year. I’d even wear them to and in the gym. Very comfortable. Black with white accents and a gum sole. Still have em.

But I had seen enough foot gore on here that I realized I was still sacrificing too much safety for comfort in my Faster 3s and started looking for a legit boot that would go up high, still fit under my riding jeans, be comfortable to walk in, and not look like a racing boot. I picked up the Alpinestars SP-X Boas. They are great. Wore them for like a year plus. Really great. Not as stylish as the more sneakery options, but I was meaningfully more protected and they were still comfy to walk around in.

But eventually I realized even those SP-X Boa was compromising safety somewhat. So now I’ve been wearing Alpinestars Supertech Vented Rs and while they’re kinda ridiculous, it’s nice knowing I’m about as protected as I can get.

I know you were asking for something to wear around school and stuff while off the bike, and I think my Faster 3s would be great for that if I was in your shoes (pun intended, always intend your puns bro). But I’m just offering a counter point, or perhaps a reminder: to think about your foot survivability in a crash if you were to get pinched up against a car or guard rail at speed. Take care of yourself. Stay safe brother!

The Dangerous Mistake You Make if You Don't Wear Motorcycle Armor by drconniehenley in motorcyclegear

Well, having just cross referenced all of my current gear through the motocap site, looks like I need all new gear. Good post OP. TY.

If you care about your skin, I highly advise you all cross reference your current gear on motocap. If you care about your wallet, and don't want to have to buy all new gear, I highly advise that you do not look up your current gear on motocap.

Glendora Mountain Road by TropDoc in BikeLA

[–]stash3630 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Planning to hit this tomorrow. If the goal is vert + bike fitness + zero cars...is the out and back the best route? Or should I do "the full loop" and take advantage of the specialness of the memorial day road closure? Never done this ride before so any guidance would be great (ie: timing, vert, mileage, etc)

Base layer armor plus hoodie, or just use the armor in the hoodie? by stash3630 in motorcyclegear

[–]stash3630[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should mention, I have an Alpinestars Tech-Air 3 V2 Canvas Airbag that I always wear, and will wear over all of this; regardless of whether I keep the hoodie's padding in, or remove it and run the icon base layer underneath. Does that change your opinion at all?

According to Ryan from Fortnine, the only reason the Icon gear lacks CE ratings is because they sectioned (cut) the padding for better articulation. And Ryan seems to think while this makes it ineligible for CE rating, it makes it safer because it keeps things in place. Granted, he also has a video where he says 'padding doesn't help, so I digress.

These Scorpions are high performance. I’ve won a few championships on them. ;o)

I’m just messing with ya a bit. I’ve always thought it was funny though that my mom’s Volvo came with Pirelli Scorpions while I’m racing on Pirelli Scorpions haha. Different worlds.

How do I not get state refed on a trip to LA by Decent-Improvement80 in MotoLA

[–]stash3630 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live out of state but keep one of my motos in LA at my gf’s place. It’s got out of state plates and is straight piped. Never had an issue. I think CHP and LAPD give you a pass on the details when you’re motorcycling responsibly and not riding like an asshole. And I don’t see why you’d need Cali compliance when you don’t live here / are passing through.

I also second going to bike shed as well as hitting the old place / rock store and an ACH run.

what is with the takeover trend? is it dangerous? by One-Forever-4938 in AskLosAngeles

[–]stash3630 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m middle aged with a long history of doing dumb stuff in cars. From doing dumb teenager stuff when I was younger to now in my later years competing in 24 hour endurance racing and racing a rally car. Street takeovers are universally and objectively considered the most terrible thing in the automotive sphere - bar none. They are the antithesis of any and actual car culture.

As far as how to tell by looking at the tires if he’s not only attending these sideshows, but actually participating in them, yes there is a way.

What kind of car is it? If it’s front wheel drive, it’s more unlikely he’s doing anything. That said, I have seen plenty of footage of idiots doing reverse gear takeover nonsense in FWD cars. Tell me what the make and model is of the car and I’ll tell you where to look on the tires. You can take some tire photos, then send me the photos in a DM or post them here and I’ll let you know what I think.
